Chandigarh Football Association in
search of a home
Abhijit Chatterjee
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, August 31
It has been over a year since the Chandigarh Football Association (CFA) has been granted regular status by the All-India Football Federation (AIFF). This status not only gives the association the right to vote at general body meetings of the federation, but also entitles it to various grants doled out by the national body from time to time.

But the local body is still trying to find a permanent home for itself. In the absence of a permanent home the game of football cannot flourish in the Union Territory even as the Chandigarh Administration spends lakhs of rupees on the football academy being run at the Sector 42 Sports Complex.

It was in November, 1996, that the CFA was granted associate membership by the AIFF after a relentless struggle. Earlier, the CFA was a part of the Haryana Football Association and a large number of players from the Union Territory turned out for Haryana in the various national-level tournaments. Since getting associate memberships status, Chandigarh has won the under-21 North Zone Football Championship in 1997-98 and also qualified for the quarterfinals of the National Football Championship for the Santosh Trophy in 1998-99.

Senior functionaries of the CFA are running from pillar to post to see whether they can get the Sector 17 Football Stadium (the only regular football venue in the Union territory) on a long-term lease on the same terms and conditions the Chandigarh Lawn Tennis Association has got the Sector 10 Tennis Stadium on a long-term lease.

Not that the Sector 17 Football stadium has great facilities. The small stand has two changing rooms, one of which is currently under the occupation of the ground chowkidar, while the other room is used as a store room by the football coach of the Sports Department.

The small gymnasium is in bad shape and it is seldom that any player uses it. CFA officials say that the association has to pay Rs 150 per day everytime they have to conduct their tournaments at the stadium. And now that women’s football has also come under the wings of the CFA following a direction from the AIFF the number of tournaments have gone up substantially.

On an average the CFA books the Sector 17 Football Stadium for about 100 days a year to conduct various tournaments. Besides these tournaments various camps are also conducted by the association before fielding teams in national-level tournaments. These camps are generally of 15 days’ duration, and to conduct these the association has to seek special permission of the Chandigarh Sports Department.

The CFA officials also have a number of other complaints to air. They point out that while the UT Cricket Association, which does not even have direct affiliation with the Board of Control for Cricket in India, have been allotted not only a room at the Sector 16 Cricket Stadium but are also given an annual grant to conduct their activities, the CFA in spite of having direct affiliation with the AIFF is not given any grant either to conduct its tournaments or to kit its various teams which represent Chandigarh in national championships.

The CFA officials say that once the association is able to find a permanent place for itself, it will have no difficulty to furnish the office with all necessary equipment like fax, computers and telephone since the AIFF has a policy to help its affiliated units to equip their offices.

The CFA officials also say that in case the Chandigarh Administration is unable to give the Sector 17 Football Stadium on lease, they can consider giving the Sector 46 stadium which originally was designed to be a football stadium but subsequently converted to a multi-purpose stadium.
