Safin will play German seventh seed Tommy Haas, who beat former finalist Marcelo Rios of Chile 7-6 (7/2) 6-4 6-7 (2/7) 7-6 (7/5) in the night match.

Ferreira warned Safin might be let down by his temperamental character.

“I think he has a great chance to win,” said Ferreira who retired injured from their quarter-final with Safin leading 5-2 in the first set.

“I thought if I had got through this one it would have got easier.

“This guy is playing great. I watched him play Sampras the other night and he was very, very good.”

The ninth seeded Safin knocked out 13-times Grand Slam champion Pete Sampras in the fourth round on Monday.

“If he plays at his best, he’s almost unbeatable. His mental side is the weakest. You never know, he might come out his next match and play a horrible one, that’s the way he is,” Ferreira said.

“But as far as his game goes, he’s got every shot and he’s a great competitor.”

But he said Safin, who has run into trouble with umpires in his two previous matches, was not as combustible as Goran Ivanisevic who last year performed an amazing transformation to finally win Wimbledon.

“I don’t think he’s as bad as Goran but he could get better,” Ferreira added.

Safin felt his win over Sampras had strengthened his belief in himself and he said his disputes with officials were part of the game.

“I’m growing up. You learn about everything,” he said.

“Today was a present but against Pete I had to go out and work. And I did it,” he said. “When you are confident everything works much easier, your forehand, your serve.”

Safin, 22 on Sunday’s finals day, is the only Grand Slam men’s champion left in a tournament which has lost seven of its top eight men’s seeds.

“I didn’t have to spend too much energy on the court today. I can save my energy for the semi-finals,” he said.

Haas, the highest remaining seed in the tournament, won his quarter-final over 1998 runner-up Rios in three hours 17 minutes to set up his Friday semi-final with Safin.

It is the second Grand Slam semi-final for the 23-year-old German, who played against eventual champion Yevgeny Kafelnikov in the last four here in 1999.

“I’ve tried to be consistent over the last couple of months and my serve was good tonight especially in the first two sets when Marcelo had a lot of break points but couldn’t convert them,” said Haas. AFP

Tyson sparks brawl
Bites Lennox Lewis on leg

London, January 23
Mike Tyson plumbed new depths by biting world heavyweight champion Lennox Lewis on the leg at a New York news conference designed to promote the richest fight in history.

The former undisputed world champion, who bit a chunk out of Evander Holyfield’s ear in a 1997 title fight, started an all-out brawl on the stage after clashing with the Britons’ bodyguards yesterday.

“Mike actually bit his leg,” exclaimed Lewis’s business manager Adrian Ogun.

Tyson was submerged and Lewis pulled off his podium as security staff and members of both fighters’ camps waded in to the melee.

Lewis, his jacket ripped down the right hand side, left the arena but an agitated Tyson continued to scuffle and then began to abuse the media.

“You b.. you coward, you faggot,’’ he screamed at one reporter.

Now the Nevada State Athletic Commission will decide whether Tyson will be granted a licence for the fight scheduled for April 6 in Las Vegas.

The 35-year-old American, who is also currently under investigation by the Las Vegas police for an alleged rape must convince at least three of the five members next Tuesday that he is mentally fit to fight.

“It (the brawl) will be another factor the commission will have to take under consideration,’’ said Mr Marc Ratner, executive director of the commission.

“They can certainly ask him questions about it at the licensing hearing next Tuesday. They can ask him all kinds of questions.’’

Lewis, holder of the World Boxing Council (WBC) and International Boxing Federation (IBF) titles, will now consider whether it is worthwhile proceeding with the fight he believes will confirm he is the best heavyweight of his generation.

The 36-year-old Briton has already indicated he would retire if he defeated Tyson.

“I will evaluate my options when the relevant boxing commissions have ruled,” Lewis said. Reuters

Under-19 World Cup: India, Australia in super league

Christchurch, January 23
There were no surprises today when defending champions India, Australia and New Zealand were the first teams to book their places in the super league phase of the ICC under-19 World Cup.

Australia’s 42-run victory over the West Indies means they will almost certainly top group D, while India’s convincing 71-run drubbing of South Africa in Auckland put the title favourites at the head of group A.

Propelled by a sparkling unbeaten 105 by wicketkeeper-batsman Chandan Madan, the Indians posted a modest 227 for eight in their 50 overs. The elegant right-hander struck eight fours and two sixes as the South African attack struggled to find consistency.

South Africa got off to a solid start with Steven Cook and David Jacobs putting on 44 for the first wicket. But 16-year-old off spinner Rakesh Mohanty took two for 24 and later Irfan Pathan (2-18) and Stuart Binny (2-31) chipped in to dismiss South Africa for 156 in 42.3 overs.

Meanwhile, hosts New Zealand finished their group C commitments with a six-wicket win over Namibia, who were unable to repeat their heroics of the previous day when they caused a major upset by beating Sri Lanka.

Kiwis now head the group, leaving Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka to fight it out tomorrow for the second spot and qualification for the super league.

England have almost certainly sewn up a place in the next round after a convincing win over Papua New Guinea. They now have nine points with Pakistan and Nepal contesting the last qualification spot.

To qualify Pakistan need to beat England on Friday and hope that Nepal either lose to Papua New guinea or fail to pick up a bonus point.

Australia’s victory in Dunedin came after West Indies dismissed their opponents for 200 with fast bowler Ryan Nurse taking five for 28 and Narsingh Deonarine 3-28.

The Australian innings was given substance by a 59-run eighth wicket partnership between Beau Casson (28) and Xavier Docherty (23).

Needing just four an over for a win that would have taken them atop the group, West Indies failed to combat Australia’s spin attack with Doherty taking 3-24 and left-armer Casson 3-48.

Tonito Willett hit five fours but his 34 was the top score in the innings as West Indies were dismissed for 158.

New Zealand’s bowlers failed to get into their groove against Namibia at Hagley Oval with Barton Can Rooi, man of the match in Namibia’s win over Sri Lanka, continuing his good form with a 76-ball 62, which included seven fours and a six.

Namibia’s hopes of a second successive win were boosted as New Zealand lost two wickets with the score on 101 but Neil Broom hit eight fours and two sixes on his way to a match winning 85.

Captain Ross Taylor offered valuable support making an unbeaten 58 as the pair added 84 for the fourth wicket.

Papua New Guinea made a respectable 222 for six against England with opener Frank Joseph falling eight runs short of a deserved century. Papua New Guinea rarely play 50 overs matches and their inexperience came to the fore at the end of their innings as they added just 52 in the final 10 overs despite having eight wickets in hand.

England’s strength is their batting and openers Kadeer Ali and Nick Compton, grandson of former England great Denis, got them off to a flier. Ali took 22 off one over from Kohu Dai as he played some wonderful cover drives and timed the ball with aplomb.

Ali brought up his 50 off just 22 deliveries but he was eventually dismissed for a fine 73 from 43 balls that included 14 fours. Compton went on to make 58 and captain Nicky Peng scored 41 as England reached their target with 22 overs to spare to earn a bonus point.

Tomorrow, India play their final group match against Bangladesh in Auckland, Sri Lanka meet Zimbabwe at Hagley Oval in Christchurch, and the West Indies take on Kenya at the Carisbrook Stadium in Dunedin. AFP
