Tribune News Service

Gurgaon, April 17
Mr Sharad Yadav, Union Minister of Labour, laid the foundation stone of a new ESI Hospital at Sector-9 Gurgaon today. The dignitaries present on the occasion, included Dr Sudha Yadav, member of Parliament, Mr Vinod Vaish, Secretary, Ministry of Labour, Mrs Suman Swarup, Director-General, ESI Corporation. A large number of local employers and representatives of employees’ organisations also attended the function.

On completion, this will be the first ESI Hospital in Gurgaon and sixth in Haryana. The hospital complex will be spread over 5 acres that had been acquired in 1998 from the Haryana Urban Development Authority (Huda) at a cost of Rs 4.36 crore.

The hospital is conceived to be a 100-bed multi-speciality model hospital with adequate provision for expansion. The project cost for the construction of the hospital is estimated to be Rs 10 crore whereas the cost of equipping the hospital with modern diagnostic gadgets and equipment is estimated to cost yet another Rs 5 crore.

The hospital would have specialist service facilities for cardiology with an Intensive Care Unit, radio diagnostic services, including CAT Scan, a blood bank and a modern laboratory besides departments of gynaecology, paediatrics, orthopaedics, ENT and ophthalmology. Specifications for the construction of the hospital would match the surrounding corporate habitat in and around Gurgaon with a built-up area of 10,000 sq. meters, an ESI release said.

As of now, the Gurgaon-Rewari belt has got a huge ESI beneficiary population of around 4 lakh persons for whom the primary medical services are provided through a network of seven dispensaries. The multi-speciality hospital will bring the secondary medical services nearer to the doorstep of workers and their dependants.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr Yadav declared that this 100-bed multi-speciality hospital will be run by the corporation itself as a model hospital in Haryana.

The minister said that the State government had recently agreed to develop this hospital as a model hospital in the State.

The minister added that the corporation had taken up the modernisation of medical services across the country on a war-footing. The services included the provision of latest computerised diagnostic equipment, computerisation of services and strengthening of the support systems, including the manpower.

Earlier in her welcome address Mrs Suman Swarup, Director-General, ESI Corporation stated that the objective of setting up the model hospitals was to provide adequate secondary patient care to the beneficiaries and thereby set a need-based trend for qualitative and quantitative improvements in the service delivery system in ESI service outlets.

The Director-General said that the corporation would make all efforts to commission the project soon in view of the phenomenal growth in the worker population in Gurgaon.
