Inter-state sports
meet CHANDIGARH, Dec 18 — An inter-state sports meet is being organised by the Chandigarh Police in the last week of February 2001. For the event, authorities in Punjab, Haryana and Himachal Pradesh are being contacted. At a meeting with Inspector-General of Chandigarh Police B.S. Bassi, the possibility of holding kabaddi matches in the first fortnight of January was also considered. According to sources in the Police Department, the officials decided to allow the team members to practice for at least four hours, thrice a week. Steps would be taken to purchase good quality mats for wrestling practice. A Deputy Superintendent of Police was even asked to review the availability of sports equipment. He was further told to explore the feasibility of providing diet money to the team members. The officials were also asked to calculate the ammunition required by the shooting team for practice. |
MC panel shifts proposed
mandi site from Sec 38 CHANDIGARH, Dec 18 — The apni mandi committee of the MC at its last meeting held today did not have much on its agenda but used it as an opportunity to review the work done during the year. The committee, however, today gave its approval for changing the site of the Sector 38 apni mandi to some area located near 38 B and C instead of Sector 38-A. It may be recalled that the committee had earlier recommended two apni mandis for the benefit of the residents in Sector 38 and the Modern Housing Complex, Mani Majra. But following certain objections by the Residents Welfare Association to the setting up of the same in Sector 38-A, the members said that the same be set up in one of the parks near Sector B and C. The association had pointed out that apni mandi here would only create filth in the area and the same is not required as there is already one in Sector 37. Giving this information, chairman of the committee, Mr Kanhya Lal said that the recommendations cannot be shelved on the basis of opposition from a single quarter. However, the same can be altered. On the issue of day market, the members suggested that a detailed proposal for setting up the same in the city should be prepared and submitted before the members during the next apni mandi committee. The issue is vital in view of the recent agitation of the rehri-phari vendors, who have been demanding a single site for the day market. But the MC is
contemplating to give them three different sites for two days each. However, the proposal is likely to be reviewed in near future. |
