DAV SSS-8 lift Challenger trophy

CHANDIGARH, Dec 31—DAV Senior Secondary School, Sector 8, outscored hosts St John’s High School, Sector 26, to lift the under-16 title of the Ist St John’s Challenger Trophy played here. Earlier St John’s team had won the titles in under-12 and under-14 sections and only today they lost to DAVSSS-8.

DAV boys elected to bat first and right from the beginning their batsmen were in command of the game. They scored 184 runs for the loss of four wickets in the stipulated 30 overs. The highest scorer was Siddharth Sharma who made 56 unbeaten runs.

In reply, St John’s-26 could score only 138 runs for the loss of nine wickets in 30 overs. Rajnish claimed three wickets for 15 runs.

Earlier yesterday, St John’s- 26 outplayed YPS, SAS Nagar, by eight wickets in the under-14 section.

Brief scores: DAV SSS-8: 184 for four in 30 overs (Siddharth Sharma 56 n.o., Deepak Saini 34, Gurkirat Singh 21, Naresh 17, Arjun Talwar 2 for 50).

St John’s-26: 138 runs for nine in 30 overs (Harneet Singh Arora 34, Arjun Behl 26, Tejwinder S. Gill 14, Rajat Bhalla 12, Rajnish 3 for 15, Amanjit Singh 2 for 30).

Sunny bags snooker title

CHANDIGARH, Dec 31 — Sunny Bhalla bagged the open snooker title by winning his last league mach against Manan Nagpal in the Saurav Khattar Memorial Haryana State Billiards and Snooker Championship played here in the Billiards Hall, YMCA, Sector 11. Sunny built up an early lead in the first frame and maintained it till the end and won 54-34. In the following frame, it was neck and neck fight till the last black ball which Manan managed to pot after Sunny, then missed a crucial pot at 44-35. In the next two frames, Sunny kept up the pressure all through and played cautiously and won, 54-40 and 48-38. Though Anil Sharma won his last league encounter against Deepak Goel, 3-1, frames but was placed third. The open junior snooker final between Aman Bhasin and Suvir Sethi along with open billiards final between Deepak Goel and Lalit Ailawadi will be played tomorrow at 1.30 pm. The prize distribution function will also be held tomorrow.

Powerlifters return
City powerlifters have returned home after winning 25 medals, including 11 gold, six silver and eight bronze medals in the men team championship of the Junior National meet held at Ranchi, Jharkhand, on December 27.

The medal winners are: 75-kg class — Paramjit; 82.5-kg class — Hussan Lal (captain of the team); 90-kg class — Paramjit Singh; 100-kg class — Hari Chand; in 110-kg class — Devinder Singh and 56-kg class — Iqbal Singh.

Football trials
The Chandigarh Football Association will hold selection trials to select 25 probables for the forthcoming Junior National Football Championship at football stadium, Sector 17, on January 3 at 3 p.m. According to Mr Ravinder Talwar, president of the CFA, the players born on or after January 1, 1981 will be eligible for the trials. The probables selected will have training under the supervision of Mr Dinesh Sharma, SAI football coach.
