A strange scene can be witnessed in villages situated near the Sidhwan canal or Rajasthan feeder in this district at night these days. Groups of youths armed with guns, lathis and even swords can be seen undertaking patrolling of the canal or drains originating from the canal.

Bar on entry to club pool
Ludhiana, June 17
Allaying the fears of members of the Satluj Club that taking a dip in its swimming pool meant catching various infections, the Deputy Commissioner and the president of the club, Mr Anurag Aggarwal, today said he had banned the entry of the non-members to the swimming pool of the club and ordered the replacement of the water of the pool everyday in wake of the complaints received by him from the people who had developed various infections after swimming in the pool.

Two oil mill employees die of burns
Ahmedgarh, June 17
Two persons died due to burns while working in an oil mill near here. According to information, Pritam Singh of Dhada Heri village and Darshan Singh of Akbarpur Chhanna village succumbed to their injuries early this morning. 

One trapped as well  caves in
Doraha, June 17
Two persons of Sekhan village, near Maloud under Payal police station, were trapped when a well caved in on Saturday evening. One person is still unaccounted for even after 48 hours of struggle by the authorities concerned and the administration.

Scooterist killed in mishap
Jagraon, June 17
Jagdip Singh alias Deepa (19), a resident of Malak village, was killed when the scooter (PB 28 1802) on which he was going was hit by a vehicle near Dholan Gate. The local police has registered a case under Sections 304A, 427 and 279, IPC.

Police inaction alleged
Khanna, June 17
The relatives of Mr Harnacinder Singh Minhas, who was murdered on May 3 near Chhota Khanna, has alleged that the police is trying to hush up the case. Mr Kirpal Singh , brother-in-law of the deceased, who has come to India from Canada to pursue the case of Mr Minhas said that even after one and a half months of the incident, the police is clueless.

PAU don elected vice-president
Ludhiana, June 17
Dr Kuldip Singh Sandhu, Senior Plant Pathologist, PAU, has been elected vice-president of the Indian Society of Plant Pathologists for the year 2002.
Besides Dr Sandhu, three other PAU scientists have also been elected office-bearers of the society.

Fancy dress  competition
Ludhiana, June 17
The Gayatri Ladies Club organised a fancy dress competition for children here today. The children were dressed as brides, beggars, spiderman, and vegetable sellers. Ms Bindu Aggarwal, secretary of the club, said the club was planning to organise a programme for the children. “We thought that this is the most suitable time as they have been enjoying their holidays”, she said.

Dept of Posts penalised
Ludhiana, June 17
The District Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum has directed the Department of Posts to pay Rs 700 as compensation on account of deficiency in services to Ms Jaswinder Pal Kaur, a resident of Kartar Nagar, Model Gram.

LDCA XI, Riat Club reach semifinals
Ludhiana, June 17
Riat Club demolished NOC Academy by 81 runs, while LDCA XI in a nail biting finish outplayed Double Decker Club by 4 runs to make it to the semifinals of the 7th Invitation Cricket Cup Tournament being organised by the College of Agriculture at the Punjab Agricultural University ground here on Sunday. 

Players’ death mourned
Ludhiana, June 17
Former hockey olympians, sports promoters and representatives of different sports organisations have expressed grief over the death of former hockey stars, Kuldeep Singh and Narinder Singh Laddi who died last week.

ADMINISTRATION

20 vehicles challaned
Ludhiana, June 17
Launching a crackdown on three-wheelers causing pollution in the city, the district administration and the District Transport Officer challaned vehicles this evening today. Within an hour of the drive as many as 20 vehicles emitting poisonous gases above 65 HSU were challaned.

ASI sent to Police Lines
Ludhiana, June 17
The Deputy Commissioner, Mr Anurag Aggarwal, today ordered the transfer of a Punjab Police ASI to the Police Lines and directed the Police Department not to post him at any position without his approval.
