Curfew in Gujarat town, 300 held

Ahmedabad, May 14
An indefinite curfew was imposed in Vadtal town of Kheda district today as a preventive measure after the police foiled a clash between sub-sects of a particular faith and arrested about 300 persons.

The police said curfew was imposed at 9 am after followers of one sub-sect forcibly entered the temple, the administration of which had come under control of the rival sub-sect in the recently held elections.

As soon as followers of the sub-sect entered the temple and started chanting devotional songs at 7 am, followers of the other sub-sect also reached there in large numbers.

Timely police intervention prevented the situation from deteriorating.

In view of the heightened tension in the town, the authorities imposed curfew as a precautionary measure.

Earlier, at least five persons were injured in incidents of stone-throwing and a crude bomb blast in four riot-affected areas last night.

Panic gripped Kalupur and adjoining areas of Raikhad, Dani Limda and Shahpur after a crude bomb exploded, the police said. UNI, PTI

Chinks in BJP-BSP alliance
Our Correspondent

Lucknow, May 14
Chinks have appeared in the 15-day old BJP-BSP alliance. A former Chief Minister and leader of the BJP Legislature Party, Mr Rajnath Singh, did not attend the all-party meeting called by the Chief Minister, Ms Mayawati, here yesterday evening. Not only this, he is not even in talking terms with the CM.

The all-party meeting was called on the eve of the commencement of state Assembly session. All the political parties boycotted the meeting. Though BJP senior leaders, including the state President of the party, Mr Kalraj Mishra, and the Urban Development Minister, Mr Lalji Tandon, attended the meeting, yet it was the absence of Mr Rajnath Singh that raised eyebrows.

A close lieutenant of Mr Rajnath Singh told TNS today that he (Mr Rajnath) was not in speaking terms with the CM. What would he have done at the meeting? Moreover, the party was represented by Mr Mishra and Mr Tandon. Therefore, Ms Mayawati should not have any complaints, he said.

Sources in the BJP vouch that Mr Rajnath Singh had always opposed any alliance between the BJP and the BSP. He even advocated the possible fallout of this alliance to national leaders. However, he was forced to reconcile after the BJP leadership went ahead with the alliance.

Some even point out that Mr Rajnath Singh orchestrated the so-called revolt by the legislator of Bhinga, Raja Chandramani Singh against the BJP leadership. Raja Bhinga, a Thakur, is said to be a protege of the former Chief Minister.

The Raja had threatened to vote against the Mayawati-led BJP-BSP government if he was not given a place in the ministry.

Meanwhile, the BJP has issued a whip asking party MLAs in Uttar Pradesh to be present in the House and vote in favour of the motion of confidence on the Mayawati government on May 17, party sources said.

MLAs have dubious credentials
Biswajeet Banerjee

Lucknow, May 14
The crucial five-day session of the UP State Assembly in which Chief Minister Mayawati will prove her majority began yesterday with legislators taking the oath of office. Around 300 legislators took the oath.

The 14th State Assembly has a strange mix. It has members of all hues — from tantrik to storyteller and from criminals to businessmen. There are supporters of dacoit Dadua, who runs a reign in the Patha region, bordering Madhya Pradesh.

One Jagdish Mishra, alias Balti Baba, is the BJP legislator from Fazil Nagar. He is a proven tantrik. Then there is Dumdum ‘Maharaj’ alias Brijendra Kumar Vyas, who is a storyteller and famous for telling tales of Ramayana and Mahabharata. He has won for the first time on the BSP ticket from Garotha.

There are 42 criminals too. Vijay Kumar Mishra, SP legislator from Gyanpur, who was declared a proclaimed offender and now has police protection. BSP legislator Amarmani Tripathi was recently jailed for giving protection to criminals in his Lucknow residence.

Mafia don Mukhtar Ansari has won the election from Mau as an independent candidate. Then there is Dhananjay Singh, another known criminal, who, too, has won as an independent supported by the Lok Janshakti of Ram Vilas Paswan.

SC: repoll if elected candidate disqualified

New Delhi, May 14
In an important judgement, the Supreme Court has ruled that if more than two candidates contested a poll and the elected candidate was disqualified, fresh elections have to be held as the candidate securing second highest number of votes cannot be declared elected in his place.

“In an election where the elected candidate is declared to be disqualified to contest election and there are more than two candidates contesting election, there is no specific provision under the Representation of the People Act under which the person who has secured the next highest number of votes could be declared elected,” the court said.

The high court had declared Vijay Kumar Khandare, who had secured second place in a five-corner contest to Bhalki Assembly seat, as elected after finding that the elected candidate was disqualified to contest the elections. PTI

Is Shekhawat PM’s choice for President?
T. R. Ramachandran
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, May 14
Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee is expected to hold consultations with Congress president and Leader of the Opposition Sonia Gandhi about the next occupant of Rashtrapati Bhavan soon after the end of the Budget session of Parliament on Friday.

Though Mr Vajpayee is yet to firm up his mind on the choice of his presidential nominee, the shortlist can include BJP stalwart and former Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhairon Singh Shekhawat, Maharashtra Governor P.C. Alexander and Vice-President Krishan Kant, according to authoritative sources.

Former Prime Minister Chandra Shekhar and Nationalist Congress chief Sharad Pawar reportedly feel that Mr Shekhawat will be a proper choice for the office of the President. Mr Pawar is also not averse to the candidature of Dr Alexander. The Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), which is heading a coalition government in Uttar Pradesh, has affirmed that it will support the BJP’s choice for the office of President.

With things beginning to hot up about the next President of the country, the Vajpayee-Sonia meeting in this regard can take place either on May 17 or 18 or immediately thereafter before the Prime Minister leaves on a week-long vacation to Manali.

The BJP-led NDA has a definite edge in the electoral college in the event of a contest for the high office of the President of India. At the same time the endeavour is to evolve a consensus and avoid any bitterness of going through the motions of having an election.

Already several names are being bandied about as to who is best suited for occupying Rashtrapati Bhavan. There are yet others who firmly believe that given their multi-faceted personality and career graph, they can maintain the dignity of the office of President in preserving and protecting the Constitution.

Mr Vajpayee’s equation with the old war horse, Mr Shekhawat, is well known. Mr Shekhawat has been the Chief Minister of Rajasthan three times. In the emerging scenario, is Mr Shekhawat the dark horse or one of many on the presidential horizon with Mr Narayanan completing his term in July? That is the question doing the rounds in the corridors of power here.

Apology for Bluestar sought
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, May 14
A demand by the Akali Dal (Mann) and supported by the Congress and the CPI for an apology in the Lok Sabha for the 1984 army action in the Golden Temple today resulted in an uproar in the House with BJP members strongly opposing it saying that it was the Congress alone which was responsible for the Operation Bluestar.

As Minister of State in PMO Vijay Goel accused the Congress of being responsible for the anti-Sikh riots that followed the assassination of Indira Gandhi in 1984, Mr P.R. Dasmunsi and S. Jaipal Reddy (both Congress) shot back saying that he could not don two caps — one as an MP and another as a minister.

Raising the issue during zero hour, Mr Simranjit Singh Mann regretted that Parliament had so far failed to apologies to Sikhs for the Army operation.

He accused the Army of stealing artefacts from the Golden Temple during the operation and said no records were now available in that regard.

Supporting him, Mr Jagmeet Singh Brar (Congress) said his party leader Sonia Gandhi had gone to the Golden Temple and expressed regret to Sikhs for the Army operation.

Another Congress member Tarlochan Singh Tur wanted a regret by the House for the Operation Black Thunder carried out in the Golden Temple later. Mr Bhan Singh Bhaura (CPI) also wanted an apology for the Army action.
