DPI’s instruction to employees

The DPI (Schools), Mr D.S. Saroya, here today said while arrangements for the school employees who are registered voters in Punjab by granting them special casual leave had been made, employees of the Education Department would have to prove their participation in the electoral process.

Hyena, lion cub die in zoo
Chandigarh, February 12
Chhat Bir zoo lost an ageing hyena and an ailing lion cub here today.
The 17-year-old hyena could not eat because of an inoperative lower jaw. The hyena which was transported to Ludhiana for special treatment was sent back as the veterinary doctors felt it would not be able to bear the operation at this age.

Proposal to make Panchkula permit-free zone for autos
Panchkula, February 12
The State Transport Department proposes to make the township and its peripheral areas a ‘permit-free zone’ for plying of auto-rickshaws.
Sources in the department yesterday informed Chandigarh Tribune, that a draft policy in this regard had been prepared and it would be soon submitted to the state government for its approval.

Counter-complaint against Badals
Chandigarh, February 12
Reacting to the defamation cases filed against it by the Badal family, the Congress today filed a counter defamation complaint against the Punjab Chief Minister, Mr Parkash Singh Badal, and his son, Mr Sukhbir Singh Badal, besides two others. The case will come up for preliminary evidence on February 23.

Muddy road denies access to schools

Taxi union gives rent offers to MC

The Taxi Workers Union of Chandigarh has offered a rent of Rs 1575 for an area below 2000 square feet and Rs 2275 for an area above 2000 square feet per month to the Municipal Corporation.

1 held for rash driving
Chandigarh, February 12
An auto-rickshaw driver, Rajesh Kumar, was arrested by the police for rash and negligent driving after a resident of Sector 45, Amardeep Singh, reported that the accused rammed into his car near the Sectors 35-43 crossing. While nobody was injured, the vehicles were damaged. A case has been registered.

The crime branch of the local police has arrested a second person for his alleged involvement in a case of fake school certificates unearthed in the city a few days ago.

Panchkula NIFD students get diplomas

Order against Rathore quashed
Chandigarh, February 12
Allowing an application filed by Haryana’s Director-General of Police S.P.S. Rathore, Mr Justice R.C. Kathuria of the Punjab and Haryana High Court today quashed an order directing the addition of Section 306 IPC, (abetment to suicide), to the charge sheet.

5-year RI for abducting woman
Panchkula, February 12
The Additional Sessions Judge, Mr S.K. Kapoor, today sentenced Anish Jumma, alias Billu, a resident of Meerut, to five-year rigorous imprisonment besides a fine.
Mr Manoj Yadav, SP, said the accused had been arrested for abducting the wife of Mr Harish Mittal, a resident of Sector 7, from Meerut on November 25, 1999.

Petition dismissed
Chandigarh, February 12
Mr Justice Amar Dutt of the Punjab and Haryana High Court today dismissed a petition filed by a social organisation challenging a notification through which the Municipal Council was created for certain sectors of the Panchkula's Urban Estate.

Directive to nursing homes, hospitals

The UT Health Department has made it mandatory for all nursing homes and hospitals to inform the Social Welfare Department if they find any abandoned or destitute child on their premises.

Two-day dental check-up and hygiene camps — one each at Sadhna institute for mentally handicapped, Mani Majra, and Nari Niketan, Sector 26 — were organised by members of the Lioness and Lions Clubs of Panchkula Central today.

Spikers make city proud
Chandigarh, February 12
The Chandigarh schools volleyball team under-17 boys have just returned home from Pargi (Andhra Pradesh) after winning the coveted gold medal in the 47th edition of the National School Games. It was a rare distinction for the city spikers when they competed with players from 16 states.
