Skaters’ rally for quake relief

CHANDIGARH, Feb 1 — The skaters of Blue Bird Skating Club, Sector 16, today organised a rally for collection of Gujarat earthquake relief. About 100 children of the club on their skates started from the school premises under the escort provided by Panchkula police to Sector 11 and Sector 7 markets, collecting whatever donations from the people.

The children were very enthusiastic and the parents and the public gave whole-hearted support to them. The children were served snacks and milk. The president of the club donated Rs 2,000 and lauded the efforts of these skaters. The entire money collected for the District Red Cross was being sent to the Deputy Commissioner’s office, Panchkula.

Narinder to lead

Narinder Awasthi of Sanjay Public School, Sector 44, will lead the UT junior football team which will take part in the junior national football meet (under-19) for the BC Roy Trophy to be held in Bangalore from February 5 to 11. Four football players in under-19 section of the school were also selected by the School Games Federation of India for National School Games to be held at Kolhapur beginning tomorrow. These players are Manish Pathania, Prabhjot Singh, Gobind Thapa and Vinay.

Athletics meet

The two-day annual athletics meet of Government College of Education, Sector 20-D, was inaugurated by Prof A.S. Dhaliwal. Results are as follows: girls — 400m: Kanwarpreet 1, Mandeep 2, Sargam 3; three-legged race: Amanjot 1, Mandeep 2, Parul 2, Anu 2, Meeenakshi 3, Sudha 3; long jump: Kanwalpreet 1, Mandeep 2, Tina 3; discus throw: Mandeep 1, Tina 2, Navneet 3; high jump: Kanwalpreet 1, Anita 2, Tina 3; javelin throw: Anita 1, Sarika 2, Tina 3; boys — 400 m: Sunil 1, Mohinder 2, Harmandeep 3; discus throw: Harsh 1, Nyima 2, Sabveer Singh 3; 200 m: Sunil 1,Gurpreet 2, Sandeep 3; shot put: Harsh Deep 1, Sunil 2, Amanpreet 3; long jump: Sunil Kundu 1, Harmandeep 2, Gurpreet Singh 3.

Saplings planted

More than 150 employees of the UT Sports Department and the UT Sports Council, along with 24 children of the Chandigarh Football Academy, planted saplings around the Sports Complex, Sector 42. It was inaugurated by Mr M. Ramsekhar, DC-cum-Director, Sports. The Additional Director, Sports, Mr P.S. Gill, and the Joint Director, Sports, Mr J.P.S. Sidhu, were also present.

Pinjore water scheme okayed

CHANDIGARH, Feb 1 — The Ministry of Urban Development and Poverty Alleviation, Government of India, has approved a scheme for augmentation of water supply to Pinjore at an estimated cost of Rs 286 lakh.

An official press release said that the project envisaged the installation of two tubewells, one boosting station, one underground service reservoir at the highest point, laying of pipeline in Pinjore, Shiv Colony, Vishvkarma Colony and Bitna Colony. A connecting pipeline from the boosting station to the underground reservoir and the existing overhead reservoir would also be built.

It is learnt that the scheme would be funded by the central and state governments and would be completed in three years.

With the implementation of this scheme, around 13,000 people will get water supply at the rate of 70 LPCD as against 40 LPCD presently.
