From QSQT to K3G - an eventful journey
Priyanka Gupta

‘IT takes time to climb the ladder of success.’ This statement fits well with Kiran Deohans, the charismatic, unique and vigorous ad filmmaker and cinematographer.

His recent hit movie Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gum has put him in the limelight as never before. Starting from Mansoor Khan’s QSQT to Rakesh Mehra’s Aks and now Yash Johar’s K3G, it has been a long and eventful journey for him.

Kiran Deohans looks after his own production house ‘Candid Creations’ in Mumbai and planning to make his own feature film by the end of this year. Kiran initiated his career as a cinematographer as an assistant to Nadeem Khan. Simultaneously, he was making ad films. He said, “I used to shoot with Mansoor Khan’s production house that made ad films. When he decided to make QSQT, he asked me to work for him. That was my first break, and it was a wonderful experience working with Aamir and Mansoor. Although I got many offers after QSQT, I opted to continue with ad film under Candid Creations, my own production house, that I had started with my wife Aban.”

After graduation (in BSC) from Ferguson College, Pune, he joined the FTII (Film and Television institute of India). Kiran added, “from the very beginning, I was interested in images and lights. In those days, there was no exposure to foreign cinema, so I grew up on a heavy diet of Hindi films. Though my parents were exasperated but still I used to watch a film everyday. The medium was enchanting. I often watched movies from the projection room. Basically, the work of Subroto Mitra and Gordon Wilbis were the inspirations behind my specialisation in this field. Now I think, it was natural that I chose cinematography.”

Kiran has also shot ‘Krishna,’ the music video for Colonial Cousins, which was awarded the ‘Best Video and Best Direction’ by MTV, Screen and Channel V.

For Kiran, K3G is a film of different moods and locations. He said, “the lighting is the redeeming feature of the movie.

For instance, I created the feeling of cold winter evening at the Raichand House, where Amitji and Jaya are left alone after Shahrukh has left home, to make the place look depressing and make the characters feel alone and lost.” It is the cinematographer who translates the director’s vision on screen through appropriate lighting.

Though both husband and wife are in same field and work together, they never seem to have enough of it. He says, “The only problem is that we even discuss work at home, as we have common friends from advertising or film world. There are no ego clashes between us for we think alike. We run our production house and house together.”

DDCA gears up for ODI
M.S.Unnikrishnan

New Delhi, January 22
The Ferozeshah Kotla ground sports a billiards-top look, though the wicket does not have a blade of grass, as the Delhi and District Cricket Association’s (DDCA) effort seems to be to create a ‘sporting wicket” for the fifth One-Day International match between India and England to be played in the Capital on January 31.

The outfield has been grassed to a nicety and the stadium looks all spruced up. The heavy rush for tickets, though the ticket sales will begin only on January 27, is a clear indication that the match would be a sell out.

The tickets are priced rather high—as the ones on offer for sales are in the Rs 250, Rs 2000 and Rs 7000 price category. Club players will be offered tickets at a concessional rate of Rs 150 each.

As always, the DDCA is saddled with a heavy demand for passes, even beyond the capacity of the stadium.

According to DDCA vice-president C. K. Khanna, who is also the senior vice-president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India, ticket sales will begin either on January 27 or 28. The tickets are likely to be sold through some select branches of the Canara Bank.

As of now, DDCA’s concentration is on preparing a sporting wicket. Prem Chand Sharma, the curator of the ground, said “our aim is to prepare a wicket which will be helpful to both the batsmen as well as the bowlers. It will not be simply a turning track”.

Mr Sharma assured that the wicket will be a “sporting one”, and the ground will be ready for match by January 25.

The last One-Day International match was played at the Ferozeshah Kotla ground in November 1999 when India clashed against New Zealand, with the hosts recording a comprehensive victory.

It was followed by a Test match between India and Zimbabwe in November 2000, and a three-day match between Board President’s XI and Australia in March 2001.

After the one-dayer against England, DDCA will also host a Test match against Zimbabwe in the last week of February.

“We are making all efforts for the smooth and successful conduct of the one-day match”, Mr C. K. Khanna said.

Zakir Husain forged ahead in the fifth minute when Ravinder Mohan Bisht neatly trapped a cross from the left, moved ahead before placing the ball home. Thirty minutes later, Ravinder was once again on the target when he unleashed a powerful shot from about 25 yards, which beat the rival custodian S. Bharat all ends up.

Yoginder scored the third goal of Zakir Husain when he dribbled forward before blasting the ball into the goal, in the 83rd minute.

Shri Ram College of Commerce put up a stiff resistance, and even saved a penalty shot by custodian Pankaj Singh, but could not prevent Jamia Milia from scoring the match winner when striker L. M. Roy beautifully connected a cross from the right flank in the 87th minute of the match.

The final will be played on January 25 (Friday) at 11 am at the Ambedkar Stadium.
