Srinagar, June 12
Dispelling the police claim that the infiltration of militants has come down the Border Security Force (BSF) here claims that it is still on with about 90 militants having sneaked into India during the recent past.

This information, according to Mr R.S. Bhuller, DIG, BSF, is based on intercepted messages and is yet to be confirmed. He claimed that 10 militants of the Hizbul Mujahideen crossed over to this side of the Line of Control (LoC) on the intervening night of June 6 and 7 in Machchil sector of Kupwara district in north Kashmir. He said there were five intercepted messages giving full details of the level of infiltration of the armed militants along the LoC in Kashmir.

Talking to mediapersons here this morning, the DIG said there were reports of the presence of two groups of Al-Qaida militants in parts of north Kashmir. One such group was reportedly in the Bandipore area of Baramulla district, while the other was operating in the Beerwah area of Budgam district. He added that the Al-Qaida group reportedly in the Beerwah area was earlier based in the peripheral areas of adjacent Pulwama district.

Mr Bhuller held that militants in the valley were lying low in view of the international pressure on the Government of Pakistan and instructions to them from their mentors across the border. He claimed that violence was expected to escalate by the end of this month ahead of the Assembly elections scheduled to be held by September-October this year.

He pointed out that militant groups had informed the public through posters in Anantnag district to conclude all social functions by June 26, prior to the escalation in violence.

Holding the Lashkar-e-Toiba militant outfit responsible for the assassination of senior Hurriyat Conference leader, Abdul Ghani Lone, the DIG said no other major incident had taken place in the recent past. He added that the APHC leader had shown signs of change from a hardliner to moderate approach in his thinking. The Lashkar-e-Toiba had earlier, however, denied the charges that it was involved in the killing of the Hurriyat Conference leader.

Mr Bhuller said 2,250 militants were active in Kashmir valley at present, adding that the Hizbul Mujahideen was the major group with more than 900 cadres followed by 525 militants of Lashkar-e-Toiba, operating in the valley. Majority of the Lashkar-e-Toiba cadres were foreigners, he said, while the Hizbul Mujahideen was the only group having majority of its cadres from the valley.

He said the Hizbul Mujahideen had the infrastructure, manpower and the capability to strike at any time as compared to other militant groups operating in the valley.

The BSF officer claimed that other groups were not able to strike on such a scale. He added that all militant outfits were pro-Pakistan with only 8 per cent of the populace having pro-Pakistan leaning.

Pakistan continues to train ultras: Farooq

Srinagar, June 12
Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah said today that Pakistan’s commitment to international community against terrorism and continuation of terrorist training camps across the border cannot go together.

“Despite giving assurances to the world community, training to ultras in Pakistan camps is continuing,” Mr Abdullah said speaking at a passing-out parade about some 60 km from here.

He said: “The international community is boasting of fighting terrorism and makes big show of its resolve. If it really wants to rid the world from terror, it should ensure that sanctity of the Line of Control is not violated and infiltration stopped forthwith so that the ultras are not pushed into this side to kill innocents, dishonour women and inflict miseries to the people”.

“How long shall we believe in assurances and how long Pakistan, the mother of terrorism, will befool the world community,” the Chief Minister wondered.

“People of Jammu and Kashmir yearn for free and fair poll. But, unfortunately the enemy does not want them to exercise their democratic right freely. The international community must see that no attempt is made to subvert the democratic process,” he said, cautioning that “if Pakistan does not desist from hostility towards India, the compatriots would rise and march towards the border unmindful of the authorities in New Delhi”.

However, he said he hoped that a situation of this kind would not arise.

“Jammu and Kashmir is a proud part of India and the will and determination of the people can’t be broken, even by using atom bombs,” Mr Abdullah said.

“Pakistan has not been able to annex even an inch of the state in four wars and will meet the same fate if a war is thrust on the nation,” he said, reiterating that “India wants peace and not war”.

He said Pakistan should stop dubbing terror in Jammu and Kashmir... It is sheer terrorism, perpetrated by Pakistan. We may have differences with New Delhi, like that of in a family, which can be resolved, but Islamabad must not undermine the resolve of the people who have always rejected Pakistan”.

Mr Abdullah praised the role of police in the state and said “the police has emerged a force to be reckoned with”. PTI

He said that sanitisation of the whole yatra axis would be started shortly.
