Tea good for teeth, say experts
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, April 15
There is good news for those who relish tea and bad news for those who use datun, manjan or dandasa to clean teeth. A group of preventive dentistry experts visiting the PGI have stated that tea is good for the teeth since it contains certain amount of fluoride which strengthens teeth. They also informed that studies done in India have proved that traditional forms of things used by many Indians to keep teeth clean are not effective beyond 20-25 per cent as compared to a toothbrush which remains the best tool to clean teeth.

Do’s and don'ts for good teeth:

  • Use small headed soft brushes.
  • Brush properly twice a day spending atleast ten minutes brushing.
  • Use dental floss and interdental brushes (both available in the market) as religiously as a brush to clean the interdental spaces.
  • Use a disclosing agent after brushing to see if any plaque is left on any part of the teeth. (disclosing agents like Plaksee are available in the market)

Dr Zhang Boxue from China, Dr Dai-Il Paik from Korea and Dr Osamu Sakai from Japan are visiting the Centre of Oral Health Sciences, PGI, to figure out the modalities of organising an international meet on preventive dentistry in the city in November this year.

Dr Zhang Boxue, stated that there were three main points one needs to remember in order to have healthy teeth. One needs to eat sweets intelligently, one should brush teeth properly and one should use fluoride to provide that extra strength to the teeth to fight formation of caries. “If the amount of fluoride is not sufficient in the drinking water, one can use toothpastes rich in fluoride or mouthwashes with fluoride which is good enough in our country, foods like milk etc are fortified with flouride,” he said.

Explaining these points Dr K. Gauba of the Department said 70 per cent of the children below the age of 12 in India had teeth with cavities. “It is a myth that milk teeth can be taken lightly. Cavities in milk teeth amount to infection in the gums and the permanent teeth get spoilt even before they come out,” he said.

Dr Boxue also informed that bleeding gums which was a common problem too was because of bacterial formation on the teeth passing on to the gums.

Dr Osamu Sakai stated that according to the World Health Organisation, fluoride should form a part of drinking water in the world, a regulation which has been implemented in many countries of the world. Dr A.K. Utreja of the Department explained in the city, the amount of fluoride content in drinking water was however far less than that was required to make a marked improvement in the health the city resident’s teeth. “But since now there were fluoride rich toothpastes available, the response was good enough,” added Dr H.S. Chawla, head of the department.
