Awareness programme on heart ailments
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, May 27
The Annie Heart and Medical Centre in Sector 15 here has evolved an awareness programme for heart patients — “Dil Ke Maamle Men, Dimaag Se Len Kaam” — under which heart patients along with people in general would be made aware of the symptoms of heart disease along with the prevention aspects.

Dr Deepak Kaura, consultant cardiologist at the centre, said here today that in view of the growing heart problems, the centre had considered it its duty to make people aware of the causes and prevention of heart diseases. It was in this context that the programme had been launched. This would be a continued medical education programme and would run through seminars and various other presentations. An interactive website would also be added at a later stage, and a public contact programme would be launched in rural areas and city slums.

Dr Kaura said that medical treatment was very expensive today, and getting out of reach of the common people. Even medical insurance was helpful only to a certain limit. Treatment of heart diseases was even more expensive. In such a scenario, the centre has begun a planned campaign to provide affordable medical facilities to people. Yesterday, a free heart treatment camp was organised at the centre under the supervision of Dr Suman Bhandari and his team from Escorts Hospital, New Delhi. The patients at the camp had only to pay for the medical consumables. No hospital or doctor fee was charged.

Despite being a privately run hospital, profit was not the sole objective, claimed Dr Kaura. Earlier, the centre had provided free treatment to Mr Bal Krishan, a kulfi-seller from Sector 20, Chandigarh, when he suffered a massive cardiac arrest. “When we came to know that Mr Bal Krishan had no money for necessary tests, what to talk of treatment, we decided to provide the facility of tests and treatment to him for free. Even the stent was got donated free of cost, which would have cost him around Rs 50,000 in a normal situation. Mr Bal Krishan is recuperating now and heading towards a healthy life again, he said.
