City to host carrom tournament
Our Sports Reporter

Chandigarh, June 29
Chandigarh has taken the initiative to host the carrom event of the 47th edition of the National School Games to be held later this year. The event will be organised by UT Education department. This was decided in the two-day annual general meeting of the School Games Federation of India which was held at Panjab Bhawan, Delhi, and concluded yesterday.

According to SGFI sources, other major decisions taken during the marathon meeting included preparation for the golden jubilee celebrations of the SGFI in the year 2002. It was decided to divide 24 sport disciplines having all age groups among four states with each conducting six disciplines. The states which have shown keen interest to host this mega event were Punjab, Delhi, Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh. The member representatives of these states have been asked to get formal request from their respective education department so as to proceed further. The exact dates will be discussed in the next year’s meeting of the SGFI.

In another important decision the House approved the name of its present president Mr C.L. Negi for the life time member of the federation in recognition of his distinguished services to the school sports. Mr Negi was continuing as president of SGFI for more than three decades. He will also enjoy voting rights in the event of elections of the SGFI.

It may be recalled that Mr Negi and Mr P.S. Chhabra were elected as president and secretary of the SGFI in February 1999. However a court case was moved by the then secretary General, Mr B.D. Gandhi, in the district courts, Chandigarh, which last month declared the elections as null and void. However, the present body moved the Punjab and Haryana High Court and took the stay orders for which next hearing will be on July 10.

Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, June 29
The enforcement wing of the Municipal Corporation today demolished around 75 temporary jhuggis in Mani Majra auto market area, adjoining the ‘nullah’ dividing Chandigarh and Panchkula, as these were on MC land.

The employees also lifted 10 to 12 chassis of vehicles, which were lying dumped in the parking area of the auto market. The welding sets and other equipment were picked up by the mechanics following a warning.

The drive was conducted by three inspectors and five sub-inspectors of the enforcement wing with the help of a JCB and three trucks. There was hardly any resistance, since the jhuggi-dwellers had been warned about the drive last night.

The efforts of the gurdwara management to reconstruct the boundary wall around the gurdwara in Sector 49 were once again dashed as the enforcement wing of the Estate Office demolished whatever they had constructed. The staff instructed them to remove the ‘malba’ by tomorrow evening.
