Chautala to begin campaign tomorrow Chandigarh, January 21 Sources close to the Chief Minister told TNS that Mr Chautala had changed his earlier schedule to be in Yamunanagar for three days from January 23, the last day for filing nominations for the byelection, being held due the death of sitting Congress legislator J.P. Sharma. Mr Chautala, it is learnt, will hold a public meeting in Yamunanagar on January 23, following which Mr Malik Chand Gambhir, the INLD candidate for the Yamunanagar seat, would be taken in procession, led by the Chief Minister, for filing his poll papers. Mr Chautala would be in Yamunanagar on Wednesday and Thursday. He would also spend the whole of Friday morning and afternoon in Yamunanagar. He would come to Fatehabad on Friday evening and spend the night there to take part in Republic Day functions in Fatehabad the next day. During his stay in Yamunanagar — spanning three days and two nights — Mr Chautala would cover the entire
Assembly constituency, the sources said. Earlier, soon after the date for the Yamunanagar byelection was announced, Mr Chautala had made several trips to Yamunanagar which triggered off speculation about the INLD putting up its candidate for the seat which, during the last Assembly elections, was given to the BJP, an alliance partner of the INLD. However, as the BJP started making preparations for the byelection, trips by Mr Chautala to Yamunanagar also came to a halt and hit appeared that the two parties were about to strike a deal on the seat. However, setting speculation at rest, Mr Chautala, while addressing a press conference here yesterday, announced that the INLD would put up its candidate at Yamunanagar. Talking to TNS today about the Yamunanagar impasse, Mr Krishan Pal Gujjar, leader of the BJP in the Assembly, said that he could only hope that good sense would prevail on Mr Chautala and the seat would be left for the BJP. Mr Gujjar, who was singled out by the Chief Minister yesterday for making statements against the government, said Mr Chautala must not disregard the principles of alliance between the two parties. “He has not abided by the principles while running the state government. The least he could do was not ignore these principles for the Assembly seat”, Mr Gujjar said. On the charge by Mr Chautala that he had spoken against the government, despite the BJP being an ally of the INLD, Mr Gujjar said that his criticism was in conformity with the party’s views on various issues. “ We will
continue to criticise the wrong policies of the state government”, Mr Gujjar said. Rejecting Mr Chautala’s allegation that he had voted against the government, Mr Gujjar said that he had never done so. The BJP leader,
while refusing to speak on the future of the BJP-INLD alliance “right now”, claimed that Mr Ratan Lal Kataria, chief of the BJP’s state unit, made several attempts to meet Mr Chautala to talk about the Yamunanagar seat but Mr Chautala kept delaying the meeting under one pretext or the other. Meanwhile, the decision by the INLD to put up its candidate at Yamunanagar has enthused the opposition Congress party. “ We are going to tell people to vote for us if they do not like the state government and we will also tell people to ask the BJP whether it is supporting the INLD or opposing it”, a Congress leader said. |

Main suspect in Joginder case held Panipat, January 21 According to the police, Sandeep, a resident of Gosain Khera village in Jind district, who shot Joginder Kaur, a retired teacher, in broad daylight in the chamber of her counsel at the district courts here on November 26 last year, was arrested along with his two accomplices from near Azizullah Bridge last night after a brief encounter. Sandeep, who along with Surjeet of Ballah in Karnal district, and Dharam Raj of Gamri village in Sonepat district, had come to Panipat from UP on motorcycle, allegedly to eliminate Mr Jain on the directions of Rakesh of Karnal. The trio was promised an amount of Rs 1 crore for the purpose. Rakesh and Mr Jain had a longstanding dispute over some financial matter, it is learnt. According on specific information, a police party cordoned off the area and signalled the motorcycle to stop. However, the suspects did not stop and allegedly fired at the police party which returned the fire. This forced them to abandon the motorcycle and fled towards the fields. The police followed them and arrested them. A revolver and two cartridges were seized from them. A case under Sections 307 and 34, IPC and Sections 25, 54 and 59 of the Arms Act had been registered against them. During interrogation, Sandeep confessed to have shot Joginder Kaur. He also admitted that on the day of the crime, Naveen, who had already been arrested, was with him. He confessed that a few days before the crime, Surjit had informed him and Naveen that Sandeep, alias Sheelu, would give them Rs 4 lakh for killing her. It may be recalled that Kuldip Kalwa, the main suspect in the famous Pritam Ahuja murder case and serving a sentence in Ambala Jail, had claimed at a recent Press conference that he had given the contract of killing Joginder Kaur to Sheelu who in turn gave the contract to Sandeep who had reportedly got an advance of Rs 60,000 from him. It may be recalled that the woman was shot when she tried to plead before the judge that three close relatives of the Speaker should also be included in a case relating to the demolition of her house by over 20 armed persons. |

Hooda’s leadership weak: ex-minister Chandigarh, January 21 In a statement issued here today Mr Krishan Murti alleged that the Chautala government had lost its popularity in a short span of two and a half years because of the deterioration in the law and order situation, imposition of heavy house tax, firing on farmers, installation of “fast” electricity meters and many other acts of commission and omission. He regretted the Congress, which was the main Opposition party in the state, could not put the Chautala government on the mat because of the “weak and directionless leadership” of Mr Bhupinder Singh. He said the “non-performance” of the Central and state governments would have ensured the victory of the Congress candidate in the Yamunanagar Assembly byelection. But Mr Bhupinder Singh’s leadership had put a question mark on the prospects of the Congress nominee. Already the party, he said, had lost all elections it had contested under the leadership of Mr Bhupinder Singh. He appealed to Congressmen in Haryana to “teach a lesson” to those party leaders who were responsible for weakening the party in the past five years. “If loyal and sincere Congressmen remain silent at this juncture, the party cannot come to power in Haryana and the common man in the state will continue to suffer”, he added. |

HVP urges CM to sue Badal Hisar, January 21 Addressing mediapersons here, Mr Surender Singh, a son of former Haryana Chief Minister Bansi Lal and General Secretary of the HVP, said though the Supreme Court had given its judgement in favour of Haryana but Mr Badal had said the Punjab Government would not let even a drop of water out of Punjab. The Punjab Government was a party in the case and Mr Badal had no right to issue such statements. This was a clear case of contempt of the apex court and Mr Chautala should fight against Mr Badal in the court if he was a real well wisher of Haryana, he added. Mr Surender Singh alleged it was surprising that Mr Chautala was not reacting on such statements of his Punjab counterpart. He alleged that instead of taking strict action on this issue, Mr Chautala was asking his party workers to go to Punjab for supporting the Shiromani Akali Dal in the Assembly elections here. He said the interests of Haryana were not safe in the hands of Mr Chautala. He demanded that Mr Chautala should deal the SYL canal issue seriously by setting aside his close relations with the Badal family. He said that all credit on the SYL canal issue should go to Mr Bansi Lal as the petition, on which the Supreme Court had given the historical verdict, was filed during the HVP regime. He claimed that the whole construction work on SYL canal was completed by Mr Bansi Lal. Later, he addressed a youth convention organised by the youth wing of the HVP at Jat Dharamsala here. He asked party workers to go to people and apprise them of the real facts on the SYL canal issue. Mr Kamal Singh and Mr Attar Singh Saini, Mr Ram Swaroop Rana, former ministers, and Ram Kishan, HVP MLA also addressed the convention. |
