West Indies make confident start SYDNEY, Jan 4 (AFP) — Glenn McGrath bowled Wavell Hinds with the second-last ball of the day to prevent a looming West Indies opening century partnership on the third day of the fifth and final Test today. At the close of the third day, the West Indies had whittled away at the 180-run innings deficit to be 98 for one and trail Australia by 82 runs. Just when the tourists were about to see out stumps at the Sydney Cricket Ground, McGrath struck, Hinds lifting his bat and offering no shot to be bowled for 46. Up until then the tourists had weathered the Australians’ opening onslaught through their new opening pair, Sherwin Campbell and Hinds. Campbell and Hinds, who combined in a record 147-run first-wicket partnership in the first innings, put on 98 for the first wicket. The West Indies will resume on the fourth day tomorrow setting their sights on building on their promising start to score 350-plus and put the heat back on Australia in the final innings. Australia’s spin twins, Colin Miller and Stuart MacGill, expected to unravel the tourists’ batting on the conducive SCG pitch, had few chances of dislodging the opening pair. Australian skipper Steve Waugh signalled his intentions when he brought on his blue-rinse offspinner Miller in the second over of the innings in anticipation of immediate turn. Campbell, who bounced back to form with his 79 in the first innings after a dire series, was unbeaten on 45. Australia prolonged their first innings through lusty hitting by tailenders Miller and Glenn McGrath, who put on 42 runs for the last wicket before McGrath was run out on the throw of Colin Stuart going for a second run. Miller, with photos of his blue rinse hair splashed across the front pages of the morning papers, crashed two sixes and a boundary in his unbeaten 37 while McGrath chipped in with 13. Australia, gunning for their 15th successive Test victory and an unprecedented 5-0 series clean sweep, were dismissed for 452 off 135.4 overs about 30 minutes before tea to lead by 180 on the first innings. It was the Australians’ highest innings of the five-Test series and their fifth total above 300. Adam Gilchrist made the West Indies pay dearly for a fumbled catch by skipper Jimmy Adams facing his first ball. The dashing wicketkeeper-batsman profited from his reprieve blazing away for 87 with nine fours and a six off 124 balls to compound Adams’ blunder in the gully off Colin Stuart. Gilchrist was out a half-hour after lunch with his second Test hundred beckoning when he was snapped up by Brian Lara at slip off Stuart. Lara sought treatment from the team trainer for split webbing in his hand in taking the stinging catch. Australian captain Steve Waugh, 82 overnight, completed his century to join Test greats Greg Chappell, Sachin Tendulkar and Viv Richards on 24 Test hundreds behind leader Sunil Gavaskar on 34. Waugh, who was man-of-the-match for his unbeaten 121 in last week’s fourth Melbourne Test, was out for 103 shortly before lunch in bizarre circumstances. He kicked at a wide delivery outside his legstump from spinner Mahendra Nagamootoo only for the ball to ricochet off his left pad and onto his stumps. Waugh faced 238 balls and batted for 300 minutes. He hit nine fours and a six. Ricky Ponting lasted nine balls before he was out on his overnight score of 51. Stuart, generating lively pace, trapped him leg before wicket. Nagamootoo finished with 3-119 off 35 overs while Stuart claimed 2-81 off 23 overs. World record wicket-taker Courtney Walsh left the ground during the morning session with apparent ankle problems. Walsh, who has taken 493 wickets, was struggling through his overs in the morning session and called for pain-killers at one stage. Campbell’s century of no avail wellington, Jan 4 (Reuters) — New Zealand avenged their 70-run defeat by Zimbabwe in the first one-day international to square the series with an emphatic eight-wicket win today.
Alistair Campbell cracked a century in Zimbabwe’s 236 for seven off 50 overs but his fine effort was in vain as a 153-run opening stand by Nathan Astle (89 not out) and Mathew Sinclair (85) set up the hosts. Even when Sinclair was run out to a brilliant piece of fielding by Guy Whittall, Scott Styris blasted 48 off just 33 balls to keep New Zealand in command. The Zimbabwe bowlers had no answer, but Astle should have been out to catches on two and 13 — Stuart Carlisle and Doug Marillier were the culprits — and Sinclair might have been stumped on 73. Leg-spinner Brian Murphy bowled Styris off the penultimate ball of his spell. Zimbabwe lost their way in spite of opener Campbell’s 111 and would have been disappointed with their final total. Gavin Rennie hit a solid 46 not out at the end of the innings and Heath Streak did his customary artful clubbing to bring the score to respectability. Craig McMillan was the best New Zealand bowler with two for 30 off eight overs. James Franklin took two for 46 off the full 10. Sinclair was named Man of the Match for his maiden one-day half-century. The third and deciding one-day game is scheduled for Auckland on Sunday. Sri Lanka collapse to innings defeat CAPE TOWN, Jan 4 (Reuters) — South Africa stormed to a crushing victory over Sri Lanka by an innings and 229 runs on the third day of the second Test today. Sri Lanka, 409 behind on first innings, were dismissed for 180 to give South Africa a 1-0 lead in the three-match series after the first Test was drawn. Left-arm spinner Nicky Boje snapped up four for 28 as the home side achieved their biggest Test win, surpassing the innings and 219 runs thrashing they handed Zimbabwe in Harare in the 1999-2000 season. Earlier, South Africa had continued their first innings run spree by moving from their overnight 426 for six to reach a massive 504 for seven declared, following the dismissal of Sri Lanka for just 95 on day one. But it was another poor showing by their batsmen, who again were unable to cope with hostile, short-pitched bowling on a pitch with good bounce but no hidden terrors. South African captain Shaun Pollock declared at 504 for seven half an hour before lunch today with his side 409 runs ahead on the Sri Lankan total. Sri Lanka were in trouble almost immediately. Skipper Sanath Jayasuriya was caught low down in the gully off Mfuneko Ngam’s second ball for his second duck of a series in which he has scored only 34 runs. Jayasuriya stood his ground and the decision was referred to television umpire Wilf Diedricks, who viewed several replays before confirming the Sri Lankan captain was out. Ngam produced a vicious 147kmh bouncer which Kumar Sangakkara only just avoided but Sangakkara and Atapattu survived until lunch. Kumar Sangakkara failed to avoid a lifter from Ngam and was caught behind for 11 and Marvan Atapattu was trapped on his crease to be lbw to Pollock for 13. Faced with defeat, the Sri Lankans opted to go for their shots against attacking fields. ‘Stand vindicated by CBI probe’ CHANDIGARH, Jan 4 (PTI) — Former cricket board chief I.S. Bindra will appear before the board’s disciplinary committee in Chennai on January 18 to explain his alleged criticism of the apex body. Mr Bindra, who is Punjab Cricket Association (PCA) president, told PTI here today that he and PCA secretary M.P. Pandove had been asked to appear before the committee after the board executive committee expressed its dissatisfaction with their written replies to the show-cause notice served on them some time ago. Asked if he would go to Chennai, Bindra said “certainly Pandove and I will appear before the committee and give our reply in addition to the written one which had been sent earlier”. “It would not be proper to make public the written reply to the show-cause notice,” he said. Bindra reiterated that his statements were not against the board. India to play two Tests in Zimbabwe MUMBAI, Jan 4 (PTI) — The Indian cricket team will play two Test matches, apart from a triangular series involving West Indies, India and Zimbabwe, on their 43-day tour of Zimbabwe from May 25 to July 7. Except Yugoslavia and Iraq, who are placed in Group I along with Bosnia and Bangladesh, all other teams in the 16-team tournament have sent in the full list of their team members and officials. Hosts India, however, have not named any officials with the team. The confusion about the nomenclature of the tournament seems to still persist as the public relations agency Anthem, who released the team lists on behalf of the AIFF and promoters Studio 2100, has conveniently left out the name of the tournament. |

All eyes were on ‘‘dangerous Dent’’ as the new, talented kid on the ATP Tour took on another big serving but lower ranked (191) Pless. Dent looked to continue with his brilliant run as he served powerfully and volleyed at every given opportunity as the first set went by serves and into the tie-breaker. Despite trailing 1-3 in the tie-break, Dent came back strongly levelling terms at 3-3 and led 4-3 as Pless hit a forehand return out. But Pless equalled again 4-4 as the two youngsters battled on even terms till the tie-break scores were tied at 9-9. |
