Robbers get active again

Close on the heels of three robberies in this region, robbers struck again at two houses in Naya Gaon village and injured two persons, one of them seriously, before escaping with cash and jewellery in the wee hours here today.

For over one month, a poor family of Saketri village near here is being traumatised by its powerful landlords. After braving at least two armed attacks by the landlords’ henchmen, the family managed to get an FIR registered against them, but its ordeal did not end here.

Heat wave keeps residents in
Business hit; hill station bookings rise

A burning loo, scorching the body, kept the residents indoors as the city recorded the highest temperature of the season today. As the mercury touched 44° C — 0.4° C more than yesterday — the residents preferred to remain inside in front of coolers and air conditioners.

Punwire staff union welcomes Supreme Court order
SAS Nagar May 10
While welcoming the orders of the Supreme Court that the Central Buearu of Investigation (CBI) should take up investigations into the alleged embezzlement of funds by Punwire officials, the Punjab Wire less Systems Employees Union thanked the Punjab Government for stating that it had no objection if the Punwire enquiry was handed over to the central agency.

No-confidence move against Kesar Singh

Coffee drinkers at the Sector 35 outlet of Barista, here, were pleasantly surprised this afternoon to find in their midst supermodel Aparna Kumar. She had come along with Barista executive vice-president Sandeep Vyas to launch Colombia Supremo, the first in the series of a new array of single origin 100 per cent arabica coffees. A scrabble-playing duo on one table, a group enjoying the hot beverage topped with heart-shaped, leaf-shaped and bird-shaped frothy mixture in one corner all looked up as the beautiful Fair and Lovely and Rexona girl Aparna explained the salient features of the new brew to them.

Panel seeks powers to check public spending
Chandigarh, May 10
The Legal Affairs Committee of the Municipal Corporation of Chandigarh sought the powers of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC), the most powerful body in the Parliament and state Assemblies, at its first meeting here today. The committee headed by Dr K.S. Raju said the corporation needed such a body to check public spending.

Police clueless in robbery cases

Illicit liquor seized, 2 held
Chandigarh, May 10
The police has arrested two persons from the Maloya colony for bootlegging and seized 26 pouches of illicit liquor from their possession. The accused have been identified as Malkiat Singh and Satrughan Singh. Seperate cases under the Excise Act have been registered against them.

14th Nestle cook ‘n’ serve contest held

The Central Club in Sector 9 was the venue for the 14th contest in the series of 40 Nestle cook ‘n’ serve contests to be organised in all. On Wednesday there had seen 155 entries from two schools, yesterday 160 ladies participated in the contest, conceived by Ms Annop Michra of Futurama.

Panjab University has constituted a committee to study the controversial issue of the recent ban on ‘freedom of expression’. Prof K.N. Pathak, Vice-Chancellor, talking to TNS exclusively, said the circular in question had been issued in a particular context and was not a general ban on the freedom of expression.

Lawyers strike work, flay tainted HC Judges
Chandigarh, May 10
Hundreds of lawyers of District Courts observed a strike here today against the role of some Judges of the High Court in the Punjab Public Service Commission (PPSC) recruitment scam and the appointment of certain judicial officials through unfair means. The protest began early today and continued till evening.

1 remanded in judicial custody
Chandigarh, May 10
Amardeep Singh, allegedly involved in a case of cheating, was today remanded to judicial custody by a local court. The accused was arrested by the city police on May 8 as he had been declared Proclaimed offender on April 16 by the court.

A promising skater
Chandigarh, May 10
Kuljinder Singh, a Class IX student of Satluj Public School, Sector 4, Panchkula, is now grooming into a promising skater. Kuljinder secured first place in the 39th National Roller Skating Championship held at Visakhapatnam (AP) in the roller hockey championship in under-12 section, and also helped his state, Haryana, win medal in the National School Games in under-14 section held in December, 2000.

Ambala win handball tie

Ambala Area played a better game to finally prevail upon Halwara Area 18-12 in the Air Force Inter-Area Handball Championship played here today at the 12 wing Air Force. Till the half time, Ambala team was trailing 5-6. In other matches of the day, Hindon Area beat Halwara Area 15-11 with half time score of 7-5 while Jammu area defeated Srinsgar area 23-12 (half time 12-4).

Police helpline and trauma centres planned

The police proposes to establish a police helpline and trauma centres in the township in order to provide timely first aid to accident victims under the national highway patrol scheme.

28 piggeries destroyed, 61 animals rounded up
Chandigarh, May 10
The Municipal Corporation of Chandigarh today rounded up 61 pigs and destroyed 28 piggeries in Bapu Dham and Colony Number 4 localities of the city as part of a month-long campaign to rid the city of pig menace.

‘Clear backlog of posts’

The UT Administration has directed all heads of departments, boards and corporations to launch a special recruitment drive to clear the backlog of reservation of various categories of posts for Scheduled Castes by August 31.

Admn’s order on new numberplates

The UT Administration today announced that it was giving effect to the new colour scheme in respect of numberplates for motor vehicles. An official press release issued here said that the new colour scheme in respect of numberplates as approved by the Government of India after making an amendment to Rule 50 of the Central Motor Vehicle Rules has been given effect from the dates as given under: In case the motor vehicle is a transport vehicle, the date was before February 1, 2002, and in other cases, on or before July 1, 2002.

Deemed assessment camp draws good response

A two-day deemed assessment camp for sales tax for on-the-spot assessment up to financial year 1997-98 was today started by the Chandigarh Administration’s Excise and Taxation Department at Community Centre in the Industrial Area (Phase I). The camp was inaugurated by Mr Pirthi Chand, SDM, in the presence of office-bearers and members of the Chamber of Chandigarh Industries and Chandigarh Beopar Mandal.
