Jhuggis removed from Zirakpur-Panchkula road
Our Correspondent

Zirakpur, March 30
Over 45 jhuggis, which had come up on panchayat land on the Zirakpur-Panchkula highway, were removed by the enforcement wing of the Zirakpur Nagar Panchayat, here today. Some of the jhuggis were as much as 20-year- old.

According to sources, a team of the enforcement wing started the four-hour-long operation against the jhuggi-dwellers and foot-path vendors on the Zirakpur-Panchkula road in the morning. A number of reharis and pharis were also removed from the encroached land, which had been earmarked for a proposed park.

Some of the dwellers started removing the jhuggis’ themselves and took the belongings to safer places as soon as the operation started. The jhuggi- dwellers were also seen collecting their belongings from the site as the drive ended.

They complained that the Nagar Panchayat authorities removed their jhuggis without prior notice. Mr Ram Singh, a jhuggi-owner, claimed that they had occupied the piece of land about 20 years ago and now had no shelter for their families.

It being a rainy day, they had to pass the nights in the open or pitch makeshift jhuggis. Small children were also seen collecting household goods and shifting what ever was left, to safer places.

The Nagar Panchayat authorities said the encroachers were given prior notices. The Zirakpur Nagar Panchayat has planned to develop a park at a cost of over Rs1 crore at the site from where the unauthorised jhuggis and reharis were removed, authorities claimed.
