AMLOH

BARNALA
ASSUMES CHARGE: Mr S.S. Gupta took over as Additional District and Sessions Judge here on Monday. While Mr S.R. Sachdeva, who has also been posted as another Additional District and Sessions Judge here, is likely to assume office in a day or so.

CHEQUES PRESENTED: Mr Gobind Singh Longowal, Punjab Minister of State for Irrigation, presented cheques for Rs 11.5 lakh to Municipal Council, Government Girls Senior Secondary School and Senior Secondary School (Boys), Dhanaula, at a function held at Gurdwara Ramsar, Dhanaula, about 10 km from here, on Sunday.

INSTALLED: Dr Sanjiv Kalia and Dr Gaurav Grover were installed as president and secretary, respectively, of Lions Club Harmony, Barnala, at a function held at Gobind Bansal Charitable Complex on Saturday. Lion D.K. Sood, District Governor (Elect), Lions 321 F Club, was the chief guest.

BATHINDA
ARRESTED: Asha Rani, a senior clerk in the Employment Office, Talwandi Sabo, was arrested on Monday while taking a bribe of Rs 200 from Mr Sarbjit Singh for renewing his employment card. This was stated in a press note issued here on Monday by Mr Khushi Mohmmad, DSP, Vigilance Bureau.

DIED: A person admitted to the local Civil Hospital by the volunteers of the Sahara Jan Sewa died at the hospital on Monday. His body was later cremated by the volunteers. This was stated by Mr Vijay Goyal, president, Sahara Jan Sewa, in a press note issued here on Monday.

CONDEMNED: Mr Ram Lal, district president, Nepali Jan Sampark Samiti, in a press note issued here on Monday condemned the massacre of the Nepal King and his family. He said the King was a fatherly figure in Nepal and his death had caused a huge loss to the country.

JALANDHAR
CYCLIST KILLED: Mohammad Ishad (28) of Immamnasar locality, who got injured in an accident on Saturday died at the local Civil Hospital on Sunday. According to the police, the deceased was going to his home on a bicycle when a Maruti car hit him causing serious injuries to him.

KHAMANO
GIRL KILLED: A 20-year-old girl was killed and 11 were injured in a mishap at Doraha on Sunday. According to information, a Maruti van rammed into a tree on the GT road near Doraha. The victims were on the way to Delhi from Vaishno Devi. The injured have been admitted to Sidhu Hospital Doraha and identified as Pooja, Sonu, Vijay and Jagat.

SCHOOL RENAMED: Government Senior Secondary School at Bilaspur village has been renamed as Shaheed Sipoy Gurdial Singh Senior Secondary School. Shaheed Gurdial Singh had sacrificed his life in the Indo-Pak war of 1965. Mr Jagdish Singh Garcha, Technical Education Minister, was the chief guest at the function held on Sunday.

PROTECTION SOUGHT: A resident of Ward 4, Mr Surjit Singh, has alleged that the SP (D) insulted him and his wife in connection with a fraud case. He urged the DGP, the Chief Minister, and the PHRC, Chandigarh, to provide protection to his family members because the officer concerned allegedly shielded the accused, Balwant of Thikriwal village who had cheated him.

LUDHIANA
ANNUAL SAMAGAM: The fifth annual function in connection with the birthday celebrations of Bhai Mohkam Singh would be held at Chamkaur Sahib on June 10, according to Mr Avtar Singh Kamboj, secretary of Shromani Bhagat Baba Namdev International Society. In a press note issued here on Monday, Mr Kamboj said all preparations for the function had been made and Sant Amrik Singh ji Panj Bhainian would lay the foundation stone of a memorial dedicated to Bhai Mohkam Singh.

RESIDENTS STAGE DHARNA: Residents of Bhaura, near Jalandhar bypass, staged a dharna in front of the Indian Bank’s branch in protest against not opening of the saving accounts of residents of the area. The two-hour protest came to an end when the Assistant Branch Manager, Mr G.D. Badhan, agreed to open the accounts.

MALERKOTLA
SCHOOLS UPGRADED: The Punjab Government has upgraded 34 primary schools, 24 middle schools and 21 high schools of the Sangrur district.

MANDI GOBINDGARH
MEETING: A meeting of the District Youth Congress workers will be organised at Mandi Gobindgarh on Wednesday to discuss the ‘faulty policies’ of the Central and state governments pertaining to farmers, industries and unemployment, Mr Harinder Singh Bhambri, president, District Youth Congress, Fatehgarh Sahib, said here on Monday. He said, Mr Krishan Bir Molina, national general secretary of the Youth Congress and in charge Punjab youth affairs, would address the gathering.

FLAYED: A former minister in the Congress government, Mr Sadhu Singh Dharamsot, held a meeting of Youth Congress workers here on Monday. While addressing the meeting at Sant Nagar, he alleged that the present government had brought stagnation in the development projects undertaken by the late Beant Singh government.

PATHANKOT
KILLED: A three-year-old boy, Lucky, of Mamon village here was crushed to death by a tractor on Sunday.

PATIALA
DEMAND: The President of the Ayurvedic Students Association, Dr Moninder Singh, said the lowering of percentage in PMET for admission to BAMS course will undermine the status of the subject of ayurveda. Stating this, Dr Moninder Singh said the percentage has been reduced to 30 per cent for general category and 20 per cent for reserved category. He added that while the percentage of admission to MBBS and BDS courses remained constant at 50 per cent and 40 per cent. Dr Moninder Singh has requested the government to reconsider its decision and help in the upliftment of the subject rather than further degrading it.

APPOINTED: Mr Bhat Singh has been appointed as the new Principal of the B.N. Khalsa Senior Secondary School. Mr Karam Singh, former Principal, was given a warm farewell.

LAUNCHED: A consultancy service in the field of education, immigration and visa services was launched in a big way here on Monday. Senior Akali leader Surjit Singh Rakhra inaugurated the branch office at the Surya Complex. Prominent among those present on the occasion were Mr Jodh Singh, former Dean (Academics), Punjabi University, BJP executive member Rulda Singh and other prominent residents of the city. The consultancy services will offer assistance in marketing, computer studies, graphic designing and an assortment of allied services.

PHAGAWARA
SCHOOL RECRUITMENTS: The Punjab Education Minister, Mr Tota Singh while talking to newsmen at the local Guru Nanak College on Saturday said a staff of 2000 persons would be recruited in schools. The posts included those of Principals, Lecturers and Master cadre. In all, three thousand posts were to be fulfilled, he said.

INFANT FOUND: An infant was found abandoned near a sewer hole at Hadiabad here on Sunday. The infant is a boy and two or three-day old.

MURDERED: Manjit Singh of the local Daddal mohalla was murdered with sharp-edged weapons near the Nimmawala chowk on Sunday, according to Mr Harbhajan Swaroop, SHO, City Police Station, here on Monday. A case has been registered against five persons — Pankaj, Suraj, Shama Pehalwan, Sabhi and another person.

PHILLAUR
NEPALIS HELD: The Goraya police arrested two Nepalis — Jai Bahadur Singh and Vijay Bahadur Singh— and seized two .32-bore revolvers and 10 live cartridges from them.

INAUGURATED: The Punjab Chief Minister, Mr Parkash Singh Badal, inaugurated a tubewell at Guru Ravidass Pura here and laid the foundation stone of 50-bedded hospital building of Civil Hospital, Phillaur, on Sunday.

REVENUE OFFICERS: The police has to now consult Deputy Commissioner, district revenue officer or revenue officer concerned before registering any case against any revenue officer on any complaint against him. The Punjab Revenue Officers Association president, Mr Iqbal Singh Sandhu, has told mediapersons that an official letter from the Home Ministry has been sent to all Deputy Superintendents of police.

ROPAR
PAYMENTS: The Deputy Commissioner, Mr G.S. Grewal, has directed the authorities of the Morinda sugar mill to make payments to farmers of the area by the end of June. The orders were passed on complaints made by the farmers of the area at the ‘sangat darshan’ held on Friday.

SAHNEWAL
WOMAN KILLED: A woman was killed and two were injured in an accident which occurred on the GT road near here. According to information, Khuspal Singh was driving his scooter. His wife, Sapinder Kaur, and sister-in-law, Paramjit Kaur were pillion riders. As they reached Nandpurm, a vehicle hit the scooter from the back injuring them. In the mishap a cyclist, Kulwant Singh, was also injured. While Paramjit Kaur succumbed to her injuries, the condition of Sapinder Kaur is serious. A case has been registered.

PO HELD: A proclaimed offender has been arrested by the Sahnewal police. It is learnt that Bakshi Ram a son of Sadhu Singh, was earlier arrested under Sections 61, 1 and 14 of the Excise Act. The case was registered on July 21, 1996 and he was released on bail. After this he was declared proclaimed offender on January 11, 2001. He is a resident of Nawanshahr.

SAMRALA
LAWYERS HOLD STRIKE: Lawyers of the local Bar Association observed full day strike here on Monday, according to Mr M.C. Prasher, vice-president of the Bar. The call for the strike was given by the District Ludhiana Bar Association.

CHILD INJURED: A seven-year-old child Harman Singh was injured in a road mishap here on Monday. He was hit by a Punjab Roadways bus. The child has been admitted to the local Civil Hospital where he was referred to Ludhiana.

ARHTIYAS’ STRIKE: Commission agents (arhtiyas) observed full day strike here on Monday in protest against the non-payment of money by sheller owner.

SANGRUR
OPEN HOUSE SESSION: An open house session was organised by the local office of the General Manager (Telecom) on Thursday. It was organised to discuss problems, being faced by telephone subscribers and steps to improve the telecom services. Mr G.S. Gill, General Manager (Telecom), Sangrur, said Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) would provide 29,000 new telephone connections in the district.

TARN TARAN
LOOTERS ARRESTED: Mr Jagdish Kumar Mittal, SSP, said in a press note here on Saturday that Harvinder Singh, alias Hinda, of Behla, Daljit Singh, alias Ghulla, of Dhunda and Kabal Singh, alias Kamal of Dhota village, all members of a looters gang, were arrested by the police at Doburji village on Friday. A stolen truck along with two pistols were seized. A case under the NDPS Act has been registered.

COMPLAINT LODGED: Ms Jaswinder Kaur, a lady constable, has lodged a criminal complaint in the court of Mr Arun Vir Vashisht, Judicial Magistrate, Amritsar, against Davinder Singh and Gurmit Singh, gunman-cum-drivers of ministers, for raping her.

BOOKED: Bikrampal Singh, Junior Engineer with Punjab State Electricity Board, has been booked under the Prevention of Corruption Act for taking a bribe of Rs 2500 from Bikramjeet Singh of Fatehpur Sugga village on account of replacing a transformer.

AMBALA
RUCHIKA CASE: The Special Magistrate for the CBI cases, Mr AK Tiyagi, will pronounce his order on the application filed by Mr S.P.S. Rathore, former DGP, Haryana, under Section 91, CrPC, in the Ruchika molestation case on June 5. The arguments for the summoning of certain documents for admission and denial under this section was concluded on Monday. Mr C.S. Sharma and Mr C.M. Sehgal was present on behalf of the CBI while Mr J.S. Kohli represented Mr Rathore.

BHIWANI
DOWRY: The police has started investigation into the complaint lodged by a married woman against her in-laws for torturing her for dowry and trying to kill her. The complaint was lodged by Kusumlata, of Housing Board, here, against her husband Vijay Kumar, father-in-law, mother-in-law and sister-in-law.

CASE REGISTERED: The police has registered a case of attempt to murder against seven persons for allegedly attacking a group of people over a piece of land near Bawri gate on Thursday. The police said the case had been registered on a complaint lodged by one of the injured, Karmbir of Bhiwani, against Kishori, Roshan, Amit, Verender, Madan, Manoj and Tinku.

SONEPAT
LIQUOR SEIZED: The police has seized 2,932 liquor pouches from a car on the Sonepat-Mehlana road and arrested two youths — Navin of Thana Kalan village and Prahlad of Bhatgaon village. A case under the Excise Act has been registered against them.

YOUTH ATTACKED: A youth was allegedly attacked by five armed persons at Bulandpur Kheri village, about 20 km from here, on Sunday. According to a report, the injured youth has been admitted to the local Civil Hospital.

BODY FOUND: The Gohana police found the body of a mechanic from a truck near Gohana town, about 40 km from here, on Sunday.

SEMINAR: A seminar on flower cultivation was organised at Bhota campus of the Dr Yashwant Singh Parmar University of Forestry and Horticulture on Saturday. Fifty farmers, including thirty women, took part, according to Dr S.D. Badyala, Assistant Director of the Research Center, Bhota.

MANDI
NGOs FEDERATION: The executive committee of District NGOs Federation held a meeting on Saturday. They resolved to build an NGO home in the Padal area. Mr Lal Singh Chawla, president of the federation, told this to newspersons.

SHIMLA
GHAZAL PROGRAMME: Noted ghazal singer Madhumita Bose kept the audience spellbound at “Sham-e-Ghazal” programme held at the Raj Bhavan here on Friday. It was attended by the Governor, Mr Suraj Bhan. A noted singer Rajeev Walia also sang composition of Bhakti era poets. The Governor honoured the singers with shawls.
