No solution to silt problem Mandi, August 29 Private members expressed dissatisfaction over the latest proposal placed before the meeting that a new machine would be pressed into service to remove the silt from the Suketi Khud. Members said the quantity of silt was so huge that it was not feasible to remove the silt within two months as claimed by the BSL engineers. Members rejected the proposal and pressed for a lasting solution. They lamented that the BBMB which was earning huge income from the project had been evading the solution to the silt problem for over past 24 years. It may be pointed out here that the National Engineering Research Institute of Nagpur which had been assigned by the BBMB the task to suggest a lasting solution to the silt problem has submitted its final report in which a 14-point solution has been recommended. It has categorically stated that the lasting solution to the problem is the construction of a tunnel to throw out the silt into the Sutlej. Thakur Gulab Singh said the government shared the concern of people over the problem of silting and was vigorously pursuing the matter with the Center as well as the BBMB. He said the government had drawn up a plan to solve the menace of stray cattle under which three “Gosadans” were being set up at Mandi, Jogindernagar and Sundernagar where the stray cattle would be given shelter. |

Kulu-Manali airstrip to be extended Kulu, August 29 Later talking to reporter he said the proposed extension would enable bigger aircraft to land at Bhuntar which would boost tourism in Himachal. Airport Authority sources said that the proposed extension of the airstrip was under examination. A team from the Roorki University had submitted a report for the diversion of the Beas river. Now an expert committee has been formed to analyse the possibilities of reducing the estimated cost, assessed by the Roorki University survey team. Official sources of the National Airport Authority confirmed that no funds had been allocated so far for extension work. It was also learnt that even the tenders were not floated. It may be recalled that Mr Sharad Yadav, Union Civil Aviation Minister had announced during his visit to Kulu-Manali that the airstrip would be extended if the Himachal government acquired the requisite land for the purpose. Though the cash-strapped state could not acquire the land due to the lack of funds, yet Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee had assured the state of necessary grants for the acquisition of the land for the diversion of the river. Meanwhile the Senior Aerodrome Officer at Bhuntar told this correspondent that the plans for the Terminal Building and the car parking had been finalised and the land acquired. The work for these would start shortly. Contrary to Airport Authority of India’s officials, the Chief Minister of Himachal earlier had announced that funds for the extension of Kulu-Manali airport has been released by the Ministry of Civil Aviation, Government of India. |

Pollution board’s move resented Kulu, August 29 Mr Ajay V. Prasad, Deputy Commissioner, said the administration would take strict action against the owners of the erring industrial units. One of the industrialists who were issued the notices, alleged that the authorities were selective in issuing notices. He alleged that the authorities were misusing their powers in this regard. Mr Arun Sharma, a hotelier, expressed surprise at the fact that a supplier of the sewerage treatment plant (STP) knew which particular company or hotel was going to receive a notice from the board. He said the manufacturers reached them before they received the notice and they had no option than to place an order for the STP, though it was unreasonably priced. The hotelier alleged that the authorities never tried to suggest corrective measures to them. Another industrialist said the state Pollution Control Board was the most unfriendly department which created hassles instead of suggesting environment-friendly measures. Mr Sharma suggested that the department should organise seminars and workshops for industrialists and hoteliers. Awareness campaigns at the Panchayat level and through schools should be added to the programmes of pollution control board, besides giving demonstrations and practical suggestions to the industrialists, he said. |

Village plagued with water, power shortages Pragpur (Kangra), August 29 Water supply to the village has been restricted to only half an hour daily in the morning. Harried residents have no option but to trudge long distances even during the peak rainy season to fetch water for themselves and their livestock. When asked, an officer in the department concerned said efforts to augment the water supply were on. Power supply to this area is also inadequate coupled with frequent cuts, low voltage and recurring fluctuations. At times the supply is so poor that even radios, refrigerators, water coolers and other electricity-operated gadgets do no function. The worst-affected are the students who find it hard to cope with inadequate power supply, especially during their exams. They have to make do with candles and lamps.
Many assurances given by the departments concerned have not produced any concrete results. |
