Trescothick’s superb ton in vain Kolkata, January 19 England, chasing 282 for victory, were coasting at 224 for four in the 36th over — with Trescothick having struck 13 fours and two big sixes — when their momentum stalled in unfortunate fashion. The left-handed opener was given out lbw to fast bowler Javagal Srinath off a delivery that television replays indicated had pitched well outside leg-stump. With the in-form Trescothick dismissed, the rest of the England innings quickly fell away and the last four wickets crashed for just 28 runs in six overs. All-rounder Andrew Flintoff was run out for 23 by Harbhajan Singh on the cover point boundary and off-spinner Singh deceived Jeremy Snape in the flight to have him out lbw for four as England slipped to 233 for seven. Paceman Ajit Agarkar then struck three times in the space of 10 balls, removing James Foster (2), Darren Gough (0) and Ashley Giles (18) as India won with five overs to spare. Propelled by an aggressive career-best knock of 71 by Dinesh Mongia, India posted a challenging 281 for eight in their allotted 50 overs. Indian skipper Sourav Ganguly elected to bat first on a wicket that promised a lot of runs and the left-handed Mongia continued the fine form he showed in domestic cricket, unleashing a barrage of strokes on both sides of the wicket to guide the home team to a challenging total. After the opening pair of Ganguly (42) and Sachin Tendulkar (36) had laid the foundation with a brisk 78-run partnership, Mongia set the stadium ablaze with his fireworks to register his first half century in his fifth match. The hosts lost three quick wickets in the slog overs after Mongia’s dismissal but another comeback man Hemang Badani produced a cameo knock towards the end of the innings to ensure a total beyond the 275 mark. Badani scored 35 off 33 balls and got good support from Harbhajan Singh who contributed a useful 18 runs. The visitors require to score at a run rate of 5.64 runs per over for a win and take a 1-0 lead in the six-match limited overs series. The Indian innings got off to a decent start as Ganguly and Tendulkar put on more than 50 runs in the first 10 overs without really taking too many risks. They negotiated the England speedsters Darren Gough and Matthew Hoggard comfortably and scored at a brisk pace. Scoreboard India: Ganguly c Hussain b Flintoff 42 Tendulkar b Flintoff 36 D. Explosive Cairns fashions win Brisbane, January 19 Cairns returned to the ground where he tormented Australia’s bowlers during the Test series last November, hitting an unbeaten 102 from 99 balls as New Zealand (244-6) passed South Africa’s target of 241 with five balls to spare. It was a remarkable rescue mission after New Zealand’s run chase appeared doomed at 73 for four in their chase. Then the powerful Cairns strode to the wicket and began a trademark onslaught which included nine fours and three sixes, inflicting the first loss on the South Africans in the tournament. It was his fourth ton in one-day internationals. The Kiwis were carried home on the back of a stirring seventh-wicket stand of 84 between Cairns and Adam Parore, who finished with 21 not out. Cairns completed his century in stunning fashion with the first ball of the last over, hammering a delivery from South African captain Shaun Pollock to the cover boundary. The win takes New Zealand to the top of the tri-nations ladder, with 12 points, ahead of South Africa (8) and Australia (0). It was the result that Australia didn’t want, leaving the winless home team further behind in the race for the finals. Scorecard South Africa: Gibbs b Franklin 0 Kirsten c and b Harris

Halt rotation, Healy tells selectors Brisbane, January 19 This would enable selectors to establish which players in the limited-overs squad were seriously out of form, he argued here today as the Australian selectors sat down to pick a team for tomorrow’s crucial game here against South Africa. Healy urged the retention of 11 players for three successive matches so selectors could accurately gauge which changes were needed. “We must show faith in form players of the recent past then we know whether they have lost their shine,” he said. “Do the job for three matches, or don’t play — that’s the way to go,” he said. “Then they are not getting the soft option of being rotated, they get dropped.” Australia, after completing 19 one-day wins in succession at home before this summer, have lost the first three matches of the tri-nations tournament. Unless they beat South Africa tomorrow, they will be in serious danger of missing a spot in next month’s best-of-three finals. Healy said he supported the rotation theory, but not for every match. “It has not been the rotation system that is not working,” he said. “It’s about the players they are rotating.” “You need to give blokes two or three games, then look at the situation. At the moment, we simply do not know who is in good form.”

Aussies make four changes Brisbane, January 19 Wicketkeeper Adam Gilchrist, opening batsman Matthew Hayden, all-rounder Andrew Symonds and fast bowler Andy Bichel were selected today in the eleven for the match to be played in front of a sell-out crowd of 35,000-plus at the Gabba Ground. Dropped from the side beaten by New Zealand in Sydney on Thursday are stand-in gloveman Ryan Campbell, regular middle-order batsman Michael Bevan and fast bowler Brett Lee. All-rounder Ian Harvey was demoted to 12th man duties. Australia have been beaten in all three of their opening matches in the $95,000 tournament — twice by New Zealand and once by South Africa. A further loss tomorrow would make it difficult for the World Cup one-day champions to reach next’s month’s best-of-three finals. The return of Gilchrist in place of Campbell was predictable. The side’s regular gloveman, Gilchrist was given a brief leave of absence from Thursday’s match so he could return to Perth, Western Australia, to be with his wife and newly-born son. But Bevan, Lee and Harvey were apparently removed because selectors are not satisfied they are earning their keep. Bevan’s absence is somewhat puzzling because he top-scored with 66 in the last match against New Zealand. However, it is believed selectors may not be happy with his scoring rate. Team: Steve Waugh (capt), Adam Gilchrist, Matthew Hayden, Mark Waugh, Ricky Ponting, Damien Martyn, Andrew Symonds, Shane Warne, Andrew Bichel, Jason Gillespie, Glenn McGrath, Ian Harvey (12th man).

Capriati struggles through, Safin cruises Melbourne, January 19 The world No 1 struggled with her serve and movement around the court against the big-hitting Greek. Fourth seed Kim Clijsters had no such problems, though, ruthlessly ending wildcard Cindy Watson’s dreams 6-1, 6-2 at Melbourne Park. But American 10th seed Meghann Shaughnessy was dumped out, beaten 2-6, 6-3, 3-6 by unseeded German Marlene Weingartner. In the men’s field, ninth seed Marat Safin advanced with a 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 win over fellow Russian Mikhail
Youzhny. But Safin landed himself in hot water after reacting furiously to being given a code violation after a ball he struck hit a line judge. In-form Roger Federer cruised into the fourth round with a 7-6, 7-6, 6-4 win over German Rainer
Schuettler. Federer has not dropped a set all tournament and is now one of the favourites for the title after winning a lead-up event in Sydney last week. Federer meets German seventh seed Tommy Haas in the fourth round after Haas outlasted American Todd Martin 6-7, 6-3, 3-6, 6-4, 6-1. Chile’s former world No 1 Marcelo Rios reached the fourth round for the first time in four years when he downed Spaniard Alberto Martin 6-4, 6-3, 7-6. Runner-up here in 1998, Rios is unseeded after struggling with injuries last year but completely dominated the first two sets against Martin, who shocked ailing world No 1 Lleyton Hewitt of Australia in the first round. Rios plays Nicolas Lapentti in the next round after the Ecuadorian battled back from two sets down to beat Argentine Gaston Gaudio in a four-hour 11 minutes five-set marathon. Lapentti had looked down and out while trailing by two sets on hot Melbourne day, but mustered all his energy to prevail 4-6, 5-7, 6-4, 6-2, 6-4. Capriati breezed her way through the opening set as Daniilidou took time to find her range. When she did find it, though, she was devastating. Having lost the first set, Daniilidou raced through the second 6-3 with some powerful hitting and serve-volleying. Clijsters’s win could have been even more emphatic — the Belgian’s serve was at times shaky and she committed 24 unforced errors to Watson’s 18. But Clijsters still had plenty in reserve as she brushed aside Australian Watson in a mere 47 minutes on the Vodafone Arena court. Clijsters will face Slovakian Janette Husarova in the fourth round. She would then most likely face compatriot and sixth seed Justine Henin in the quarterfinals. Shaughnessy required courtside treatment for a back complaint during her match. Weingartner will play seventh seed Amelie
Mauresmo, who was too powerful for Thailand’s Tamarine Tanasugarn. The French woman won 7-6, 6-1, while sixth seed Justine Henin accounted for the last surviving Australian Nicole Pratt. Henin won 6-4, 6-0. She next plays Russian Elena
Dementieva. South African veteran Wayne Ferreira staged a remarkable comeback from two sets down and 2-5 in the third set to overcome Ivan Ljubicic 4-6, 4-6, 7-6 (7-3), 6-3, 7-5 in three hours 42 minutes.

Tyson, Lewis set to confirm fight New York, January 19 The pay-per-view bout will be a joint venture of Showtime television, which has a contract with Tyson, and Home Box Office, which has a deal with Lewis. The WBC had warned on Monday that if a deal wasn’t signed by January 22, the fight would go to purse bids. Tyson is the WBC’s No. 1 ranked contender, and the fight will be a mandatory defence for Lewis. Lewis regained the WBC and IBF titles by knocking out Hasim Rahman in the fourth round of their November 16 title rematch. Tyson was supposed to fight Ray Mercer on January 19, but that was cancelled to concentrate on Lewis.

Tyson’s wife files for divorce Rockville (Maryland), January 19 Monica Tyson seeks an unspecified “reasonable sum,” according to divorce papers filed on Thursday in Montgomery County Circuit Court. Mike Tyson countered same day by suing for divorce in Las Vegas, claiming incompatibility, spokesman Scott Miranda said. There was a divorce case filed under the name Michael Tyson in Las Vegas, and it was ordered sealed. “This is a private situation,” the boxer said yesterday in a statement. “It will not be a distraction. I’m 100 per cent focused on knocking out Lennox Lewis.” A press conference was called for Tuesday to announce details of a Tyson-Lewis fight, expected to be in April. Monica Tyson also wants legal custody of their two children — Rayna, 5, and Amir, 4 — and, according to the filing, the fighter has agreed to that. “The defendant committed adultery during the marriage, and such adultery has neither been forgiven nor condoned by the plaintiff,” her filing said. Monica Tyson, a second-year resident in pediatrics at Georgetown University Medical Center, also asked the court to equally distribute their marital property. The divorce complaint said her contribution to the family’s finances has been considerable, while the “defendant’s negative, non-monetary contributions have been substantial.” The boxer met his second wife while he was serving a rape sentence in an Indiana prison. They were married in April 1997, in Bethesda, where Monica Tyson lives with her two children. The boxer previously was married for a year to actress Robin Givens. That marriage ended in divorce in 1989. Shelly Finkel, Tyson’s adviser, was
travelling yesterday and not available for comment. AP |
Harikrishna, Ganguly share lead Nagpur, January 19 Continuing his winning spree, GM Harikrishna defeated IM N.K Mishra (TISCO) in the third round today. In a one-sided game arising from Catalan opening, Harikrishna restricted Mishra from playing a move on c5 and strategically outplayed him. Mishra’s attempt at opening up the game by playing e5 cost him two pawns and the game on the 48th move. IM S.S. Ganguly (IOC) employed an irregular opening with white pieces against Vishal Sareen (LIC). The latter played the opening weakly thereby handing Ganguly a comfortable win. GM K. Sasikiran (ONGC) took his tally to 2.5 points beating overnight leader C.S. Gokhale (Indian Airlines). The two played Nimzo Indian defence game in which Gokhale, playing black, delayed while moving his ‘d’ pawn. With a timely thrust of his pawn to ‘d6’ Sasikiran created tactical chances which favoured him and clinched the victory on the 34th move. In another game, IM V. Koshy (ONGC) playing black against National ‘B’ champion IM Sriram Jha (LIC) employed his favourite modern defence but Jha exploited Koshy’s weaknesses on ‘e6’ and ‘a1-h8’ diagonal winning in just 22 moves. GM Dibyendu Barua (TISCO) also raised his tally to 2.5 points comfortably beating WGM S. Vijaylakshmi (Indian Airlines). Barua, playing black side of the Slav defence, kept Vijaylakshmi busy with threats on the queen side. She ignored castling and paid the price losing on the 30th move. GM Pravin Thipsay (Union Bank) recorded his first win of the tournament employing Sicilian Najdorf defence in reply to International Woman Master Swati Ghate’s (LIC) King Pawn opening. ‘B’minton needs financial back-up’ Chandigarh, January 19 Mr Kalsi has a detailed plan for badminton promotion. A Test series involving India, England, Malaysia, Thailand, and Denmark is on his priority list. “When India organised the preliminary rounds of the Thomas-Uber Cup tie in February 2000 at Delhi, more than Rs 1 crore was spent, he revealed. If an India-UK meet is organised in mixed groups for men and women and competitions are held in four singles, four doubles and one mixed doubles at different places in the country, the total budget would be less than the expenditure incurred on the Thomas-Uber Cup tie. Mr Kalsi said, despite various tournaments, budding youngsters were not coming forward and the major hurdle was the huge expenditure involved. He disclosed at Jalandhar, the District Badminton Association, was able to generate funds. After constructing the hall, they first took permission to rent out shops outside the premises and the monthly rent thus was used for recurring expenditure on the hall. He said this was possible since they had representatives of the Badminton association and the municipal corporation on the managing committee. He said due to the 31st National Games, the hall had been renovated. Last year the north zone badminton meet was organised. Now for the first time in the history of Jalandhar, the Indian senior badminton camp for the forthcoming Thomas-Uber Cup would be beginning on January 20. |
New Arjuna Award scheme soon Kolkata, January 19 Addressing a press conference here, Bharti said: “I think the new Arjuna Award scheme will be highly appreciated by everybody and there will be no complaints anymore.” However, she refused to divulge the details of the scheme, adding that they would be announced at a later stage. Talking about the new initiatives of the Centre, the minister said the government had decided to encourage private sector participation in the field of sports. “As budgetary support was not sufficient to fund every activity, the government has decided to seek the help of private sector.” Bharti said the Sports Department had held discussions with the apex chambers of commerce, CII, FICCI and ASSOCHAM, adding that the response from them was very encouraging. India will not play cricket against Pakistan until Islamabad takes appropriate steps to stop cross-border terrorism. “The government will not allow any cricket match with Pakistan until it takes appropriate measures to wipe out cross-border terrorism,” Bharti said. It was a result of the collective decision of various ministries like Home, Sports and Foreign Affairs, Bharti said. On the relations between the government and the BCCI, she said it was an independent body and the government would protect its autonomy by not interfering in its matters. She said with Jagmohan Dalmiya becoming the BCCI chief, communication gap between the government and the cricket board had reduced to a great extent.

ITI take full points against JCT Bangalore, January 19 Salisu struck five minutes short of the long whistle after his compatriot George Ekeh made a superb run down the right flank and sent a cross across the rival box. Salisu, who was positioned well, tapped in as the ball went in after hitting the inside of the far post. With today’s win, their second in the league, ITI took their points tally to 13 from eight matches to move behind the Vasco and Mohun Bagan, who have 15 points each from eight matches. In a tie that lacked lustre, both the teams played at a slow pace throughout the first half and failed to cheer the crowd, barring a couple of chances before Salisu’s match winner. Nithin Pradhan, who came in for injured striker Kenneth Onu, made some good forays in the beginning and came close to score in the eighth minute but he kicked to ball to the side net from a close range following a flag-kick taken by Mahendra Mani. Salisu could have scored in the 21st minute of the first half, but his measured long-ranger, after beating the JCT custodian, brushed the post before going out. JCT too saw a couple of chances going waste when Ranjeet Singh headed a cross from Hardeep Saini but the horizontal came to ITI’s rescue. Later Saini’s close ranger, following a defence lapse, sailed over the bar. Mahindras win KOCHI: Star-studded Mahindra United, dominating the entire proceedings, notched up a 2-0 win over FC Kochin in a sixth National Football League encounter at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium here tonight. After a barren first half, striker Nigerian Bala Usman scored the first goal through a header off a brilliant free-kick by Jules Alberto Dias in the 46th minute and his striking partner Nigerian Autin Okolo sealed the fate of the match in his team’s favour in the 59th minute. With this match Mahindra United increased their points tally to 15 from eight matches while FC Kochin remained at nine from as many matches. The strong Mumbai outfit could have won the match with a much higher margin had their strikers especially substitute Abhishek Yadav been on target. The lanky Yadav fumbled three consecutive chances in quick succession midway through the second half.
