Following preliminary investigations into reported irregularities in the recruitment of a junior engineer, the Central Bureau of Investigation has registered a case against a senior PGI functionary for his alleged involvement.

Admn fixes rates for IT park sites
Chandigarh, April 15
The rates for sites in the upcoming 111-acre information technology park in Kishangarh have been fixed. It will cost an applicant Rs 2.55 crore to get a 6-acre site while a site between two to six acres will cost the buyer Rs 1.02 crore per acre. The sites will be allotted on freehold basis.

Sweetshops raided
Panchkula, April 15
The district administration today launched an offensive against those selling eatables in the open and under unhygienic conditions. A number of sweetshops, specially in the rural areas, were raided by a team of District Health officials.

24-hr strike by power men today
Chandigarh, April 15
Employees of the local electricity department will join a 24-hour all-India strike against privatisation from 7 a.m on Tuesday to 7 a.m on Wednesday thus bringing about uncertainty over the entire power supply system of the city.

Grid substations for Sectors 68, 71
SAS Nagar, April 15
Two new grid sub-stations are planned to be set up in Sectors 68 and 71 here for improved power supply. Sources in the Punjab State Electricity Board said today that these sub-stations were being provided under the Accelerated Power Development Programme.

Don’t take Musharraf’s words lightly
General Pervez Musharraf, in an interview to German magazine Der Spiegel, said on April 5 that he was prepared to use nuclear weapons against India in the event of a war. Musharraf’s threat should not be taken lightly by India. For, he, unlike other nuclear powers, does not consider his nukes as a deterrent but a capability which, he thinks must be used when he is pushed to a corner.

Demand to check illegal marble trade

Rural school teachers blamed for poor results

Lack of interest in teaching by staff of rural schools has been identified as the main reason behind poor results of government high and middle schools.
This has come in for strong criticism from the local chapter of the Nationalist Congress Party in a memorandum to the Governor of Punjab and Administrator UT, Lieut-Gen J.F.R. Jacob (retd), here today.

Accused denied bail in forged documents case
Chandigarh, April 15
A local court dismissed a bail plea moved by two accused Balbir Singh and Madan Lal, who were earlier arrested by the CID for helping a Pakistani national, Mohamad Riaz, in procuring forged documents.

Bar Council office shifted
Chandigarh, April 15
The office of the Bar Council of Punjab and Haryana was today shifted from District Court in Sector-17 to SCO-308 in Sector 38 informed the secretary of the council, Mr C.M Munjal. Mr Munjal said the UT Deputy Commissioner had directed the council to vacate the present office on fourth floor of the District Courts Complex.

The Chandigarh Administration has divided the city into four zones for regulation of noise pollution. Certain areas upto 10 metres from the PGI, Panjab University, Capital Complex, educational institutions, courts, nursing homes, and religious falling under the silence zone.
