Near total bandh in city
Ludhiana, March 1
A near total bandh was observed in the city on the call of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP). Baring a few skirmishes at three places, no major incident of violence was reported from any part of the city.

SHO suspended for dereliction of duty
Ludhiana, March 1
The district police authorities today put under suspension, Sub-Inspector and SHO Model Town Balraj Singh on the charges of dereliction of duty and disobeying orders in the investigation related to the infamous Jawadi murder case. There were also some unconfirmed reports that some corruption charges had also been levelled against the cop for ‘favouring’the accused party in the case.

Doctor booked for girl’s death
Ludhiana, March 1
The infamous illegal abortion trade in the city has consumed another life. An Ayurvedic doctor of Abdullahpur Basti, claiming to have a legal degree from a Varanasi college, has been booked by the Model Town police on the charge of causing death due to negligence of a 15-year-old girl, on whom the accused had performed an abortion operation.

Muslim bodies flay attack
Ludhiana, March 1
The Indian Muslim Council, Punjab, and the Ludhiana Welfare Society have condemned the attack on the Sabarmati Express in Gujarat in which 58 persons were killed. In a press note issue here today, Mr Ateeq-ur-Rehman, president of the council, said the culprits should be severely punished.

Tense day passes off peacefully
Ludhiana, March 1
Notwithstanding the brave face put up by the Shahi Imam of Jama Masjid, Maulana Habib-u-Rehman Ludhianvi, and his brother and Punjab president of the Indian Muslim Council, Maulana Atiq-u-Rehman, it was a tense day here, but it passed off peacefully. Attendance at Jama Masjid was relatively low.

Railway road occupied by taxi operators
Ahmedgarh, March 1
The Railway Road, which winds up from the local railway station to Gandhi chowk, and is the main arterial road of the town, has been literally hijacked by taxi-stand operators in connivance with the Railway authorities concerned.

Three injured in group clash
Ludhiana, March 1
Three persons, including a three-year-old child, were injured in a dispute between two families in Bhatra mohalla of Amarpura locality here on Wednesday night. According to information, two brothers in the locality, had a tiff with Sewak, another resident in their neighbourhood.

7 booked for attempt to murder
Jagraon, March 1
The local police has registered a case against Raja, a resident of Jatpura village; Maghar Singh, former sarpanch of Lamme village, Iqbal Singh, Darshan Singh, Midda Singh, Ravinder Singh, alias Honey all residents of Lamme village under Sections 307, 323, 336, 506, 427, 148, 149 of the IPC on the statement of Amandip Singh of the village.

Cycle industry stops production
Ludhiana, March 1
Hundreds of bicycle and bicycle part units here protested today against the imposition of 4 per cent excise duty by shutting down their production. In a press conference, called by eighteen associations of the industry, the industry representatives urged the government to take back its decision otherwise they would be forced to intensify their agitation.

42 furnace units go on strike
Mandi Gobindgarh, March 1
Owners of 42 units of induction furnace went on an indefinite strike this morning, affecting 15,000 families of workers.

Farmers launch thikri pehras
Lalton (Ludhiana), March 1
Facing an unusual problem of theft of electricity wires from the tubewells, several farmers in this and surrounding villages have been forced to launch thikri pehras to avert the financial loss and the subsequent damage to the crop due to the delay in irrigation.

Farmers asked to focus on high-value crops
Ludhiana, March 1
The Vice-Chancellor of Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), Dr K.S. Aulakh, today called upon the farmers to shift the area of cultivation from high- volume-low-value crops to low-volume-high-value crops.

The Punjabi Teachers’ Association organised a seminar on ‘gurmat ideology’ at Government College for Women here today.
Addressing the students of Punjabi Department, Dr Amarjit Singh Dua, president of the association, said that recitation of gurbani helped in improving concentration of the mind.

Students and their teachers and guardians have blamed the system of science education of the Punjab School Education Board for the poor performance of science students in the matriculation examination.

Kuldeep, Jasvinder declared best athletes

Kuldeep Singh and Jasvinder Kaur were declared best athletes of Shanti Tara College at its seventh annual athletics meet, which concluded here on Thursday. Mr Prem Gupta, president, and Mr A.K. Malhotra, general secretary of the college, presided over the opening and closing sessions, respectively.
