Villagers to approach President
Ludhiana, April 7
Continuing with their pursuit to help the ousted Air Marshal Manjit Singh Sekhon, the panchayats of Issewal and surrounding villages, supported by a number of MPs from the state, today decided to approach the President, Mr K.R. Narayanan, to request him to re-instate the ousted Air Force Officer. The decision to meet the President and seek his intervention was taken at a meeting of several villages of the region held at Issewal today.

Encroachments on rise in Focal Point area

Having devoured all "encroachable" sites within the old city , the ugly monster of encroachment is now rapidly spreading its tentacles in the Focal Point area which still offers plenty of open space to encroachers.

Poor traffic sense adds to chaos
T
HE increasing number of vehicles in the city has not only led to traffic chaos but has also highlighted the poor traffic sense and utter disregard for the fellow citizens among Ludhiana residents. Driving instead of becoming a pleasure these days is a nuisance, which creates a number of scenes on the roads every day.

It was around 12 noon today at the Cheema chowk, near the row of lottery stalls along the narrow road running parallel to the overbridge, that a three-wheeler carrying a passenger came to a halt. The driver alighted from the auto and went to buy some lottery tickets while the passenger remained seated.

Dilip Thapar goes on fast
Ludhiana, April 7
A local resident, Mr Dilip Thapar started his fast here today to press for the construction of memorial at the birthplace of martyr Sukhdev Thapar. This morning he started his march from Naughara in the Chaura Bazar area, the birthplace of the martyr, concluded at Daresi Ground.

Cong camp jubilant over Malout win
Ludhiana, April 7
The victory in Malout was marked by celebrations by the Congress leaders and workers here today. Immediately after the results were declared the Congress workers led by the District Congress Committee (urban) president, Mr K.K. Bawa, took out a victory procession and distributed ladoos. Some activists also performed bhangra.

‘Allot tickets to councillors’
Ludhiana, April 7
Local Congress leaders have suggested that the party should allot tickets for the Ludhiana Municipal Corporation elections to all 22 party councillors. Besides, those candidates who have lost the elections on party tickets with nominal margin should also be considered for the forthcoming MC elections.

The Punjab Pardesh Congress Committee (Legal Cell) organised a function to facilitate the newly elected Congress members of the Punjab Vidhan Sabha. The function was attended by Mr Gurcharan Singh Ghalib, MP, Mr Rakesh Pandey, minister, Harnam Das Johar, MLA, and former speaker, Punjab, Vidhan Sabha, Mr Malkeet Singh Birni, MLA, Mr Surinder Dawar, MLA and large number of lawyers and intellectuals.

Former Navy chief flays foreign policy

Former Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Ramdass today said only talks can lead to a proper settlement of the Kashmir problem. He was speaking here today, after inaugurating a conference organised by the Ludhiana chapter of the Indian Doctors for Peace and Development (IDPD).

She is into interior and exterior designing from her early twenties. To her credit is the designing interiors of hotels, farm houses, offices and residences. She is Hema Dhaul and these days in Ludhiana. She has done up the lobby of Maurya Shertaon, Siddarth and lobby of Taj Hotel in New Delhi. She has done the interior of three hotels in Jaipur, besides hundreds of houses. Hema is attached to famous architects and landscapists in New Delhi.

Nature in its bounty and wisdom indicates that man ought to change his food habits in the summer. The juicy, musk melons, watermelons come in abundance in summers. For nature is aware of the fact that due to heat and excessive sweating, people get dehydrated and they need to replenish more water. Watermelons and musk melons have 96 per cent water content.

Parivar Divas celebrated
Ludhiana, April 7
In a unique scheme aimed at the recreation of police personnel and their families, the Ludhiana police today celebrated a Parivar Divas at the police lines here today. A three day intra-district sports meet which included volleyball, kabaddi, tug of war and athletics. According to SSP Harpreet Singh Sidhu, members of the force participated with enthusiasm in the event, organised for the first time in Ludhiana and only twice in the state.

Plea to regularise ad hoc safai  workers
Ludhiana, April 7
The Akhil Bharatiya Safai Mazdoor Congress has called upon the Punjab Government to regularise hundreds of ad hoc safai workers who were employed in the Municipal Corporation here for a number of years.

Mrs Sudershana Jain is old. She lost her husband. Within few months, one of her sons was found dead. Later, her second son, her only hope, was put behind the bars after being implicated in a criminal trespassing case and under the NDPS Act.

Two rifles recovered
Jagraon, April 7
The Ambala police has arrested Kuldeep Singh of Paddan and Darshan Singh of Mahesh Nagar and recovered two rifles, which they had snatched at Saholi village. A case under Sections 382, IPC, and 25, 54, 59 Arms Act has been registered.

Industrialists meet K.N. Pathak

Panjab University, Chandigarh, has decided to introduce professional courses to suit needs of the industry in Ludhiana. In order to get a feed back, the Vice-Chancellor, Panjab University, Mr K.N. Pathak had a meeting with industrialists and Senate members from here yesterday at Ramgarhia College for Women.
