Entry to firing range restricted
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, August 4
Following two incidents of misfiring during firing practice at the firing range in Sector 25 in the recent past, the Chandigarh Police has decided to allow entry to the firing range strictly on the basis of valid permits. The responsibility of guarding the entire premises of the firing range has been taken over by the city police.

A senior official in the police, said a set of rules were being framed that would govern various parameters related to the firing practice at the range. Due to increase in population around the range, the long-range shooting was being conducted at the firing range of Western Command in Chandi Mandir. Presently, only short-range firing practice is being allowed here.

The main problem is related to the maintenance of the firing range. Wild growth which has virtually taken over the entire range, is being removed by the police department. The police officials have taken up the matter of providing other basic amenities at the range with the Chandigarh Administration.

Currently, there are three enclosed firing ranges — 30 metres, 50 metres and 100 metres. The mud on the target wall has been applied freshly, said the official.

As per the Punjab Police Rules, at least 70 per cent of the force has to undergo firing practice.
