Jacob wants bylaws for villages
Chandigarh, Nov 21 — The UT Administrator, Lieut-Gen J.F.R. Jacob (retd), has suggested that there should be building bylaws for villages in the Union Territory. He asked the Municipal Commissioner, Mr M.P. Singh, to frame these bylaws soon. The Administrator suggested this during his visit to Sector 41 near Badheri village.

45 held under special drive
CHANDIGARH, Nov 21 — In the ongoing drive against "anti-social elements", the Chandigarh Police has rounded up 45 persons from the southern parts of the city. The thrust of the drive, carried out under the supervision of the Deputy Superintendent of Police (South), Mr S.C. Sagar, was reportedly against people indulging in brawls after gulping drinks.

Internet has hit postal delivery system
Chandigarh, Nov 21 — The spread of Internet has made the world smaller by bringing the people nearer to one another. But for the Department of Posts, the Internet coupled with private courier services has made its clientele go far away.

Pedestrian killed
CHANDIGARH, Nov 21 — An unknown pedestrian was killed while two cyclists were injured in separate accidents in different parts of the city during the past 24 hours. The pedestrian, aged about 15, was admitted to the Sector 32 Government Medical College and Hospital with serious injuries on November 19 after being hit by a scooter at about 12.50 p.m. According to sources in the police department, the pedestrian later succumbed to his injuries.

Hedges removed
CHANDIGARH, Nov 21 — The Enforcement Wing of the Municipal Corporation of Chandigarh (MCC) today removed hedges outside a row of houses in Sector 28-B.

Jagir Kaur summoned in defamation case
CHANDIGARH, Nov 21 — The President of the SGPC, Bibi Jagir Kaur has been summoned to appear before the court on January 22, by the UT Judicial Magistrate (Ist Class), Mr Naval Kumar in an alleged case of criminal conspiracy and defamation. Another co-accused in the case, Jaspal Singh Dhillon, has also been summoned for January 22.

Besides, they also keep in touch with the job placement consultants who claim to hold the key to ‘a bright future’ for them. HE Municipal Corporation of Chandigarh has decided to privatise the task of replacing defective water meters and charge the consumer for it. It is difficult to imagine how this decision can be called “consumer friendly”, as the corporation has claimed. In fact it is a blow to the consumer.

SAS NAGAR, Nov 21 — A senior citizen of Phase II here has been running from pillar to post to get his LPG cylinder back from an Assistant Sub Inspector posted at the Phase I police station. In the past seven months, Mr Jagan Nath has approached many senior police officials in this regard, but no one has helped him so far.

Jewellers shun hallmarking 
CHANDIGARH, Nov 21 — The next time you walk into a jewellery shop, check the quality of the gold that you purchase. The possibility of getting duped while purchasing gold is increasing with every day. The 22 carat variety of gold no more exists and according to reports a lot of adulteration is done at the cost of the buyer. One way out for the buyer is to ask for a “hallmarked” (a licence which stamps the purity of gold) product, but the jewellers, at least most of them express ignorance about it. In Chandigarh, only one jeweller in Sector 22 stocks hallmarked gold.

‘Special group on corrosion problem’
CHANDIGARH, Nov 21 — A group of experts will be constituted to look into the problem of corrosion in aero-engines and work out techniques to extend the life span of the engines and related accessories.

CITU observes strike
CHANDIGARH, Nov 21 — Members of the Central Industrial Trade Union (CITU) today observed a strike and demonstrated against the Chandigarh Administration, in front of The Tribune office. They demanded that the minimum salary for the Industrial workers must be fixed at Rs 3,500 and facilities like attendance card, ESI and bonus be provided to them.

Demand for train to Kerala
CHANDIGARH, Nov 21 — A delegation of the local unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) met the Union Minister of State for Railways, Mr O. Rajagopal, and urged him to look into the demand of having a direct train connection from Chandigarh to Thiruvananthapuram.

Man booked in cheating case
CHANDIGARH, Nov 21 — On the complaint of an SAS Nagar resident, Balwinder Kaur, against a Sector 18 booth owner, Des Raj Chawla, alleging cheating during the sale of a shop, the Chandigarh police has registered a case under Section 420 of the IPC.

Two cops suspended
PANCHKULA, Nov 21—The police has registered a case under Section 160 of the IPC against two Haryana Police constables, Satish Kumar and Sukhbir Singh, who were involved in a drunken brawl with a priest, Narinder, here today. All three have been apprehended and put behind bars following the submission of a medical report.

Pirated cassettes seized
SAS NAGAR, Nov 21 — The police today raided at least three shops in the town and recovered a large quantity of pirated audio cassettes. The owners of the three shops have been booked under the Copyright Act, 1957.

Board to computerise exam process
SAS NAGAR, Nov 21 — The Punjab School Education Board has decided to computerise its entire examination process of the matriculation and senior secondary examinations from the current academic session. Under the move, right from the processing of the examination forms to the preparation of the results, the entire job would be done on computers.

Order to withhold HSSC test result
CHANDIGARH, Nov 21 — A Division Bench of the Punjab and Haryana High Court comprising Mr Justice Amarbir Singh Gill and Mr Justice V.S. Aggarwal today stayed the declaration of result of the proposed test being held by the Haryana Staff selection Commission for the selection of math masters and mistresses in Haryana.

3 acquitted in separate cases
CHANDIGARH, Nov 21 — Ajad Singh, a city resident, was today acquitted by the UT Judicial Magistrate (First Class) in a rash driving case. It was alleged that the accused, Ajad Singh, who was driving a Maruti car, had hit Brij Bahadur in April, 1999, and caused him injuries. The case against the accused had been registered under Sections 289 and 337 of the Indian Penal Code on April 21, 1999. The accused was acquitted due to lack of evidence.

Majestic Himalayan moments captured in lens
CHANDIGARH, Nov 21 — The genesis of the photo exhibition on the Himalayas which opened at the Panjab University Fine Arts Museum today is quite strange, but there is something very special about its creation. The Lucknow-based lensmen Anil Risal and Threesh Kapoor share an affectionate smile as they disclose how the 50 prints on the majesty of the Himalayan Range came alive.

‘Our art does not reflect modernity’
CHANDIGARH, Nov 21 — He has a very illustrious career, at least in his role as an art critic. Santo Datta, the scholar in art, who has to his credit long stints as an art critic with various national dailies, is in the city for two days to deliver lectures on specific issues at the Government College of Art, Sector 10. The lectures are being organised by the college as part of the ongoing celebrations of the golden jubilee year of the college.

‘Bring down neonatal deaths’
CHANDIGARH, Nov 21 — The risk of a newborn baby dying in India is roughly 10 to 15 times more than any developed country. In India, every year as many as 12 lakh newborn babies die within the first month of their birth. Out of these, while one third die due to infection, the other main causes of the newborn deaths are asphyxia , low birth weight and premature deliveries.

CHANDIGARH, Nov 21 — As part of the martyrdom fortnight of Lala Lajpat Rai, Jan Shakti, a social organisation, organised an open discussion on ‘‘India still fighting for its freedom against disease’’ here yesterday. Brig ML Kataria (retd) lamented that even after 53 years of Independence, the rural and slum areas, which constituted 80 per cent of the population spent only about 20 per cent of the total expenditure of government medical expenditure.

PU enter semis of soccer meet
CHANDIGARH, Nov 21 — Panjab University Chandigarh, Punjabi University Patiala, Guru Nanak Dev University Amritsar and Maharshi Dayanand University, Rohtak, have made it to the semi-finals of the North Zone Inter-University Football (men’s) Tournament. The tournament is being played on the PU grounds here.

CHANDIGARH, Nov 21 — Gutta Jwala, the 17-year-old Hyderabad based badminton player, who stormed the Indian Uber cup team past February, was here in the city for taking part in the ongoing National Badminton Championships.

16 firms default on EPF, get notices
CHANDIGARH, Nov 21 — The Regional Provident Fund Commissioner has issued show-cause notices to as many as 16 establishments of Chandigarh and Punjab which are defaulting on depositing of Employees Provident Fund.

Fruitless auction for HUDA
PANCHKULA, Nov 21 — The Haryana Urban Development Authority received only Rs 7,88,000 in an auction of commercial sites here. Only a few bidders were there for the auction. HUDA could sell only eight of the 65 commercial sites by the end of the day.

30 shopkeepers challaned
CHANDIGARH, Nov 21 — The UT Enforcement Wing challaned 30 shopkeepers during a drive in Sectors 18 and 22 yesterday to clear the pavements and corridors from encroachers. While 15 shopkeepers were issued challans in Sector 18 radio market for sub-letting the verandahs in front of their shops to mechanics to carry out their repair work, those in Sector 22 were challaned for encroaching upon public corridors by displaying their ware.
