Workshop on healthcare

Ludhiana, January 22
A workshop on “Health care of the elderly people” was organised by Dayanand Medical College and Hospital in collaboration with the World Health Organisation (WHO) and the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare here today.

Over 45 delegates from all over Punjab participated in the workshop. Dr Sandeep Puri, Medical Superintendent, DMCH, said that over 70 million people above the age of 60 years were the ones who needed proper awareness and guidance about their health.

This was the first state-level workshop held at the DMCH and it was basically organised to create awareness among the peripheral workers, Dr Puri said.

The welcome address was delivered by Dr G.Avasthi, Professor and chief of the Medicine Department. Dr A.B. Dey gave introduction and objectives of the programme and discussed the magnitude of the problem. Dr G.S. Wander talked about the cardiovascular disease and a lecture on respiratory system was given by Dr Jagdeep Whig.

Sports festival concludes

In a ding-dong battle, Border Security Force, Jalandhar, prevailed over the Punjab and Sind Bank 4-4 to win the Mata Sahib Kaur Hockey Gold Cup in the 16th annual sports festival, which concluded at Jarkhar village, about 25 km from here yesterday.

The PSB shot into the lead in the 13th minute through Mandeep Singh and seven minutes later BSF restored parity through B K Kallu . In the 22nd minute, BSF, Mandeep scored a superb field goal to put his side ahead again. Rajinder Singh of the PSB equalised in the 32nd minute.

After changing ends, bankmen surged ahead in the 38th minute through Harmeet Singh. In the very next minute B.K. Kallu struck again to level the score 3-3. In the 53rd minute, Charanjeet Singh of the BSF found the target to help his side wrap up the issue 4-3 and lift the coveted cup.

Earlier in the semifinals, PSB outplayed Thapar Academy, Patiala 2-1 and the BSF got the better of SAIL Academy, Delhi 2-1.

In hockey (women), DAV College, Amritsar, defeated Kila Raipur Academy 2-0 to win the Sonu Ghuman Cup.

In kabaddi ( all open), PSEB beat Garondha 27-25 and for the Bibi Surjit Kaur Memorial Kabaddi Silvaer Cup, Tony Club of Kalakh Kalan beat Alankar Tony Club of Kube 27-25

In kabaddi ( one village), Nat beat Ghalota 19-16 and in 62kg category, Nat beat Pamal. In tug of war, PSEB b Burj Dona and in volleyball, Chak Kalan beat Duley.

Balbir Singh Bittu of Jaspal Bangar, a kabaddi player, was honoured with the Harjit Bazkhana award.

Khalsa college win football meet

A second half goal by Roami enabled the Guru Hargobind Khalsa College of Education, Gurusar Sadhar, here, to outplay Panjab University team to win the Panjab University Inter-College (Evening and Education) Football Championship for the third consecutive year.

In a press note issued by the college on Tuesday, in the final match played yesterday, after the first barren half in which Khalsa college captain, Gurpal, exhibited brilliant play and the defenders — Raja Sekhon and Tejinder — too excelled in patches but their moves failed to fetch them the desired results.

In the second half, both teams played better game and the PU team too saw a couple of chances coming their way which they could not translate into a goal. Sandeep headed a cross into the hands of Khalsa college goalkeeper and then Ashutosh’s close kick sailed over the bar.

Principal H.S. Kaile and Dr S.S Sangha congratulated the team.

Cricket meet

Fine batting by Vinod (78) and Babbar (46) helped Royal Club, Khanna, to defeat VCC XI, Ludhiana, by two wickets to enter the quarterfinals of the 6th Rajeev Gandhi and Ist Master Vishav Walia Memorial Cricket Tournament being held at the Daresi ground, here today.

Batting first, VCC XI made 184 runs for the loss of 6 wickets in 22 overs. Dharminder top scored with 40 runs. Shiva and Rinku contributed 34 and 35 runs, respectively.

Royal Cub, Khanna, propelled by Vinod and Babbar, scored the required runs after losing 8 wickets. Eight wickets down, the club needed 6 runs in the last over and required 3 runs off the last delivery of the match which they managed to score and record a thrilling victory.

Brief score: VCC XI 184 for 6 (Dharminder 40 not out, Shiva 34 not out, Rinku 35, Happy 3 for 34 and Rajan 2 for 38)

Royal Club 185 for 8 (Vinod 78, Babbar 46, Happy 22, Sanjeev Panday 3 for 22 and Kamal 2 for 26)

Aditya XI, thanks to a fine all-round display by Akash (50 runs and 4 for 15), scored a convincing 117 runs victory over Star Paradise Club to enter the semifinals.

Aditya XI won the toss and opted to bat first. They made 204 runs after losing 9 wickets in 22 overs. Aditya XI then restricted Star Paradise Club to a modest total of 87 runs all out in 16.5 overs.

Brief scores: Aditya XI 204 for 9 (Akash 50, Rajesh 38, Madan 29, Rakesh 27, Amit 4 for 41 and Soni 3 for 36 )

Star Paradise Club 87 all out (Munish 11 and Akash 4 for 15).

All set for Assembly poll: DC

The Deputy Commissioner and District Electoral Officer, Mr S.K. Sandhu, has said that all arrangements were in place for the smooth conduct of elections in all the 12 assembly constituencies of the district. He maintained that the administration would ensure implementation of the directions of the Election Commission in connection with the model code of conduct.

Mr Sandhu was addressing a joint meeting of the observers, appointed by the Election Commission of India, district and police officials and all the returning officers at Circuit House here last evening to review the arrangements for a fair and free conduct of the assembly elections.

All the seven observers — Mr R.S. Kanade, Mr C. Ashak Vardhan, Mr T.K. Sachin, Mr V. Vibhu Nair, Mr D.P. Singh, Mr Vinodanand Jha and Mr Amitabh Shukla, besides Mr R.L. Kalsia, Commissioner, Municipal Corporation, Mr H.S. Sidhu, SSP, Ludhiana, Mr Ishwar Singh, SSP, Khanna, and Mr Balkar Singh, SSP, Jagraon, attended the meeting.

The Deputy Commissioner, giving details, said that the administration had already directed the printing press owners to abide by the guidelines under the model code of conduct while publishing election material and to submit one copy of all such printed material to the returning officer concerned immediately.

According to Mr Sandhu, there are a total of 19,24,994 voters in the district, out of which 10,31,533 are males. In all, 12,74,683 voters had been provided with photo identity cards so far. In order to conduct a free and fair election, 2,140 polling booths were being set up in the district, where 2,358 presiding officers and 7,058 polling officers had been deputed. As many as 254 polling booths had been identified as very sensitive and 651 as sensitive from the security point of view, where extra security arrangements would be made.

The Deputy Commissioner further said that assistance of the cable TV network had been sought to apprise the people of the functioning of EVMs and to publicise the directions of the model code of conduct in the district.

The SSPs of Ludhiana, Khanna and Jagraon gave the details of the elaborated security arrangements made.

The observer (general), Mr R.B. Kanade, expressed his satisfaction over the arrangements and called upon all the returning officers to perform there duties diligently to hold free and peaceful elections.

Mr D.P. Singh, observer (expenditures), asked the returning officers to thoroughly go through the instructions regarding the expenditure of the candidates and make regular checking of the registers to be maintained by the candidates, as per the directions.
