Bengal Mumbai, BSF earn full points
Our Sports Reporter

New Delhi, March 22
Bengal Mumbai Football Club and Border Security Force (BSF), Jalandhar scored victories to earn full points in the Phase-II of the Second Division National Football League at the Ambedkar Stadium in the Capital on Friday.

In the first match, Bengal Mumbai prevailed over Delhi Soccer Association league runners-up SAIL-Indian Nationals 2-1 to secure three full points while BSF edged past Assam State Electricity Board (ASEB), Guwahati 1-0. The strong Bengal Mumbai team called the shots in the first half, and the Nationals’ defenders were pushed into a corner by Mumbai forwards Peter Chidi, captain Adesinha Sadiq and veteran Chima Okerie. Chima Okerie drew first blood in the 33rd minute with a nice placement from the top of the box. Though Chima lacked the speed of yore, he had penetration and power to rattle the Nationals’ defence.

In the second half, Bengal Mumbai consolidated their lead when Peter Chidi headed home a high lob floated by Sushil Karthak in the 59th minute (2-0). Nationals reduced the margin with a defence-splitting long-range shot in the 84th minute to make it 2-1.

BSF struggled to eke out a lone-goal victory against the spirited Assam team. The Assam boys created some fluttering moves, but their strikers, M S Dawngliana and Abraham L Mhar, wasted many golden chances to score. BSF netted the match-winner through mid-fielder Tapan Bhattacharya, who headed home off a cross from Santosh Kujur in the 89th minute. BSF’s Gurjit Singh and Dharminder Singh were booked with the yellow card for foul play by referee Chamchuk Lama from Sikkim.

BSF have now gathered six points from two matches. There will be no match on Saturday. On Sunday, AG Haryana take on ASEB in the first match at 2 p m followed by a match between Bengal Mumbai and BSF at 4 pm.
