P & SB to establish hockey academy
Our Sports Reporter

New Delhi, December 31
Punjab and Sind Bank (P&SB) will establish a Sub-Junior Hockey Academy at Jalandhar with a view to nurture hockey talent at the grass-root level.

Punjab and Sind Bank Chairman and Managing Director N S Gujral announced in the Capital on Monday that the proposed academy would give a big fillip to hockey in the country.

Highlighting the main features of the academy, Mr Gujral hoped that the Sub-Junior Academy would be able to participate in national tournaments since the Bank is already affiliated with the Indian Hockey Federation (IHF).

He said the sub-junior academy will be for boys in the 12 to 15 age group, and the boys will be given intensive training under the guidance of renowned hockey players. He informed that all the expenses of the boys for their boarding, lodging, education and hockey training will be borne by the P&SB.

Mr Gujral said the boys for the sub-junior academy will be selected by a panel comprising former Olympians Ajitpal Singh, Rajinder Singh, Sanjiv Kumar, Gundeep Kumar, Ripudaman Singh and sports secretary of the bank, Charanjit Singh.

He said selection trials would be held at Jalandhar, Faridkot, and Shahbad Markanda (Haryana). P&SB had established its first-ever academy at Jalandhar in 1994 in the 15-18 age group.

And the senior academy of P&SB has already contributed 25 international hockey players, including six Olympians, to the national team.

P&SB’s move to setup another hockey academy in Punjab is a welcome step as Punjab has once again become the nursery of Indian hockey as has been proved by the Junior World Cup team. Ten players of the Junior World Cup winning team at Hobart in Australia belonged to Punjab.

A green and clean scheme for Sonepat
R.D. Sapra

Sonepat, December 31
The district administration has launched a scheme, Tarun Triveni Van Yojna, with a view to bringing about a green revolution and ensuring clean environment in the district.

Mr Ashok Yadav, Additional Deputy Commissioner, told mediapersons here today that the scheme would be implemented in 67 villages of the district in the first phase. Plantation of saplings would be started on a massive scale in these villages. The scheme, he said, would be extended to all the urban and rural areas of the district soon.

All gram panchayats would be asked to plant saplings in two to four acres of the panchayat land identified for the purpose. The people of each village would be asked to donate Rs 101 on each social function they organise for planting saplings on the land. However, those of the weaker sections would be charged between Rs 11 and Rs 51, he said.

The ADC disclosed that a separate account would be maintained in this connection. He appealed to the sarpanches to make available only fertile land for the success of the scheme.

He also appealed to the residents of all the villages to plant one sapling on the land and co-operate with the district administration.

The ADC directed the officials of the Education Department to ensure maximum tree plantation in the schools of urban and rural areas with the help of students and members of the social and voluntary organisations.

He also asked the authorities of the civic bodies and the market committees to plant saplings in the vacant land and cover more area for the purpose.
