Plastic bags banned in city
Ludhiana, March 6
The Deputy Commissioner, Mr Anurag Aggarwal, has imposed a ban on use of plastic bags for carriage and transportation of edible products. In a notification, issued under ‘Recycles Plastic (Manufacture and Usage) Rules 1999,’ it has been stipulated that according to Rule 4, bags or cartons made from recycled plastic would not be used for storage or transportation of edible products.

DC asks officials to redress public grievances

Thousands of students of Class X and class XII appeared for their written examination at 348 centres set by the Punjab School Education Board here today. While the written test of English for Class X students were held in the morning session, students of class XII from various streams appeared in the evening round.

BJP workers burn Sonia’s effigy
Ludhiana, March 6
Hundreds of BJP workers today took out a procession and staged a demonstration in front of the Clock Tower and also burnt an effigy of Congress President Sonia Gandhi for her reported remarks about the Godhra incident, where about 60 kar sevaks were burnt to death. Some Congress workers also tried to confront them and prevent them from burning the effigy.

‘Migrant workers being exploited’

The District Youth Congress (DYC) has expressed concern over exploitation of migrant workers by owners of industrial units and commercial establishments. It says that the government and the district administration has failed to assess the gravity of the situation and take corrective steps.

In Ludhiana the Labour Department, under the National Child Labour Policy, is running 40 schools for child labour with the basic objective of suitably rehabilitating the children withdrawn from employment and to reduce the incidence of child labour in areas where there is a known concentration of child labour.

Rs 33 cr elevated road project well on its way

The project for construction of 2.5 km long ‘elevated road’, first of its kind in the region, is progressing well and the executing agency — M/s Skanska Cementations India having completed the preliminary work of soil testing and pile testing, have already laid 56 piles, out of total 380 to be laid on the entire stretch on Old G.T. Road between the Jagraon Bridge and Chand Cinema.

Six injured in brawl
Ludhiana, March 6
Six persons, including three women, were injured in a brawl that arose out of misunderstanding between neighbours in Puneet Nagar on the Tibba road on Monday night. Both parties have lodged complaints with the Basti Jodhewal police.

BSNL penalised for delay in providing connection

The District Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum has directed the Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) to pay Rs 2,500 as compensation on account of deficiency in services, including cost of litigation to Mr Prithi Singh, a resident of Partap Singh Wala village.
