Health camp at Rajiv Colony

PANCHKULA, Feb 27 — A multi-speciality health camp was organised by the Family Planning Association of India (FPAI) at Rajiv Colony in Sector 16 on the occasion of the visit of the President of the International Planned Parenthood Federation (IPPF), Ms Angela Gomez, here today.

The camp, providing health check-up and treatment, immunisation, dental check-up and counselling for newly weds, attracted a lot of colony residents. Being managed essentially by non-government organisations, Upkaar Society, Inner Wheel Club and Piya Sharma Charitable Trust, the treatment and counselling was given free of cost.

The members of the Youth Caravan from the local government college presented a skit highlighting the exploitation of women, the harassment at workplace and home and the insistence on dowry by in-laws.

Titled Azaadi, the play revolved around the atrocities committed on women and how they join hands to fight for their rights, succeeding ultimately in the end. A folk dance was another item staged at the welcome function.

Accompanied by the President of the FPAI, Dr Nina Puri, Regional Director of the IPPF, Dr Indira Kapoor, Ms Gomez was welcomed by members of the FPAI. A member, Dr Amit Gupta, spoke on the activities and camps held under their supervision in the past.

Earlier, Ms Gomez went through an exhibition on health and hygiene, family planning methods, immunisation and the growing threat of the sexually transmitted diseases, on display at the venue.

Anti-TB campaign launched

CHANDIGARH, Feb 27 — Keeping in view of the health problems presented by the ever growing menace of TB in the slums of the UT, Chandigarh Administration in association with the Department of Community Medicine, GMCH, Sector 32 and the Department of Chest and Tuberculosis, launched a special project, here today.

To mark the beginning of the campaign, Prof S.B.S. Mann, Director Principal, GMCH, flagged off a rally in colony No 5 in which 350 children and teachers from Government Primary School, medical students and doctors participated. Later, speaking on the occasion, Professor Mann, assured full support to control the disease from the city slums while Ms Pratibha Behal, Headmistress of the school, urged the children to spread awareness about the deadly disease

The campaign will be part of an ongoing programme by the GMCH in which a series of activities will be carried out to detect the cases of infectious tuberculosis to control its spread in the city.

Annual sport meet

SAS NAGAR, Feb 27 — Sant Isher Singh Model Senior Secondary School here organised its annual sport meet yesterday. More than 800 students took part in it.

The meet began with an impressive march past. A mass PT show was presented by 200 students which included items like the bamboo and ring drills, lazium and dumb-bells. Pupils also presented bhangra and giddha.

Ms Satwant Kaur Sandhu, Punjab Minister, gave away the prizes for achievements in the sport, cultural and academic fields. She announced a grant of Rs 50,000 for the school building.

Ms Hardip Kaur Gill, Director of the school, welcomed the guests.

Presentation on IT park

CHANDIGARH, Feb 27 — The second and final presentation of top consultants to guide the Chandigarh Administration through its proposed hi-tech Information Technology park project was made today. After seeing and sifting through the presentations the Administration will be shortly making a selection of a consultant.

The Secretary, Information Technology, Mr Rakesh Singh, said the consultant will be guiding the Administration of the project, besides, informing on various aspects and querries arising during the course of setting up of the IT park near eastern side of the Sukhna lake. The consultant will be advising the Administration on whom to invite and who should a partner the Administration and on what terms and conditions.
