Dispensary move opposed

SAS Nagar, April 17
The House Owners Welfare Society, Phase-V, today opposed the move of the government to close down the homoeopathic dispensary in the area. Mr A.S. Shyan, general secretary of the society, said that the government was sending back all staff members working on deputation to their original places. He said that the dispensary in Phase-V was a regular one and had not been shifted here from any other place.

He said it was one of the dispensaries sanctioned in 1990 but could not be opened due to lack of accommodation. The welfare society had given a rent-free building for the running of the dispensary.

Gurkirat man of the match

Chandigarh, April 17
DAV Senior Secondary school, Sector 8, defeated St Joseph’s Boys School, Bangalore, by 194 runs in the Parle Champions Trophy cricket match played here at the PCA Stadium, SAS Nagar today. DAV School scored 338 runs for the loss of six wickets. Gurkirat remained unbeaten with 132 runs. In reply, St Joseph’s were bundled out for 144 runs in 43.4 overs. Karanveer took five wickets for 21 runs. Gurkirat was adjudged the man of the match.

In second tie, Springfield Rizvi, Mumbai, outplayed Don Bosco, Chennai, by 190 runs. Mumbai team scored 274 runs in 48.4 overs while Don Bosco were all out for just 84 runs in 14.1 overs.

Chess meet: Anmol Razdan of Tender Heart School, Sector 33, and Preeti of St Xavier’s Senior Secondary school, Sector 44, clinched the boys and girls’ section, respectively of the Chandigarh Chess Championship in under-18 played here on Tuesday, Wednesday. Mr VV De Rozario, Vice-Principal, St Xavier’s, gave away prizes. The final point position at the end of the last round was Girls: Preeti (3), Shweta (2), Rishu Rathi and Shivani (1). Boys: Anmol Razdan (4), Chetan Vikas, Mandeep and Ripudaman (3).

Preeti and Shweta among girls and Anmol Razdan and Chetan Vikas among boys section have been selected to represent Chandigarh in the National Chess Meet.

Tennis tourney: The third day of the ongoing Total tennis championship played at YMCA, Sector 11, here had smooth sailing when the seeded players in different section moved into the next rounds. Kinshuk Sharma, the top seed in under-14 cruised into the last four of this event when he beat Rahul 6-0 in a quarter-final match.

Notice issued to Punjab, Haryana guest houses

Punjab Bhavan and Haryana Nivas have been issued notices to disconnect water supply along with 77 others by the Public Health Department of the Municipal Corporation of Chandigarh (MCC) for violating the ban on the watering of lawns.

The notices have been issued in the wake of the ban effective from April 15. The two Punjab and Haryana Government guest houses were allegedly found violating the order as their lawns were being watered in the morning today. While 35 notices were issued today, rest had been issued yesterday and the day before.

Washing of cars, floors, irrigating plants, lawns, leakage and overflow of overhead tanks and installation of boosters and pumps may invite disconnection of water supply as per the ban.Car washing, irrigating plants and lawns and washing floors is permitted in the evening but banned in the morning.

While in the initial two days verbal warnings were given, most of the notices have been given today.

MC clears waste disposal project

Chandigarh, April 17
The sanitation committee of the Municipal Corporation of Chandigarh recommended to the finance and contract committee the purchase of a mobile road sweeper machine and cleared a power project to dispose of solid waste at Daddu Majra, here today.

Taking note of the slow pace of sanitation process in the city, the committee also cleared a proposal to increase the number of daily wagers for the purpose.

The committee also decided to increase number of employees under private sanitation contracts. It accepted the demand of the sweepers’ union to provide benches for them. The sweepers will also be provided liquid disinfectants in place of soap. The committee cleared engaging of 300 more daily wagers for sanitation work, appointment of an assistant for the Medical Officer, Health, on contract basis and purchase of 115 benches for sweepers.
