Solve mystery of missing man: DMCH faculty

The faculty of Dayanand Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) has demanded that a complaint should be lodged with the court, which should direct the authorities to produce the body of the electrician, who had died allegedly due to police firing during the scuffle on July 13, otherwise the whereabouts of the body as well as the events on that day should be investigated by an independent agency.

Crying foul over the arrest of Mr Jasdev Singh Sekhon, a building inspector and a sewadar, Mr Sarbjit Singh Grewal, by the Vigilance Bureau of police from Zone C office of the Municipal Corporation at Gill Road here today, the civic employees have served a notice for a day’s strike on Monday which might be extended indefinitely if the high-handedness of vigilance police continued in this manner.

Tangri set to surface again
Ludhiana, July 19
The state unit of the Shiv Sena (Bal Thackery) today asserted that the raids on the local Gur Mandi were “politically motivated” to frame Shiv Sena (Rashtravadi) chief Jagdish Tangri and his son Sunil Tangri and that the stage is set for the “homecoming” of someone who “contributed a lot to the cause of Hindus during the dark era of militancy in Punjab.”

ICAR awards for PAU scientists
Ludhiana, July 19
Two doctorate students of Punjab Agricultural University have won the Jawaharlal Nehru Award for outstanding postgraduate agricultural research for the year 2001. The awards are instituted by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) and were conferred by Mr Ajit Singh, Union Agriculture Minister, on July 16 at Vigyan Bhavan in New Delhi.

Railways penalised for deficient services

The District Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum has directed the Railways to pay Rs 4,000 on account of compensation for deficiency in services to Mr Satya Paul Kalra, a resident of Chowk Khawaja Azam. 

Show-cause notice issued to SSP, DSP
Machhiwara, July 19
Justice M.M. Kumar of the Punjab and Haryana High Court has issued a show-cause notice to former SSP of Khanna police district Devinder Singh Garcha, DSP, Samrala, Gurtejinder Singh Aulakh, SHO, Machhiwara Dilbagh Singh and ASI Nachhatar Singh to be present on September 19 in the High Court on the charge of contempt of court.

Summer season zonal tourney
Ludhiana, July 19
The Ludhiana District Schools Tournament Committee has decided to organise the Summer Season Zonal Tournament for senior, high and middle schools from August 5 to 10. Players under-19, under-17 and under-14 age groups will take part in this tournament, according to Mr Bachhitar Singh, District Education Officer (secondary).
