An 11- year-old girl was married to a 25- year-old man by her parents at their Naagla Basti residence in Mani Majra even as the police party which rushed there to stop this illegal wedding allegedly let the nikaah be read.

BSNL leaves consumers high and dry
Chandigarh, July 25
The BSNL has disconnected as many as 9000 telephones and made 6,000 of them only in-coming for non-payment of bills. However, Department of Posts had termed the bill delivery procedure of the telecom company faulty resulting in inconvenience to the consumers.

58 Income Tax Dept officials  transferred
Chandigarh, July 25
In a large-scale middle-level reshuffle, the Income Tax Department has transferred 58 officials of the rank of additional and joint commissioners in the North Western Region (NWR). Those transferred include six officials of the Chandigarh circle.

Ordeal for owners of 8-seaters

Thanks to typically bureaucratic red tape, thousands of city residents who own eight-seater vehicles are facing harassment. Each year they are required to get their vehicles inspected and passed by the Motor Vehicle Inspector for fitness and road worthiness.

Kohli, that they have in their executive meeting held today unanimously decided to field the SAD councillor, Mr Mohinder Singh, who is presently occupying the post of Deputy Mayor, for the post of Mayor.

Factory fire: police on the lookout for owner

It was a chance discovery by the UT police. A fire that broke out in a factory in Industrial Area Phase I late last night, later revealed that the factory was actually an illicit liquor manufacturing and bottling plant.

Choked manholes bane of residents

Visitors to Arya Samaj temple in Sector 7-C and hundreds of residents living around the temple are being forced to live in stench emanating from the blocked manholes for the past seven months. The temple also houses an old age home and dispensary. Five person including two police personnel and two women, were injured in a clash between the police and residents of Raipur Khurd village, who blocked the Chandigarh-Ambala highway at the Airport chowk for over 30 minutes on Tuesday night.

Chemical sterilisation of stray dogs proposed
Chandigarh, July 25
The Municipal Corporation of Chandigarh is considering a proposal for the chemical sterilisation of stray dogs in the city. This follows a detailed note sent by Prof N.R. Kalla of the Department of Biophysics, Panjab University, wherein he has claimed that single oral dose of cadmium fluoride can permanently sterilise the dogs and has offered the same to MC for consideration.

Telecom services were hit here today following the one-day token strike of telecom employees against the “anti-employee” and “anti-public” policies of the Central Government. The call for the strike was given by the Confederation of Central Government Employees and Workers, New Delhi.

For this 22-year-old girl from Ladakh, life has undergone a pleasant change. Sarmalo can now lead a normal life thanks to a rare surgery performed by Dr Vikas Mehra, an orthopaedic and spinal surgeon from the Chandigarh Medical Center.

Trials for CFA trainees

Trials for selection of six more boys for the Chandigarh Football Academy (CFA), were conducted at Sports Complex, Sector 7, this morning and at Sports Complex, Sector 42, this evening. The participants, who had come from Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and Chandigarh, were put to various physical tests.

Modernisation of PCR on cards
SAS Nagar, July 25
Modernisation of the Police Control Room (PCR) in the town is on the cards. The DIG, Ludhiana Range, Mr Suresh Arora, said effort was being made to start patrolling in the town on the pattern of the Chandigarh police. An incharge of the PCR would be directly supervising the PCR patrols.
