DORAHA, Feb 10 — The taxi driver, who was nabbed by the Payal police from Nabha yesterday, apart from accepting that he had committed the murder, has hinted at a hand of the wife in the husband’s killing.

Economic offences on the rise
LUDHIANA, Feb 10 — Though cases of robbery and murder are comparatively low in the city, economic offences seem to be on the rise. As many as 10 cases of different natures of fraud and forgery were registered by the district police in the last 24 hours only. Better known as ‘white-collar crime’, the trend had lied low in the first month of this year whereas the last couple of years, had constantly witnessed a rise in such offences.

Two new residential schemes for city
LUDHIANA, Feb 10 — Ludhiana Improvement Trust (LIT) will undertake the development of two new residential schemes of 10.75 acre and 8.8 acre on Pakhowal Road in the city to cope with the ever-increasing demand in the mega city. The schemes have already been notified by the State Government and the preliminary work will commence in the near future.

LUDHIANA, Feb 10 — The ‘pro-farmer’ Akali-BJP coalition government is working against the interests of the farmers and manufacturers of tractors and combine parts. 

Rs 65 lakh raised for quake relief
LUDHIANA, Feb 10 — Contributions in cash and kind continued to pour in at the special relief counter for earthquake victims of Gujarat, set up by the district administration here. According to the Deputy Commissioner, Mr S.K. Sandhu, cash donations made by members of trade and industry, individuals and other social, religious, educational and cultural institutions in the district had already crossed Rs 65 lakh and the figure was expected to exceed Rs 1 crore during next couple of days.

Good response to census
LUDHIANA, Feb 10 — There has been a positive public response to the census here. About 5,000 enumerators are well on their way to achieve the target of covering at least 20 households in a day.

Special IT camps being organised
LUDHIANA, Feb 10 — The Income Tax Department , Ludhiana, is organising special camps in different parts of the city to file Form 2C from February 2 to 20.

DMC comes to aid of martyr’s family
LUDHIANA, Feb 10 — The Dayanand Medical College and Hospital management today provided cash assistance of Rs 50,000 to the family of Naik Harinder Singh of Bassian village, in Bet area near here, who was killed in action on March 11, 2000 in an encounter will militants in Asam.

SAD (A) to boycott poll
AMLOH, Feb 10 — Activists of the Shiromani Akali Dal (A) will not take part in the mid-term poll on February 19, at Majitha as contesting parties “Congress and SAD (Badal )” are both responsible for the Operation Blue Star and the election is not fair as the orders of Election Commission are disobeyed, distillation of country- made liquor is free for all,” said Mr Simranjit Singh Mann, President, and SAD(A) and member, Lok Sabha, at a meeting here today, which was organised in connection with the celebrations of the birth anniversary of Sant Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale on February 12, at Fatehgarh Sahib.

Octroi evasion detected
LUDHIANA, Feb 10 — The octroi staff of the municipal corporation has unearthed large-scale evasion of octroi during a drive to check night service buses, plying between Delhi-Ludhiana. 

One killed in mishap
KHANNA, Feb 10 — One person was killed and another was injured in a road accident near Gurdwara Manji Sahib on the GT Road, 15 km from here, today.

Woman commits suicide
LUDHIANA, Feb 10 — Family problems allegedly led a married woman to end her life by drinking acid. The deceased woman, Taranjit Kaur, married to a city resident eight years ago, consumed acid two days ago and died at PGI Chandigarh last night. Her post-mortem was conducted at the Civil Hospital here today. 

House burgled
LUDHIANA, Feb 10 — A house near Octroi Post, Ferozepur road, was burgled today afternoon. The burglers decamped with gold ornaments, clothes and about Rs 5,000 worth of cash. 

Drunkard beats wife
JAGRAON, Feb 10 — Kuldip Singh of Rauwal village attacked his wife, Rajinder Kaur, under the influence of liquor and broke her arm. The wife complained to the police that her husband was a habitual drinker and such torture was a routine.

Akhwinder best athlete
LUDHIANA, Feb 10 — Akhwinder was adjudged the best athlete of the annual athletics meet of the Ramgarhia College for Women here today. Akhwinder won a gold medal each in the 200 m, 800 m, 400 m and 100 m events of the meet.

Akhwinder Kaur who was adjudged the best athlete at the annual athletics meet of the Ramgarhia College for Women.

Unity XI enter final
LUDHIANA, Feb 10 — The Unity XI has entered the final of the 5th Rajeev Gandhi Memorial Cricket Tournament, by defeating Parath XI by a margin of 24 runs here on Saturday. Unity XI will play the final match with VCC XI, tomorrow morning at Daresi Ground.

Two more golds for Aaya
LUDHIANA, Feb 10 — Aaya Singh won two gold medals on the second day of the three-day 54th Annual Athletics Meet of Arya College for Boys here. He has now won five gold medals in the meet. He won a gold medal each in the 100 m race and long jump events.
