Krishi cards distributed

Ludhiana, September 8
The Punjab National Bank, Bija, organised a PNB krishi card distribution camp at Bija, about 30 km from here today. Mr Daya Singh, president, Shiromani Akali Dal (Rural), sarpanches, panches and farmers of the area were present at the function. Mr H.L. Arora, Deputy General Manger, PNB (Punjab Zone), was the chief guest and Mr K.I. Singh, Senior Regional Manager, Ludhiana, presided over the function and distributed the krishi cards worth Rs 92 lakh to the farmers.

In his address, Mr H.L. Arora said the PNB had been awarded the best trophy by the government for issuing maximum number of krishi cards to the farmers in the country. Mr V.K. Sharma, Senior Manger (Development), said all farmers having a minimum irrigated land of one acre were eligible to take loan. Amount of loan limit ranges from Rs 30,000 to Rs 3 lakhs and more.

Art and craft exhibition held

An art and craft exhibition was held at Green Land Senior Secondary Public School, here today. The exhibition was organised as a competition between the four houses of the school — Shakti, Kirti, Jagriti, and Jyoti. Jagriti House was adjudged the best.

The students had displayed beautiful items made by them during the activity period in the school itself. The items included Emboss painting, Chinese painting, Oil painting, Cross stitch painting, Glass painting, Thread painting, Wax models, Fruit baskets, Wall panels with stockings, Artificial nests, Towels and bedsheets with screen printing, Golden tress, Suits with block painting; and Flower trays. Soft toys included those of lion, kangaroo, elephant, Mickey Mouse, tortoise, Santa, rabbits, and different types of teddy bears etc.

The results were as follows: Jagriti House — 1. Painted flower with fabric paint by Richa, (VII), 2. Emboss painting by Parneet ( XII), 3. Oil painting by Shivani and Prabhjot (XI), Cross stitch by Prabhjot (XI Sci.), 5. Emboss painting by Reema (IX). Shakti House — 6. Wall hanging with dry leaves and golden colour by Mausam Virdy (VIII). Jyoti House — 7. Glass painting by Aman Rajput (XII Com.). Kirti house — 8. Metal emboss by Chandni (X).

The chief guest Mr Rajesh Rudhra, Chairman-cum-Director of the school, inaugurated the exhibition and appreciated the efforts of the students.

Principals join teachers in relay fast

Ludhiana, September 8
The Association of Principals of Non-government Colleges of Panjab University has decided to join the ongoing relay fast of the Punjab and Chandigarh College Teachers’ Union in support of the demand of implementation of the already accepted demands of pension-cum-gratuity scheme, release of arrears and UGC scales to principals and teachers.

Stating this in a press note, Mr Tarsem Bahia, president of the association and Principal of AS College at Khanna, said that all principals would join the relay fast with the college teachers outside Mini-Secretariat tomorrow. He said due to “non-cooperation” from the government, academic work was being affected in colleges.

Meanwhile, the association has condemned the suspension of Mr V.K. Mehta, Principal, Arya College. The principals said that Mr Mehta was being made a victim of the fight between two groups of the management. They have urged the management to stop victimisation and restore normalcy in the working of the college.

Seminar on education

Doraha, September 8
A seminar on “Challenges in present education system and ways to combat them” was organised at Guru Nanak National College, here, yesterday. Mr Harbhajan Singh Deol, Professor of National Integration Chair, Punjabi University and member of the PPSC, said: ‘‘The future of education in India is dark as the educational leadership is passing into non-educational, political hands and when the decision-making process becomes their responsibility, wrong and centralised decisions are taken.’’

Mr Balwant Singh Pangali, secretary, college management committee, Prof Kuldip Singh, president of the PCCTU, Ludhiana district, Prof Jagdev Singh Grewal, Head of the Punjabi Department, and Principal Jaswant Singh Gill also expressed their views on the deteriorating standards of education.
