PAU fires employee for embezzlement
Report indicts two others

Close on the heels of the chargesheeting of seven employees in a case of irregularity of funds, Punjab Agricultural University today terminated an employee of the Estate Office and ordered recovery of the alleged embezzled money from two others for forging documents and making bogus entries to the tune of Rs 7 lakh.

Panic grips villagers after dacoity

PSEB to release temporary tubewell connections
Samrala, June 21
The Punjab State Electricity Board has decided to release temporary tubewell connections for paddy season, keeping in view the demand of farmers. According to the XEN Mr R.P.S. Randhawa, of Samrala division as per the policy of the board, connections would be valid up to October 15 and these would be given to those consumers who have already availed this facility during the last year.

Two held for drug trafficking
Ludhiana, June 21
The city police today claimed to have busted a gang of drug traffickers who used to smuggle poppy husk from parts of Rajasthan into the city by using red lights over their car in order to evade checking at several barriers enroute.

Literacy drive fails to live up to expectations
Ludhiana, June 21
The literacy campaign which took off with a great deal of enthusiasm — thanks to the district authorities and the elected body of volunteers — has a massive budget of Rs 1.71 crore. It was funded by the Human Resource Ministry and the first instalment of Rs 85.6 lakh was given to the Ludhiana Sakharta Samiti through the aegis of the National Literacy Mission in 1995.

The Vice-Chancellor of Punjab Agricultural University said today that he had not stopped the scientists of the university to speak on the matters related to the academics but he had asked them not to criticise the functioning of the university, which was a seat of education.

Not many takers for home science course

There is heavy rush of candidates seeking admission in bachelors course in veterinary science and B.Sc. (agriculture) offered by Punjab Agricultural University. The university has received 1962 applications for both these courses against 70 seats. The entrance test for these courses will be conducted on June 26.

Fall in occupancy rate at ESI Hospital

According to rough estimates, there are over seven lakh industrial workers in the city. In stark contrast to this, the occupancy rate at the local ESI Hospital, meant for industrial workers, is not more than 55 per cent.

The 270-bedded new hospital building of ESI, which was completed in 1997, is still waiting to be ‘formally’ handed over to the ESI Corporation. The building, which cost more than Rs 15 crore, is to be handed over by the Punjab State Industrial Export Corporation to the ESI Corporation.Top
