Vikramaditya, Nitika bag TT titles

LUDHIANA, Sept 10 — In a ding-dong battle which lasted for 40 minutes, Punjab’s number two paddler Vikramaditya of the Punjab State Electricity Board, Patiala prevailed over Vikas Mahajan also of the PSEB in four sets to win men’s singles title in the 12th Prithipal Singh Memorial Open Table Tennis Tournament which concluded at Punjab Agricultural University here today.

In the women's section, Nitika of Jalandhar scraped past her town mate Anu in three sets to bag the title. The current Punjab champion, Disney Ryait, of the local Sacred Heart Convent School outplayed Sumit of Jalandhar to emerge as champion in the junior boys’ category.

The men’s final began on a rousing note with both Vikramaditya and Vikas Mahajan matching each other move for move. The score was tied 5-all and then 17-all in the first set but from this point Vikramaditya sewed up the game 21-18.

In the second set ,Vikas changed his tactics and gave little chance to his opponent to settle down. However, Vikram managed to catch him at 14-all. After this Vikram committed mistakes on which Vikas capitalised and wrapped up the game 21-17.

In the third set, Vikram after surviving some anxious moments lead 11-7 and eventually won it 21-17. Vikram won the decider 21-18.

In the women’s final, Nitika won the first game 21-16 but lost the second 19-21. Adopting aggressive play, she proved her supremacy over her rival Anu and won the verdict 21-18 to become the champion.

In the junior boys’ category Disney Ryait defeated Sumit 21-17,21-19 and 21-16 to retain the title.

Mr Sudhir Sehgal, an advocate of the city, gave away prizes. Tilak Raj of the Haryana State Electricity Board, Panchkula, who represented Haryana, Punjab and Chandigarh in the senior nationals was also felicitated. Ms Jaspreet Kaur daughter of Olympian Prithipal Singh, presented him this year’s Prithipal Singh Memorial Award.

All-round show by Sandeep

LUDHIANA, Sept 10 — A fine all-round display by Sandeep Dhand (34 off 27 balls and 2 wickets for 14 runs) and an equally useful batting by Saurabh Jain (50) enabled Sacred Heart Convent School, Sarabha Nagar, to beat Sacred Heart Convent School, Bhai Randhir Singh Nagar, by 78 runs in the final of the Millennium-2000 Inter-Convent School Cricket Tournament here yesterday.

Put into bat first, Sacred Heart Convent School, Sarabha Nagar, amassed 144 runs for the loss of seven wickets in 25 overs. Saurabh Jain hit 50 off 66 balls, while Sandeep Dhand smashed 34 of just 27 deliveries and Gaurav Dhingra scored 26 runs. For Sacred Heart Convent School, Bhai Randhir Singh Nagar, Ishwarjot Singh, Abhay Kumar, Rohit, Nippun and Karanbir scalped one victim each.

Sacred Heart Convent School, Bhai Randhir Singh Nagar, began their chase on a dismal note and could muster only 66 losing eight wickets after 22 overs when they surrendered the match. Their batsman Pranaybeer Singh stood tall with 34 runs off 45 balls.
