Grant for colonies enhanced
Tribune News Service

CHANDIGARH, Feb 5 — The UT Administration has enhanced the grant-in- aid for providing services to rehabilitated colonies from Rs 1.2 crore to Rs 2.2 crore. An intimation in this regard has been received by the Municipal Corporation only last week.

A senior official in the Accounts Department said “the additional amount of Rs 1 crore stands sanctioned in the revised estimates for the current year. The same will be made available shortly as the request for releasing the amount for the last quarter has been sent.”

Congress councillor, Mrs Kamlesh, when contacted, said she alongwith Mrs Suneeta had recently met the Punjab Governor and UT Administrator, Lt Gen (retd) J.F.R. Jacob, and had asked him to sanction an increase in grant-in-aid for upgrading services in rehabilitated colonies and for carrying out other developmental works in the slum areas. They had pointed out that the work had been suffering as no grant was being received from the Central Government for the past two years. They had urged that till the Central Government resumed the grant, the UT administration should make these funds available.

Mrs Suneeta while expressing her gratitude said the work in the colonies had been neglected due to constraint of funds and now the enhancement would enable the authorities to undertake all pending works. She added that the number of people staying in these colonies was fairly large and authorities should attend to their needs.

Community centre to be opened on Feb 9
Tribune News Service

CHANDIGARH, Feb 5 — The Adviser to the UT Administrator, Mrs Neeru Nanda, will inaugurate the newly-built community centre in Sector 46 on February 9, following which it will be thrown open to the public for bookings.

Built at a cost of Rs 25 lakh, it has provision of two community halls, rooms, a library, kitchen and store, besides an office and other infrastructure. It has been furnished at a cost of Rs 1 lakh. The lawns will be available for Rs 1500 per day, the halls for Rs 1000 per day and both lawn and hall for Rs 2000 per day. A five per cent service charge will also be levied on these charges.

The centre has been lying as such even though it was completed six months back. Officials attribute the delay to the constraint of funds in furnishing the same.

It may be recalled that the MC Commissioner, Mr M.P Singh had last month passed orders that bookings be opened in six new community centres in Sectors 46, 41, Mauli Jagran, Palsora, Maloya and Indira colonies, even before the formal inaugurations. Bookings were subsequently started in Sectors 46 and 41, but only for a day. The two bookings made, one each in both the cases were cancelled the very next day due to some opposition and it was decided that the same would be thrown open only after formal inaugurations. The same is the fate of other community centres, for which the inauguration dates are yet to be fixed.
