In a surprise move, Punjab Agricultural University has abolished the controversial post of Pro Vice-Chancellor. The decision was taken at a meeting of its Board of Management at Chandigarh yesterday.

Gang of car thieves busted, 6 held
Ludhiana, July 31
The local police today claimed to have busted a gang of car thieves who were responsible for many car thefts in the city during the past few months. The police arrested six persons and recovered five cars from them.

Improvement Trust chief summoned to court
Ludhiana, July 31
Mr Madan Mohan Vyas, chairman, Improvement Trust, Ludhiana, and five others have been summoned to appear in court in person on September 26 to face trial for causing hurt to Mr Mahesh Kumar, criminally intimidating him and trespassing property.

Police orders confiscation of licensed weapons

The Sadar police today ordered confiscation of all the licensed weapons of Lalton Kalan village in the wake of alleged use of firearms in personal rivalry and village groupism instead of ‘self-defence’ from anti-social elements.

Conman dodges Mumbai Police
Ludhiana, July 31
A team of Mumbai Police led by a Sub-Inspector which had been camping in the city for the past five days in order to arrest a master conman had to return empty-headed as the accused managed to escape once again.

40 tonnes of ammunition seized
Ludhiana, July 31
About 40 tonnes of explosive material has been recovered from the steel scrap from the Dhandari Kalan Dry Port area during the past five days’ search operations. The quantum of explosives found has unnerved the district authorities as it could have led to a disaster had anything gone wrong anywhere. The explosive material had been lying at the dry port for the past eight years.

SAD — SHSAD row over foundation stone
Ludhiana, July 31
The removal of the foundation stone for a Rs 133-crore sewerage project in Simla Puri locality in Ward No 31 here on Saturday has snowballed into a major contentious issue between the ruling SAD (B) and the Sarb Hind Shiromani Akali Dal. Upset and agitated over total inaction by the district administration and the police, the SHSAD legislator from Dakha, Mr Bikramjit Singh Khalsa, today threatened to resort to a mass agitation, including a dharna at the Mini Secretariat, over the issue.

Did Ludhiana BJP boycott Gupta’s visit?
Ludhiana, July 31
Did local BJP leaders boycott the visit of Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation Chaman Lal Gupta to Ludhiana on Sunday? The question assumes significance given the fact that none of the local BJP leaders was seen when the minister was around. Local BJP leaders and workers are reportedly irked over the visit of Mr Gupta to Ludhiana, as they were not informed.

Martyr cremated with full honours
Doraha, July 31
The mortal remains of Major Singh of 4 Sikh Light Infantry Regiment, who laid down his life while fighting terrorists at Para Barmulla in Srinagar on July 28, were consigned to the flames with full honours at his native village, Lapran, near here, today. He is survived by his father, three brothers and an unmarried sister.

‘Shardhanjali Samaroh’ for Udham Singh

To commemorate the martyrdom day of Udham Singh, a ‘shardhanjali samaroh’ was organised at his memorial in Roza Sharif here today. Mr Vikas Partap, Deputy Commissioner, presided over the function.

Inquiry begins into torture case
Ludhiana, July 31
The Jagraon police today started a high-level inquiry into the alleged torture of a youth of Ghungrana village by the Dehlon police in the wake of the discovery of a treasure from a village haveli amidst reports that officials of the Dehlon police had launched the operation cover up in the case.

3 hurt in dispute over control of dera 
Jagraon, July 31
Three persons, including a woman, were seriously injured in a fight among the members of two families over the control of Cheenta Wala Dera. Ms Sadhna Kapoor accused Narinder Beri of Ludhiana and two of his sons, along with Kali Charan, for causing injuries to her and her husband, Mr Amit Kapoor, in an attempt to stop them from distributing prasad to the devotees.

EDUCATION

Re-demarcation of varsities’ jurisdiction delayed
Ludhiana, July 31
The re-demarcation of the jurisdiction of three universities of the region, namely Panjab University, Punjabi University and Guru Nanak Dev University, has been delayed and it may now be done from the next academic year. The change in the jurisdiction of these universities is not possible now as the academic sessions for the year 2001-2002 have already been started by the universities. The mid-session transfer of areas is not possible according to Dr S.P. Singh, Vice- Chancellor, Guru Nanak Dev University.

ETT teachers end fast

The Government Primary Teachers’ Association has hailed the decision of Mr Parkash Singh Badal, Chief Minister, Punjab, to accept the demands of unemployed youth having Elementary Teachers’ Training.

PCCTU to meet Women Commissioner
Ludhiana, July 31
To discuss the case of alleged intimidation and exploitation of women lecturers by Ms Madhu Prashar, Principal, Dev Samaj College, Ferozepore, Prof K.B.S. Sodhi, Punjab and Chandigarh College Teachers’ Union, will meet the Punjab State Women Commissioner at Chandigarh on August 9.

In a meeting held here on Sunday under the chairmanship of Mr Kawarjit Singh Sandhu, SP (D) and president of District Basketball Association, various committees were formed and duties were assigned with an aim to make Punjab State Basketball Championship a success. The championship will be inaugurated on August 2, by Mr R. S. Gill, IG (zonal), and will conclude on August 5.
