PUNJAB

BATHINDA
PSEB CONTROL ROOM: The PSEB has set up a control room in this region to provide 24-hour power supply to the consumers during the paddy sowing season. According to the Executive Engineer of Bathinda consumers can lodge their complaints and get information's regarding the power supply from this control room. The phone number of this control room is 271063.

OFFICE-BEARERS: The following have been elected office-bearers of the block committee of the BKU (Ekta): president — Mr Babu Singh; senior vice-president — Mr Balbir Singh; vice-president — Mr Sadhu Singh; general secretary — Mr Harbhagwan Singh and treasurer — Mr Sukhmandar Singh.

HOSHIARPUR
BAN IMPOSED: Mr Kirandeep Singh Bhullar, District Magistrate, has reimposed Section 144 of the Cr PC throughout the district banning the assembly of five or more persons, taking out processions, shouting of slogans and carrying firearms in the public places. The orders will not be applicable on the police, Home Guards personnel and other government employees on duty. The orders will remain in force up to July 31.

DRY DAYS: Keeping in view the zila parishad and panchayat samiti poll, Mr Kirandeep Singh Bhullar, District Magistrate, has ordered closure of all liquor vends in the rural areas of the district on June 9 and 10.

KAPURTHALA
LIQUOR VENDS CLOSED: The District Magistrate, Mr Rakesh Kumar, on Friday ordered the closure of liquor vends in the district on June 9 and 10 due to block samiti and zila parishad elections. The sale of liquor in shops, clubs, hotels and restaurants has also been banned on these days.

LUDHIANA
LECTURE: Dr Narotam Diwan, a surgeon and former faculty member of Dayanand Medical College and Christian Medical College, delivered a lecture on general health and surgical problems at a monthly meeting of the Punjab Kisan Club, PAU, on Friday. He stressed the need for getting timely medical check-up. He said stones in kidney and gall bladder could easily be removed through laproscopy or rays without any cut. He emphasised the need for regular exercise and intake of balanced and healthy diet. Dr Diwan conducted free medical check-up of farmers and women.

TRAINING COURSES: Two training courses on “Farm water management” and “Processing of agricultural products” concluded in the College of Agricultural Engineering, PAU, here on Saturday. Presiding over joint sessions of the courses, Dr Jaspinder Singh Kolar, Director of Extension Education, said the underground water level was dropping at an alarming rate. He stressed the need for starting small agro-industrial projects for value addition to farm produce. Dr H.S. Sekhon, Dean, College of Agricultural Engineering, distributed certificates among the participants. Dr Mangal Singh, in charge, training unit of agricultural engineering, said 18 soil conservation officers and 17 agricultural development officers of the Punjab Government attended the training programmes.

MOCK TEST: Abishek, a student from the Punjab College of Technical Education, has topped a free mock CAT test organised by Bulls’ Eye, a coaching centre. He would now be provided free coaching at the centre in a batch starting from June 25, said Mr Sukhwinder Singh, centre head. Besides this, top 27 students would be given scholarships worth Rs 1 lakh.

SEMINAR: A seminar on career counselling and goal setting was organised by the Ways and Means Learning System at Alpha Tutorials. Mr Ramman Nayyar, Mr Sarabjit Singh Kwatra and Mr Dinesh Kapila were the resource persons. Mr Jasminderjeet Singh, centre head, said that over 100 students from various schools and colleges of the city and adjoining places participated in the workshop.

SCOOTER TRADERS’ BODY: The Ludhiana Scooter Traders Association has announced that all shops under the association located on Link Road will remain closed for four days from June 19 on account of special summer holidays. The market will reopen on June 23, according to the general secretary, Mr Janak Raj Arora. 

MALERKOTLA
ELECTROCUTED: Malkeet Singh (25) of Shergarh Cheema village was electrocuted on Thursday. He was working in the fields and while operating the tubewell, he received an electric shock and he died on the spot.

THREE HELD: Surjit Singh, Sapinder Singh and Balwinder Singh were arrested from near Maloud village on Thursday. The police has seized 32 bottles of illicit liquor from their possession. A case under the Excise Act has been registered.

MANDI GOBINDGARH
MEDICAL CAMP: As many as 210 patients were examined by Dr R.K. Gupta and Dr Rita Singh during a free medical check-up camp organised by Desh Bhagat Ayurvedic Hospital at Tooran village, on Amloh-Gobindgarh Road, here on Friday. According to a press note issued here on Saturday by Dr. S.N. Singh, Principal of the college, such camps will be organised every Wednesday in different villages of the area. Free medicines were also provided to the patients.

MANSA
SON ‘MISSING’: Ms Nirmaljit Kaur of Mansa has written to the Punjab Human Rights Commission and Chief Minister of Punjab that her 20-year-old-son Rajinder Singh, alias Raju, was arrested by the city police on April 20. She further stated that her son had not been produced in any court so far and the police authorities were not disclosing his whereabouts. She requested the authorities to trace her son.

MOGA
RESENTMENT: Resentment prevails among families of labourers from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar who lost their lives while digging wells in the district during the past six months. A group of labourers on Saturday told reporters that neither the owners of wells nor the government had given any compensation to the families those killed in accidents on site.

BAN SOUGHT: Several organisations, including the Arya Samaj Sanatan Dharam Sabha, on Friday demanded a ban on smoking, beauty contests, fashion shows and gambling in the state. A former president of the Punjab unit of the Bharatiya Kisan Union, Mr Kuldip Singh Sandhu, and the general secretary of the Punjab unit of the Bharat Kisan Union, Mr Satnam Singh Sandeshi, and former State Minister for Health Malti Thaper said these vices were ruining the youth.

PM REPLIES: A school child, Rakesh Kumar, recently sent a letter to the Prime Minister. Since he did not knew the address, he simply pasted a photograph of the Prime Minister on the envelope and wrote New Delhi. Hats off to the Postal Department which delivered the letter. Rakesh has received a reply from the Prime Minister Office.

NAWANSHAHR
COMPETITION: Nievat Public School organised an essay writing competition on environment here on Wednesday. A seminar to create awareness on the importance of keeping the environment green and clean was also organised on the “World Environment Day”, said Ms Navita Joshi, Principal, in a press note issued on Friday.

PHAGWARA
MONEY STOLEN: A bag containing Rs 45,000 belonging to NRI Tarsem Singh of Chiheru village was stolen from the toolbox of his scooter on Friday. He had withdrawn the money from a bank. He had lodged a complaint with the police.

TARN TARAN
DHARNA HELD: Members of the PSEB Employees Struggle Committee staged a dharna in front of the office of the local circle office of the board on Friday. Employee leaders addressing the workers asked the board management not to privatise the board and retrench employees.

MAN MURDERED: Satbir Singh (32) of nearby Palasour village was found murdered at his farmhouse on Thursday. The police has registered a case. He was reportedly hit with an iron rod.

PUNJABI CONFERENCE: Punjabi folk singer and dancer Pammi Bai has recently come back after attending the World Punjabi Conference held from May 17 to 19 in London. He was the only person to have joined the conference from India. He addressed a press conference in the Punjab Kala Bhavan here on Saturday. He said his next album would be released in the next year. Mr Ranbir Singh, in charge (Punjab region), HMV Music company, also addressed the conference.

YAMUNANAGAR
CAUGHT: A revenue accountant in the Audit Department of the HVPN was caught red handed by the Vigilance Department for taking a bribe. Parkash Chand Gupta posted at Mustafabad in the district on a complaint of Yashpal, a consumer from Mustafabad, was arrested on Thursday and sent to judicial lock-up. He had demanded Rs 2,500 from the complainant to rectify the bill.

CRUSHERS LOOTED: Five youths brandishing pistols and lethal weapons allegedly went to the Walia Stone crusher around 2 am and looted Rs 200 from a labourer posted there, according to the report received here on Friday. Then they went to Kaveri Stone crusher and looted Rs 8,000. Khizrabad police station has registered cases.
