Steve Waugh props up Australia

MELBOURNE, Dec 26 (AFP) — Captain Steve Waugh shepherded Australia out of rare trouble against the West Indies with another of his stoic fighting innings on the opening day of the fourth cricket Test here today.

Waugh, coming in at 101 for three, frustrated the tourists’ attempts to bowl Australia out for under 300 for the first time this summer with the skipper nearing his 23rd century in his 131st Test match.

The flinty 35-year-old, playing his 15th anniversary Test since his debut against India here in 1985, buttressed the Australian tailend to resuscitate the innings, which had stalled several times.

At stumps, Australia, who had already clinched the series with wins in the first three Tests, were 295-7 with Waugh on 98 and Jason Gillespie not out on 14 before capacity crowd on Australian cricket’s showpiece day at the MCG.

Waugh had faced 183 balls in 256 minutes with 13 fours, while Gillespie was at the crease for 100 minutes providing staunch support.

Aussie batsmen failed to take advantage of early starts and go on for big scores, yet at the end of the day a great opportunity had been frittered away by the hapless tourists.

Michael Slater was out for 30, Matthew Hayden 13, Justin Langer 31, Mark Waugh 25, Ricky Ponting 23 and Adam Gilchrist 37. But Steve Waugh yet again showed his colleagues the way with another innings of unwavering concentration and grit.

Rated the batsman to rely on in a crisis, Waugh made his return from a injury which stopped him from playing in last week’s third Adelaide Test and enabling vice-captain Gilchrist to lead his country for the first time.

The West Indies, decidedly second-best throughout the series, had enjoyed one of their few successful days on tour with debutant Colin Stuart and Mervyn Dillon leading the attack.

And apart from a wretched attempt to catch Slater by Sherwin Campbell in the slips in the opening half-hour, the West Indian fielding was much better than previous stints in this series.

Wicketkeeper Ridley Jacobs, one of the few tour successes with an unbeaten 96 in the second Perth Test, took four catches today.

Australia lost openers Slater and Hayden in the first session and went to lunch at 77 for two.

Hayden was out soon after the first hour when he attempted to drive Courtney Walsh but edged to Jacobs for 13. It was 38-year-old Walsh’s eighth wicket of the series taking him to 491 in Tests.

Slater had a life on nine when he edged Mervyn Dillon chest high to Campbell at second slip, but the West Indian vice-captain spilled the two-handed chance.

The impetuous opener added 21 more runs before he top-edged Nixon McLean for Jacobs to run around to short fine leg to glove a comfortable catch.

Australia upped the tempo after lunch with Langer adding 21 runs in 16 minutes before he gave Jacobs his third catch of the innings and newcomer Stuart his first Test wicket to be out for 31.

Mark Waugh was out 16 minutes later when he fended a rising ball from Dillon to a diving Jimmy Adams in the gully for 25 leaving Australia at 105 for four.

Ponting signalled his intentions from the outset cracking Dillon for four and looked in deft touch hitting five fours before he fell for 23 off a hook to a marvellous diving catch at fine leg by Wavell Hinds off McLean.

Gilchrist cracked a typically rumbustious 37 off 58 balls with six boundaries before he was brilliantly snapped up by Campbell at backward point off Stuart and Andy Bichel lasted 18 balls for his three.

Fourth half ton by Richardson

WELLINGTON, Dec 26 (Reuters) — New Zealand finished the first day of a one-off Test against Zimbabwe today on 190 for four with the state of the Wellington pitch the main talking point.

Nathan Astle, 56 not out and Craig McMillan, on 20, were together when stumps were drawn.

There were two run-outs in a tough day for New Zealand.

Opener Mark Richardson, who posted his fourth half-century in his sixth Test, was out for 75 when he was slow off the mark in running a single off Astle’s bat.

The ball went to Henry Olonga at mid-wicket whose perfect throw enabled wicketkeeper Andy Flower to break the stumps with Richardson well short.

Richardson had earlier been instrumental in the run-out of his captain, Stephen Fleming, for 22 just after the lunch-tea session began.

On an unusually sluggish pitch for the Basin Reserve, runs were difficult to come by and the bowlers held a good line. None of the batsmen apart from Richardson looked set for a long stay.

New Zealand coach David Trist said the wicket provided variable bounce.

“We are used to harder, faster pitches here,’’ he said. “It wasn’t easy batting today, but having said that we also surrendered a lot of advantage. We’ll be hoping to push on towards 350 tomorrow.’’

Trist said he believed New Zealand won the day, “but only on points’’.

Carl Rackemann, the Zimbabwe coach, described the pitch as dead. “It’s the same for both sides,’’ he said. “It’s a question of coping with the conditions.’’

Zimbabwe Test debutant Douglas Marillier is a doubtful starter when the tourists get to bat after severely bruising his right thumb while fielding, adding to the Zimbabwean injury woes after star batsman Grant Flower was ruled out of the tour by a broken index finger.

Kirsten’s ton puts SA in charge

DURBAN, Dec 26 (Reuters) — Gary Kirsten’s unbeaten 112 left South Africa in charge after the opening day of the first Test against Sri Lanka today.

They were 230 for three when bad light ended play 10.4 overs early.

Kirsten’s 11th Test century was chanceless. He has faced 210 balls and hit 15 fours.

South Africa established their dominance in partnerships of 55 between Kirsten and Jacques Kallis for the third wicket and 108 for the third wicket between Kirsten and Daryll Cullinan.

Cullinan scored 59, his 13th half century, before becoming off-spinner Muttiah Muralitharan’s 292nd Test victim. His 116-ball innings included seven fours and a six.

Kirsten and Daryll Cullinan (batting 43) put on an unbeaten 82 for the third wicket after fast bowler Dilhara Fernando took both the wickets.

Fernando, (21), playing in his second Test, made the first breakthrough with his fifth delivery of the match when he had Boeta Dippenaar caught behind for 11 when the total was on 31.

Fernando then broke a promising 55-run stand between Kirsten and Jacques Kallis when Kallis misjudged a hook and spooned a catch to Muttiah Muralitharan at square leg.

Fernando, who built up a lively pace, had taken two for 30 off 13 overs at tea. Cullinan, whose place in the team was under threat after a string of sub-standard performances, looked in good form from the start of his innings.

AP govt ties itself in knots over invitation to Azhar

HYDERABAD, Dec 26 (PTI) — Andhra Pradesh Government today appeared to have tied itself in knots seeking to explain the controversy over the “invitation” to tainted cricketer Mohammad Azharuddin to an Iftar hosted by the Chief Minister, Mr N. Chandrababu Naidu, last week.

A day after Azharuddin said he had not gone to the Iftar uninvited, a top official of the government’s Protocol Department said today: “There were over 3,000 invitees to the Iftar hosted by the Chief Minister on Friday last at a stadium here and I am not sure whether or not there was an invitation we sent to Azharuddin”.

He confirmed that Azharuddin’s name figured in the list of Padma Shri awardees’ but was not sure if an invitation was mailed to him under VIP category for the Iftar.

When specifically asked if Azharuddin’s name figured in the mailing list, the official said “I don’t think so” but denied any knowledge of mailing the invitation to him.

“Besides, we have circulated over 1,000 blank invitations to ministers and other dignitaries to distribute among their known circles”, he said adding “it is quite possible for Azhar to receive one such invitation”.

“The cricketer was brought into the VIP gallery by Majlis Ittehadul Muslimeen (MIM) MP Salauddin Owaisi”, the official said, adding as it was a large gathering where the guests were invited from various sources, it would be difficult to find out immediately the origin of the invitation.

Azharuddin told PTI yesterday that he attended the Iftar hosted by Mr Naidu only on invitation from the Protocol Department and his name was listed in the serial number 17 of the list.

The former cricketer said he was pained about the reports appearing in a section of press which stated that he had gate-crashed into the Chief Minister’s Iftar.

Mr Naidu was reported by some newspapers as saying: “I did not invite him but if somebody greets you at a function you just cannot brush him aside”.

‘No proposal to review tour’

NEW DELHI, Dec 26 (PTI) — The government today reiterated that there was no proposal to review its decision on the Indian cricket team’s tour of Pakistan next month.

Following reports from Islamabad that the cancelled tour was likely to be revived, official sources when contacted said “There is no proposal at present to review the decision regarding our cricket team’s tour of Pakistan”.

The Indian Government had refused permission to the BCCI to send a team on a tour of Pakistan as it said the atmosphere, following the Kargil war and that country’s support to militants in Kashmir, was not conducive.

The fresh round of speculation about the tour started after the Pakistan Cricket Board chief, Lt-Gen Tauqir Zia, said in Islamabad yesterday that he had received positive signals that India could go there for a short tour next month.

Lt-Gen Zia said Pakistan’s representative in International Cricket Council Ehsan Mani had talked to Board of Control for Cricket in India, President, Mr A.C. Muthiah, who told him that India was planning a short tour of Pakistan. The tour, comprising four Tests and five one-dayers, was originally scheduled for December-January but was cancelled by the Indian Government .

Anand’s win marks Asian supremacy

TEHRAN, Dec 26 (PTI) — Viswanathan Anand’s World Championship win here has underlined supremacy of Asian region over the game of chess, which the Europeans and specially the Russians ruled for over a century.

“This is a victory for India as well as Asia,” said FIDE vice president P.T. Ummer Koya reacting to Anand’s triumph.

“In New Delhi, Xie Jun of China triumphed; in Tehran it was Anand. Asia is now on top of the world chess,” he exclaimed.

It was a celebration time in Tehran as Anand’s win was hailed by the world media as a great victory for India. This has come soon after India’s creditable performance at the Chess Olympiad in Istanbul.

Koya, who is also the secretary of All-India Chess Federation (AICF), said the chess body would capitalise on Anand’s success and popularise chess in India.

Tennis: mediocre start in new millennium

NEW DELHI, Dec 26 (PTI) — If human tendency is to forget, then Indian fans must forgive the tennis duo of Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi — for they did not realise the consequence of their actions as the country witnessed a mediocre start to the new millennium.

India celebrated a golden year of tennis in 1999 with the all-conquering pair virtually ruling the doubles world winning two Grand Slam titles from four finals, but a heartbreaking split between the two early this season took all that away.

The only consolation was that Paes and Bhupathi realised being together had been more fruitful for them, than wandering around the world with different playing partners in the quest to be at the top.

The season-ending ATP World Doubles Championship marked India’s efforts and achievement over the past years in tennis as Bangalore hosted the tournament — when for first time it moved out of Europe and the USA.

Paes and Bhupathi were given wildcard entry, and they did extremely well to make it to the summit clash before a poor show in the final against the US-South African pair of Donald Johnson and Piet Norval saw their dreams come crashing down.

The two opened the campaign in style winning both their opening round robin matches in the toughest gold group, before losing the inconsequential third tie.

The crack combination then scored an authoritative win in the semis against top seeded Rick Leach and Ellis Ferreria, but a title in Bangalore would have been an icing on the cake, which otherwise was a bland one for 2000.

A win at Japan Open in Tokyo at the fag end of the season was something to show for after the pair had sorted out their differences.

But, tennis fans would like to forget the acrimonious events — verbal tirade following the split — which took away from India, what seemed a most likely gold medal at the Sydney Olympic Games.

The millennium’s first Olympics was an ideal platform for Paes and Bhupathi to put India back on the world’s tennis map, but it was not to be as the two struggled to gel well after such a long break following the split.

The telepathic understanding of each other they enjoyed over the years on the tour was missing.

And, a severe confidence crisis compounded by niggling injuries nearly undid them.

Call it a malady of errors, or sheer casualness with which the two tour professionals carried India’s campaign in Sydney — the country came back with a big zero from tennis.

At the Sydney Games, Atlanta bronze medallist Paes, stumbled out in the first round of the singles event against lanky Swede Mikael Tillstrom, then paired with Bhupathi for the doubles challenge and managed to get past the first round.

What happened next was history and Indian fans would not like to remember it. The crack Aussie tandem of Mark Woodforde and Todd Woodbridge had billed the Sydney Olympics as their swansong of the fruitful partnership.

Having got a bye to the second round, the Woodies were charged up to face anybody in front of their home crowd, and as luck would have it, that anybody turned out to be the Indian duo.

And, Paes, Bhupathi were handed a straight set thrashing by the Aussies.

Not an apt finish by the country’s flag-bearer at an Olympics while those of other nations strove hard and many ended with laurels.

Preceding the Olympics — after Paes and Bhupathi had patched-up their differences - there was nothing extraordinary in their performances for the fans to look for.

A semifinal appearance in the Hamlet Cup at Long Island, in the USA was the only high point in their comeback trail, and rest were the first round defeats including at the year’s final Grand Slam, the US Open at the Flushing Meadows.

India’s Davis Cup campaign continued dodgedly as the former finalists struggled to keep pace with the intensively competitive field.

The world group play-off loss to Britain in 1998 seems to have cast a curse on India’s Davis Cup ambitions as ever since then the country has been fighting to stay in the group i of Asia-Oceania Zone.

A loss to Korea in typically Siberian conditions at Cheju Island in February 1999 changed the way India’s future Davis Cup campaigns were fought.

India lost 2-3 but the tie was crucial in terms of how an emotional Paes was given a rough ride. It was then clear that non-playing captain Jaideep Mukerjea was on his way out.

China were thrashed 5-0 at home later in April and India helped themselves stay afloat in group i for the year 2000.

As Bhupathi was recovering from rotator cuff shoulder surgery he underwent in November 1999 soon after losing in the final of the ATP World Doubles Championship at Hartford, India had to depend solely on Paes to guide the country into the second round.

A complacent India managed to scrape past minnows Lebanon 3-2 in Lucknow in February, but again faced their cup nemesis Korea in April - this time at home.

Paes, a team man to the core, raised Indian spirits substantially, and with touche artiste Ramesh Krishnan at the helm of affairs as non-playing captain, the boys in the team could not have asked for more.

Paes won his singles easily, but what caught the attention of many in the Delhi rubber was the local lad Vishal Uppal’s performance. He combined splendidly with Paes to give India a crucial 2-1 lead before Paes closed out the affair.

The win took India to the doorsteps of world group 2001.

Alas, that was not to be as former champions Sweden were starring at them. A 0-5 bashing at Bastad was an eye-opener.

Paes missed the July tie due to wrist injury he sustained while playing at the French Open, and it was left to Bhupathi to carry India’s very slim hopes. The loss has again left the country to fight it out again in the Asia-Oceania Zone 2001.

Eleswhere, there was hardly anything to take note of. Youngesters showed promise but only just.

Vishal Uppal’s rise to stardom after the Davis Cup triumph was momentary as he failed to do anything credible on the Indian satellite and challenger circuit.

Harsh Mankad showed some promise, seasoned Nitin Kirtane won hardcourt nationals with Rushmi Chakravarthy taking the honours in the women’s section, but everybody performed in patches giving very slender hopes for the coming years.

Nirupama Vaidyanathan, who became the first Indian woman to win a round at a Grand Slam, spent most of the time playing challenger events in the USA, represented the country at the Fed Cup in Thailand where India fell at the last hurdle to Taiwan.

Nirupama was lucky to get a wildcard entry into the women’s doubles event at the Olympic Games along with Manisha Malhotra when the German pair of Anke Huber and Jana Kandarr withdrew. There was nothing shocking in their first round loss in Sydney.

Overall, tennis suffered throughout after a golden 1999, but what hurt most was that no youngster showed the promise of carrying the weight of Indian hopes in the coming years.

When Ramesh Krishnan and Amritraj brothers hung their racquets, Paes and Bhupathi were there to take on the mantle.

But, after them it looks like a yawning gap which might take years to be filled.

In the second half Gurmeet Singh of RCF earned a penalty stroke, which was neatly converted by midfielder Bipin Kumar. However, Rock Rovers were quick on the counter attack and Rajpal Singh scored when his rasping shot brooked no resistance from the rival custodian to level the scores.

With regulation period ending a goal apiece for both the teams, the tie-breaker rule had to be enforced in which the Rock Rovers missed a stroke while RCF converted all the five to emerge winners.
