Two wins for GNPS team

Ludhiana, July 31
Guru Nanak Public School scored two easy victories on the opening day of the second Ludhiana District Open Youth Basketball Championship for boys and girls at the indoor stadium of Guru Nanak Sports Complex on Monday.

In the first match, Guru Nanak Public School outplayed Green Land Model Senior Secondary School, 37-12, and in the second encounter they defeated GGN Public School, 42-20. Sumer Singh scored 14 and 18 points, respectively, in the two games.

Earlier, in the inaugural match of the championship, Guru Nanak International School defeated Tagore Public School, 23-12. Sandeep and Simarjeet scored eight points each for the winners while Karamvir scored seven points for the losers.

In another match of boys’ section, GGN Public School defeated CFC Public School, 37-23. The winners were trailing, 9-11, at the breather. Talwinder Singh of GGN Public School with 34 points was at the centre stage. For the losers, Sahil netted 10 baskets.

In the girls’ section, Khalsa School Club overpowered Guru Nanak High School, 25-13. For Khalsa School Manju excelled with 14 points while Rajni with 10 points played well for the losers.

Football league

The Ludhiana District Football League organised by the Football Promotion Council will be conducted here at the Football Stadium of the Police Lines from August 5 to 15. Entries may be sent to Mr William Bansilall Mattoo, secretary of the council, or he may be contacted at Phone No 471839 by August 2.

Panels formed to conduct sports meet

Mandi Gobindgarh, July 31
In a meeting held here on Sunday under the chairmanship of Mr Kawarjit Singh Sandhu, SP (D) and president of District Basketball Association, various committees were formed and duties were assigned with an aim to make Punjab State Basketball Championship a success. The championship will be inaugurated on August 2, by Mr R. S. Gill, IG (zonal), and will conclude on August 5.

The meet will be held at the Municipal Council stadium and the playgrounds of Om Parkash Bansal Public School. Mr Sandhu said one more meeting would be held at the Municipal Council hall here on August 1 to assess the preparations made by the tournament conducting committee, and boarding and technical committees. He added that a cultural programme would also be organised at the inaugural and concluding ceremonies of the tournament.

Law & order situation assessed

Fatehgarh Sahib, July 31
The district administration held a meeting of senior civil, police officials and prominent citizens of the district, to take stock of situation in view of the rise in theft and murder cases.

Addressing the meeting jointly the Deputy Commissioner, Mr Vikas Paratap and the SSP, Mr H.S. Saran, expressed concern over sudden increase in the cases of crime by some gangs migrant criminals. However, they assured that the district administration was making all out efforts to nab these criminals. They said the day and night patrolling had been intensified and additional force had been deployed for this purpose. Special “nakas” had been erected and strict vigil was being kept throughout.

They urged the police not to get panicky and co-operate with the police. They also urged the public to give all information about their tenants and suspicious persons immediately to the nearest police station. They also directed the factory owners to send details and photographs of their employees to the police station. They have also urged the residents to form a mohalla committees and to undertake “thikri pehras” in their respective areas.

People present on the occasion also raised various issues relating to the functioning of the police force and demanded that instead of employing constables in traffic police, they should be assigned the duty of night patrolling. They demanded that more employees should be posted at Sirhind chowki and a telephone should be installed there immediately, so that the people could give the information at the earliest. The also assured full cooperation to the administration.

Mr Balwant Singh Sahpur, MLA, Mr Inderjit Singh Randhawa SP (H), Mr Amarbir Singh Sidhu GA to the Deputy Commissioner, Didar Singh Bhatti, senior Akali leader, Mr Jagmeet Singh Sahota, State president of Anti-Terrorist Front Mr R.N. Sharma, president Citizens Welfare Council, Sirhind, also addressed the meeting.
