Public Sports Club win powerlifting titles

Chandigarh, June 17
The Public Sports Club of SAS Nagar won the Chandigarh powerlifting senior’s title for the third time and the sub-junior’s title for the 18th time in a row by securing 92 points in the meet in the gymnasium hall on the PU campus here today.

Mr V.K. Bhalla (PCS) president, Chandigarh Powerlifting Association, gave away the prizes.

In the 52 kg senior class, Manpreet Singh created two new records in deadlift (175 kg) and total weight (412.5kg). In the 75 kg senior class, Romesh Kumar of Chandigarh improved his own two records in deadlift from 270 kg to 272.5 kg and in total weight from 645 kg to 657 kg.

Other winners: below-52 kg — Manpreet Singh; 56 kg — Navjot Singh; 60 kg —Sandeep; 67.5 kg — Iqbal Singh; 75 kg — Romesh Kumar; 82.5 kg — Hussan Lal; 90 kg — Palwinder Singh; 100 kg — Amit Sharma; 110 kg — Jaspreet Singh.

Boxing

The Chandigarh Amateur Boxing Association has announced teams for the Northern India Senior Men and Women Boxing Championship to be held at Kanpur from June 20 to 23.

The team are: boys — Mukesh Kumar, Jaspal, Sandeep, Sohan Rawat, Vijender Singh, Sardool Singh, Joginder Singh, Ajay Singh (captain), Gurwinder Singh, Ajit Pal, Akhil Kapoor and Simranjit Singh. Women — Shalini, Manika, Ginni Seth, Kulwinder, Sangeeta (captain), Rajni, Sanyogita and Ruchi.

The officials who will accompany the team include, Harsh Kumar, Anand Kumar, Jagdeep Singh, Ms Vijaylakshmi and Virender Dangi. Ring officials will be Dr C.K. Jerath, B.S. Virk and Sonia Kanwar.

Netball teams

Opinder Sharma among boys and Pushpa among girls will lead the Chandigarh junior netball teams for the 19th National Junior Netball (Under-19) Championships to be held at Sunder Nagar (HP) from June 19 to 23. According to Mr R. Sharan, secretary, Netball Association of Chandigarh, 10 girls and an equal number of boys have been selected, along with two reserves in both sections, after a fortnight-long coaching camp held at the grounds of Government Senior Secondary School, Sector 27.

The teams are: girls — Pushpa (captain), Navneet, Aman, Monika, Varsha, Poonam, Purnima, Kanchan, Anita and Harneet. reserve: Rekha and Amrit Pal Kaur.

Boys — Opinder Sharma (captain), Vikram Rana, Mandip Singh Walia, Sandeep Rana, Amit Kumar, Sukhpal Singh, Munish, Sandeep Gehlot, Shailesh Lamba, Rajdeep. Reserve: Rakesh and Sunny Sharma.

Raman Sharma and Shalley will accompany the team as coach and manager, respectively.

37 officials found absent from work

Panchkula, June 17
As many as 37 government officials posted in various departments here were found absent from work this morning. A surprise check was conducted by the Additional Deputy Commissioner, the Subdivisional Magistrate and the District Transport Officer in various offices from 9.15 am to 9.45 am.

With vacation time around, the Deputy Commissioner, Ms Jyoti Arora, today decided to check if the officials were reaching offices on time. Raids were conducted simultaneously on the HUDA office by the ADC, Mr S.K. Goyal, the Mansa Devi Shrine Board office by the DTO, Mr Jagtar Singh, and the District Industry Centre, District Food and Civil Supplies office and the District Employment office by the SDM, Mr M.S. Yadav.

It is learnt that while two employees in the Mansa Devi Shrine Board office were found absent from duty, as many as 20 employees were found absent in various branches of HUDA in Sector 6. Eight employees of the Chief Town Planner’s office, six each of the Estate Office and the planning branch were found absent.

Four employees of the District Industry Centre, including the Block Level Expansion Officer; five in the District Food and Civil Supplies office and six in the employment office were found absent.

It is also learnt that most officials of the Excise Department, including three Excise and Taxation Officers, and four Assistant Excise and Taxation Officers were found absent.
