CBI interrogates Bibi
 Kamaljit to challenge grant of bail
 NEW DELHI, Nov 17 — Dressed in her traditional attire and flanked by her supporters, the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee chief, Bibi Jagir Kaur, appeared before the Central Bureau of Investigation 10 minutes before the deadline set by the Punjab and Haryana High Court expired.

NEW DELHI, Nov 17 — The Punjab Congress today demanded that the CBI should look into the role of Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal in the disposal of Harpreet’s body under suspicious circumstances.

Crucial SAD meeting on Nov 21
To decide Jagir Kaur’s fate
CHANDIGARH, Nov 17 — The much-awaited important meeting of the Political Affairs Committee (PAC) of the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) will be held here on November 21 at 4 p.m. at the residence of the Chief Minister, Mr Parkash Singh Badal, to decide the fate of the SGPC President, Bibi Jagir Kaur.

CBI charge-sheets Rathore in
Ruchika molestation case
 CHANDIGARH, Nov 17 — After a long wait, the CBI today filed a charge sheet against the Haryana Director-General of Police, Mr S.P.S. Rathore, in the Ruchika molestation case. The charge sheet was filed in the court of the Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate, Mr A.K. Tyagi, the designated Special Court at Ambala for CBI cases in Haryana.

 WASHINGTON, Nov 17 — A Florida judge today handed a major legal victory to Republican presidential candidate George W. Bush, ruling that state officials did not need to include continuing recounts in the state’s final tally. The ruling by Circuit Judge Terry Lewis upheld Republican Secretary of State Katherine Harris’ decision to certify Mr Bush’s 300-vote lead over Vice-President Al Gore, pending final counts of overseas absentee ballots due by tomorrow.

Some Veerappan demands ‘met’
CHENNAI, Nov 17 — Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi disclosed for the first time on Friday that forest brigand Veerappan had released Kannada actor Rajkumar on the assurances given by Tamil National Movement leader P. Nedumaran that some of his demands would be met. He, however, did not give any specific details.

Foreign equity in print media ruled out
NEW DELHI, Nov 17 — Barely a month after she sought a national debate, Information and Broadcasting Minister Sushma Swaraj today brought the curtain down on allowing foreign equity in the print media by declaring that the government had categorically decided against such a move.

ULFA kills 7 non-Assamese
GUWAHATI, Nov 17 — In yet another attack on non-Assamese communities, the banned ULFA militants shot dead seven persons, including a woman and her three children, and injured three others in upper Assam’s Sibsagar district yesterday, the police said here today.

Modern weapons for VDCs, SPOs
JAMMU, Nov 17 — Members of the village defence committees (VDCs) and Special Police Officers (SPOs), engaged in anti-insurgency operations in Doda, Rajouri and Udhampur districts, would be provided sophisticated weapons shortly. This was disclosed by the Director-General of Police (DGP), Mr Gurbachan Jagat, while addressing VDC members at Gandoh in Doda district and Chasana in the Mahore area of Udhampur district during the past two days.
