Windies squeeze past follow-on mark

MELBOURNE, Dec 27 (AFP) — The West Indies squeezed past the follow-on to stall Australia’s relentless charge for another comprehensive win and their record 14th on the trot in a dramatic finish to the second day of the fourth cricket Test here today.

Chasing Australia’s first innings 364, last man in Courtney Walsh was run out going for a ridiculous third run after he and partner Marlon Samuel had averted the follow-on by just one run. West Indies, who were all out for 165, thus forced Australia to bat again.

Having already lost the series after big defeats in the first three Tests, the West Indies looked doomed to face the indignity of being forced to follow-on, but they were indebted to a spirited unbeaten 60 from Samuel.

Samuel, playing in only his second Test, had batted with courage for 153 minutes while his teammates crashed around him.

The Test now looks certain to go into a fourth day after the West Indians had been humbled inside three days in the first two Tests in Brisbane and Perth.

The tourists looked to have stabilised with a 75-run sixth wicket stand between the in-form Ridley Jacobs and Samuels before Jacobs fell to a blinding one-handed catch from Mark Waugh at second slip to leave his team at 103 for six.

With Jacobs back in the stands for 42 off 69 balls after his unbeaten 96 in the second Perth Test, the West Indies bunkered down with Samuel at the helm and only the weather shaping as their potential ally.

Rain intervened three times today and it was just minutes after returning to the wicket from the third shower delay that Jacobs, his concentration broken, lost his vital wicket.

Nixon McLean hoisted Andy Bichel for six but the Queenslander got his revenge when he yorked him for 17 leaving the tourists groping at 144 for seven and Mervyn Dillon was bowled first ball by Jason Gillespie nearing stumps for 150 for eight.

Colin Stuart was bowled for one giving Bichel five wickets for the innings for the first time in a Test. He claimed 5-60 off 13.3 overs.

After Steve Waugh completed his 23rd Test hundred to be unbeaten on 121 in Australia’s first innings, the West Indies unravelled as Waugh’s team went for the jugular in their attempt to whitewash the series 5-0 with the final Sydney Test to play in the New Year.

Australia had made it look so easy as the batting tail wagged furiously with the last five wickets adding 215 runs after the home side had been labouring at 149 for five yesterday.

Waugh, who batted for 362 minutes and faced 237 balls, put on 81 runs with Gillespie (19) and 41 with buccaneering Colin Miller to make a mockery of the tourists’ ragged bowling as Australia profited from sloppy bowling and fielding.

Miller was dropped twice in the outfield by Courtney Walsh and Samuels on his way to a pugnacious 29 off 35 balls with two fours and a hooked six.

McMillan, Astle slam centuries

WELLINTON, Dec 27 (AP) — Craig McMillan and Nathan Astle notched centuries as New Zealand added 285 runs today for the loss of two wickets to finish the second day at 475 for six in the one-off cricket Test against Zimbabwe.

New Zealand resumed today at 190 for four, with Astle on 56 and McMillan on 20 not out.

The pair combined when New Zealand was 145 for four following the run out of Mark Richardson for 75.

McMillan plundered the Zimbabwean attack in the first two sessions, dominating a New Zealand-record 222-run partnership for the fifth wicket with Astle until he was bowled by Brian Murphy for 142.

Astle continued with Adam Parore, taking the total from 367 for five to 426 before he was caught off Bryan Strang for 141.

Parore remained unbeaten on 44 and Brooke Walker on 21 when stumps were drawn three overs early because of inadequate light.

Strang has 2-110 off 44 overs with Heath Streak and Murphy taking a wicket apiece.

New Zealand had been in trouble early yesterday, slumping to 22 for two on the opening day with opener Matt Horne and No. 3 Mathew Sinclair both dismissed cheaply.

Richardson and skipper Stephen Fleming (22) took the total to 67 before a running mixup resulted in the dismissal of Fleming.

Jacobs equals world record

MELBOURNE, Dec 27 (Reuters) — West Indies wicketkeeper Ridley Jacobs equalled the world record for most dismissals in a Test innings when he took seven catches against Australia in the fourth Test today.

“I had no idea I’d equalled the record,’’ Jacobs told reporters.

“I just go out there to give 100 per cent and whatever comes my way I appreciate. But i certainly didn’t go out there to get five, six or seven catches.

“I’m in good company now.’’

Jacobs (33) shares the record with England’s Bob Taylor in 1979-80 against India in Bombay, New Zealand’s Ian Smith in 1990-91 Test against Sri Lanka in Hamilton and Pakistan’s Wasim Bari in 1978-79 against New Zealand in Auckland. They also took seven catches in a Test innings.

Australia were all out for 364 at lunch on the second day and the West Indies were dismissed at close of play for 165, avoiding the follow-on by one run.

Jacobs (42) and Marlon Samuels (60 not out) were the only batsmen to score more than 20 for the West Indies in another disappointing display from the top order.

Kirsten (180) puts SA on top

DURBAN, Dec 27 (Reuters) — Gary Kirsten scored a masterful 180 to keep South Africa on top on the second day of the first Test against Sri Lanka on Friday.

South Africa were 410 for eight at tea, when Nicky Boje was 31 not out after captain Shaun Pollock was dismissed for two with what became the last ball of the second session.

Opener Kirsten was out 15 minutes before the interval, failing to avoid a short-pitched delivery from fast bowler Dilhara Fernando and edging it to wicketkeeper Romesh Kaluwitharana.

He was at the crease for nine-and-a-half hours, faced 461 deliveries and hit 20 fours.

South Africa, 230 for three overnight, lost their fourth wicket 15 minutes into the day’s play when off-spinner Muttiah Muralitharan had Neil Mckenzie caught at short leg by Tillekaratne Dilshan for nine.

Muralitharan took his third wicket of the innings eight overs later when Mark Boucher edged a delivery onto his pad and was caught at slip by Russel Arnold for 17.

Muralitharan obtained sharp turn and significant drift through the air, but the South Africans continued to attack his bowling and were rewarded with 101 runs in the morning session, which ended with the total on 331 for five.

Warne unhappy to be spectator

MELBOURNE, Dec 27 (Reuters) — Australia’s great wicket-taker Shane Warne was an unhappy spectator at the fourth Test in Melbourne today, declaring he did not enjoy sitting out the highlight match of the summer.

Warne, 31, is resigned to missing the five-match series because of a broken finger he suffered in an interstate match in Melbourne in October.

“Seeing the crowd today I hope this is the last Boxing Day Test I miss for a few years,” Warne said.

The first day of the fourth Test against the West Indies drew a crowd of more than 73,000 at Melbourne Cricket Ground today as Australia battled their way to 256 for seven off 76 overs late in the first day’s play.

Before play started, Australian Cricket Board (ACB) chairman Denis Rogers presented Warne with the ball used in the Auckland Test against New Zealand in March when he moved past Dennis Lillee’s record of 355 wickets.

Warne, who this year lost the Australian vice-captaincy over a telephone sex affair with an English nurse, has often been in the headlines off the field, including accepting money from a bookmaker to give pitch and weather information.

He said he had taken heart from the many letters of support from fans.

“This is a huge honour and I’m very grateful to receive it,” Warne said. “I’d like to thank the ACB for making the presentation as well as all the team-mates I’ve played with.”

“Without them I couldn’t have achieved the record.

“The public support has been sensational for a long period of time. The letters I have received have really helped to keep me going.”

Rogers also presented Warne, who has taken 366 wickets, with a framed photograph of Warne celebrating with the team after he took his 356th wicket.

Warne bowled with the Australian team in the nets before the fourth Test and is expected to press for selection for the tour of India in February.

Pak may have separate one-day, Test squads

ISLAMABAD, Dec 27 (PTI) — Taking a leaf from Australia’s successful strategy of grooming players, Pakistan Cricket Board has confirmed it was giving serious thought to the plan of raising separate Test and one-day squads for the coming tours.

PCB’s Selection Committee chairman Wasim Bari said the idea was to form separate squads as had been done by Australia, England and South Africa with success.

“We’ve players to do this experiment, which is important considering that we’ve an equal number of Test and one-day commitments leading up to the next World Cup in South Africa,” bari was quoted as saying by “The News” today.

The decision apparently follows the recent 1-0 drubbing of Pakistan at home at the hands of England which sparked stinging criticism of the captain, the team and the cricket set-up in the country. This was Pakistan’s fourth home series loss in two years.

It is believed the Chief Selector obtained the approval for the idea at the recent Advisory Council meeting of the Board at Lahore, attended also by skipper Moin Khan and coach Javed Miandad, who extended support to it.

Bari said the step would benefit the players as they could adjust mentally and physically to one particular style of game. “Australia has carried out the experiment successfully. Michael Bevan and Michael Slater are two very good examples of one-day and Test players.”

Clarifying that separate teams did not imply two totally different playing elevens, Bari said: “the core of both teams comprises five-six players who are good enough for both forms of games. But you groom a few players, keeping in mind your particular needs at both levels to form a balanced and strong outfit.”

There is a general opinion among followers of the game here that players like Imran Nazir, Azhar Mahmood and Shahid Afridi are more suited to the limited overs version of the game while Muhammad Wasim and Wajahtullah Wasti are better bets for Tests.

Jones Female Athlete of Year

NEW YORK, Dec 27 (AP) — Marion Jones gambled - then won and lost. Boldly predicting she could become the first track and field athlete to win five gold medals at a single Olympics, Jones’ drive for five left her with three golds and two bronzes.

The five medals represented a first for a female track and field athlete at one games, and for that accomplishment Jones was today chosen as The Associated Press’ Female Athlete of the Year.

In balloting by sportswriters and broadcasters, Jones received 27 first-place votes and 111 points, beating tennis star Venus Williams, runner-up with 16 1/2 firsts and 104 1/2 points. Golfer Karrie Webb was a distant third with 30 points. Points were awarded on a 3-2-1 basis.

Last year’s winner, the US soccer team, didn’t receive any votes this time.

Jones was the 10th female track and field athlete to win the honor since the award was inaugurated in 1931, and the first since the late Florence Griffith Joyner in 1988.

Jones’ golds came in the 100 and 200 metres and the 1,600 relay, the bronzes in the long jump and 400 relay.

Those bronzes could have been golds, Jones said.

“That gold medal was there for the taking in the long jump,” she said. “And in the (400) relay, we had some injuries (Gail Devers and Inger Miller). We didn’t have best horses.

“I guess everybody wants to win the lottery. You just don’t want to win the $ 2 ticket. I wanted to win them all, and I still think it’s possible. But I didn’t, so I’m not going to dwell on that.

“I didn’t get everything I wanted, but I didn’t give in. I can live with that.”

Her prediction, made two years before the Sydney games, earned Jones a lot of publicity, something she will avoid for the 2004 Olympics.

“I’ve vowed not to make a prediction such as the five golds, especially not four years prior to the next games,” said the 24-year-old Jones. “But whatever i choose to do, I’ll try and make it as extraordinary as possible.”

Jones’ gold-medal performances in Sydney were extraordinary, considering she was mentally distracted by the International Amateur Athletic Federation’s confirmation that her husband, C.J. Hunter, the 1999 world shot put champion, had tested positive for the steroid nandrolone four times after the US Olympic trials. The disclosure came after Jones’ first event, the 100 metres, meaning she had to compete in four events with that burden.

“It was very unfortunate timing,” she said.

Jones’ timing on the track was impeccable.

She won the 100 metres at 10.75 seconds, and her victory margin of 0.37 seconds was the second largest in Olympic history, man or woman. She won the 200 metres at 21.84, and her victory margin of 0.43 seconds was the second largest behind Wilma Rudolph’s in 1960. Her 100 metres and 200 metres times were the fastest in the world this year.

Jones helped the 1,600 relay team to victory at 3:22.62 with a powerful third leg of 49.4 seconds, the same as Australia's Cathy Freeman, the 400 metres gold medallist. No one else came close to running that fast.

Even more remarkable for Jones, she ran only one other individual 400 metres race during the year and had not run on a 1,600 relay since she was a sophomore at North Carolina. The 400 metres is a distance she dislikes.

“I don’t like how I feel after it because I like to be in control of my body, and in that last stretch, you have no control of your body,” she said.

Overall, the durable Jones competed 12 times in nine days at the games - four rounds of the 100 metres, four rounds of the 200 metres, a long jump qualifying round and the final, the anchor leg of the 400 metres relay final and the 1,600 metres relay final.

During the year, she also had the six fastest times and eight of the best nine in the 100 metres ; the two fastest in the world in the 200 metres; the best long jump by an American and fourth-best in the world , 23 ft, one-half inch; the fastest individual 400 metres by an American and fifth-fastest in the world, 49.59; ran on the world’s fastest 1,600-metres relay team; and anchored a US team to a world record of 1:27.46 in the 800 metres relay.

Williams also starred at the Olympics. She won the women’ singles title and teamed with sister Serena to win the doubles championship. Venus also had a 35-match winning streak during the year that included Wimbledon and the US Open.

To cap her year, she signed a five-year contract for a reported $ 40 million with Reebok, the richest endorsement deal for female athlete.

Bangladesh XI lose
From Our Sports Reporter

NABHA, Dec 27 — In the first major upset of the tournament, Police Range, Jagraon, blanked a clueless Bangladesh XI 3-0 to enter the next round in the 25th All India Liberals Hockey Tournament being at the Ripudaman College grounds here today.

The Bangladesh players never found their bearings. The visitors were stunned by a deflection from centre forward Harjinder Singh and unduly went on the defensive. The Jagraon cops plan was simple — to choke the visitors attack and strike, possibly through penalty corners. In the event the ploy did not work in the first half when Bangladesh played freely, calling the shots but failed to capitalise on a couple of chances. Right half Kamaljit Singh made the scoreline read 2-0 when his scoop over the prostrate custodian found the netting. For the visitors this goal proved to be a vital blow to their total aspirations. Substitute Ranjit Singh completed the rituals when he sent the ball through the goalkeepers legs to complete the well deserved 3-0 margin.

Meanwhile in other matches CISF, New Delhi trounced a hapless RCF, Kapurthala, 5-0, SRC, Ramgarh, scraped past a fighting ITBP, Jalandhar 2-1 and Army Eleven beat Corps of Signals taking the tie-breaker route 6-5.
