Directive to nursing homes, hospitals

The UT Health Department has made it mandatory for all nursing homes and hospitals to inform the Social Welfare Department if they find any abandoned or destitute child on their premises.

The nursing homes will also have to send a copy of such intimation to Missionaries of Charity, Sector 23. A spokesman of the Administration said in a press release issued today that the directive has also prohibited the nursing homes and hospitals to undertake any type of adoption activity and requested them to comply with the instructions. Undertaking any kind of adoption activity will be illegal.

Dental, hygiene camps

Two-day dental check-up and hygiene camps — one each at Sadhna institute for mentally handicapped, Mani Majra, and Nari Niketan, Sector 26 — were organised by members of the Lioness and Lions Clubs of Panchkula Central today.

The Director, Social Welfare, Ms Madhavi Kataria, while inaugurating the camp at Nari Niketan, appreciated the services rendered by the Lions Clubs of Panchkula Central in arranging such camps. The Additional General Manager, The Tribune, Mr O.P. Arora, while inaugurating the camp at Mani Majra, stated that more and more non-government organisations should come forward to undertake such camps for the benefit of the less privileged sections of society.

Free medicines and fruits were distributed among the patients.

INSCOL’s offer

Spikers make city proud

Chandigarh, February 12
The Chandigarh schools volleyball team under-17 boys have just returned home from Pargi (Andhra Pradesh) after winning the coveted gold medal in the 47th edition of the National School Games. It was a rare distinction for the city spikers when they competed with players from 16 states. In the final, Chandigarh boys defeated Uttar Pradesh 3-0 (25-19, 25-19, 25-23). Balwinder was adjudged the best setter in the tournament.

The team was represented by Raju Chauhan (Captain), Surinder Kumar, Suresh Kumar, Guwinder Singh, Sandeep, Lalit Kumar, Vinod Negi, Vikram, Barinder Singh Surinder Kumar II and Aman Kumar. Dharamvir Singh accompanied the team as coach cum manager.

Earlier, on February 5, Chandigarh girls Volleyball team (under-19) had also won the gold medal in the National School Games held at Patiala.

Football meet

On the second day of the Swami Vivekananda Inter-Departmental Football Tournament-2002 held today at the Law Grounds, Department of Maths outclassed Department of Geography in a penalty shootout with score 4-3. Earlier, the three-day tournament was inaugurated by the former Chief Justice, Punjab and Haryana High Court, Mr JV Gupta.

As many as 15 teams from various departments of the university are taking part. The winners of yesterday’s matches were, Department of Pharmacy, Department of Physical Education (B) and Department of Law (B). Tomorrow, the finals will be played at 4 pm.

Athletics meet

The third annual athletics meet of the BR DAV College for Women, Kurali, was held last evening on the college premises. Ms Kamaljit Kaur was adjudged the best athlete. The winners of various events were: Sukhwinder Kaur, Baljinder Kaur, Kamaljeet Kaur, Gurmeet Kaur, Mandeep Kaur, Rajni and Gurmeet, Gurpreet Kaur, Poonam, Harmeet Kaur and Daljeet Kaur.

Mr Mangat Ram Verma, an NRI from Canada, was the chief guest. Apart from donating money, he also promised to pay for one student’s education every year. Mr Alam Singh Manna, a social worker, was the guest of honour. Earlier, Captain S.Chaudhary, Principal of the college, highlighted the sports achievements of the college.

Cricket match

The Chandigarh Press Club XI will play against UT Administration XI for the Annual Samuel Banerjee Trophy cricket match to be held on February 16 at Sector 16 Cricket Stadium. The match will begin at 9.30 a.m.
