Environment main theme of school function
Tribune News Service

Panchkula, February 12
The annual day function at St. Michael’s School here was celebrated with environment being the main theme.

The students, in their own inimical way, presented the creation of five elements of the universe. Then they depicted the coming of man in this universe and his progress. It was shown that man slowly got proud of his intellectual feats and glorifying in his greed, pollutes the environment.

Slowly, his inner voice and his conscious guides him to live in harmony with his surroundings . The choreography then showed how clean air, pure water , controlled fire and smokeless skies make him happy and even other animals on the planet Earth relish in the bountiful beauties of nature and search for his mates.

This ended with the children breaking into a song and dance sequence, following his excitement at being able to develop a balance with the nature.

The chief guest, Mr G.S. Sardana, Director, Manav Mangal School, Chandigarh and Panchkula, appreciated the children for a beautiful presentation in their effort to spread the message of living in harmony. Earlier, the Director of the school, Col Mahindru, read the annual report of the school and informed that the results of the school were cent per cent this year.

HIGH COURT
Order against Rathore quashed
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, February 12
Allowing an application filed by Haryana’s Director-General of Police S.P.S. Rathore, Mr Justice R.C. Kathuria of the Punjab and Haryana High Court today quashed an order directing the addition of Section 306 IPC, (abetment to suicide), to the charge sheet.

Challenging the order passed on October 23 last year by CBI’s Special Judicial Magistrate at Ambala allowing an application for adding the section, Rathore, in his plea, claimed that order was illegal, manifestly wrong and deserved to be set aside.

Giving details, he submitted that the fact regarding Ruchika’s suicide had not even been prima facie established from the statements recorded during the investigation. He further submitted that it was nowhere mentioned in the charge sheet that he was in any manner responsible for Ruchika’s death. There was no connection between Ruchika’s death on December 29, 1993, and the alleged act of molestation on August 12, 1990.

His counsel had contended that Ruchika, in her statement recorded during the inquiry, had not disclosed her intention to commit suicide on account of the humiliation she was subjected to on account of the alleged act.

Costs imposed in appointment case

In her petition, Ms Jasvir Kaur Saini had contended that her claim had been illegally rejected on the ground that she was over-age on January 1, 1996, even though the upper age limit had been raised.

Mann’s plea dismissed

Mr Justice Adarsh Kumar Goel of the High Court today dismissed a petition filed by Mr Simranjit Singh Mann, MP, seeking the registration of a first information report against Prime Minister A.B. Vajpayee, Home Minister L.K. Advani and Congress President Sonia Gandhi for allegedly brandishing swords during election rallies.

In his petition, Mr Mann had stated that the act of brandishing swords, as evident from photographs published in the newspapers, was an offence under Section 25 of Arms Act and was punishable with imprisonment for a term not less than three years, extending up to seven years.

ADAs’ finalisation held up

Issuing notice of motion for August 29 to the state of Punjab and other respondents, a Division Bench of the High Court on Tuesday ordered that the selection of Assistant District Attorneys will not be finalised.

The orders issued by the Bench, headed by Mr Justice N.K. Sodhi, against the finalisation of the selection process are significant as, according to petitioner Satnam Singh of Barnala, 51 posts of ADAs had been advertised. Seeking the quashing of the entire process, the petitioner had also sought directions for reholding the examinations under the supervision of the High Court.

Alleging the adoption of corrupt practices, his counsel had claimed that the interview was illegal, null and void. News reports regarding corrupt practices too had been published, he had added.
