‘India Day’ in New York
Vajpayee shares platform with VHP

NEW YORK, Sept 10 — It was unofficially “India Day” for all practical purposes in New York, the commercial capital of the new world, yesterday.
First, it was the Prime Minister’s date with Bharatiya Vidya Bhawan and its “Vande Mataram” show. There was a touch of colour, with dance numbers by children followed by A.R. Rahman’s audio-visual called “Vande Mataram”.

Calls in USA to lift sanctions

WASHINGTON, Sept 10 — Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee’s statement before Asia Society suggesting that continued sanctions against India on the nuclear issue were incompatible with the Indo-US agreement that New Delhi was a “natural ally” of Washington has found an echo in Congress.

Defence Minister George FernandesNEW DELHI, Sept 10 — The Centre today said it would consider all options, including imposition of President’s rule in West Bengal, where the situation was worse than in Bihar as the whole structure of the Constitution was under attack”. Defence Minister George Fernandes, who submitted his report on the situation in West Bengal to Union Home Minister L.K. Advani today said, the entire constitutional structure in the state was “under danger” and there was a serious threat to the life of Union Railway Minister Mamta Bannerjee.

10 dead in Kharar accident
KHARAR, Sept 10 — In a major road mishap, at least 10 persons died and another 40 persons were injured in a collision among four vehicles, including two buses, on the Kharar-Morinda highway near Rurki Pukhta village near here late this evening. Of the 40 injured, around 25 persons, who were in a serious condition, were rushed to the PGI, Chandigarh and another nine were admitted to the Civil Hospital, here.

Former sarpanch dies in custody
HOSHIARPUR, Sept 10 — A former sarpanch of Gogon village, Chuhar Singh who was arrested near Arniala choe by Mahilpur police in a case of poppy husk smuggling died at the local Civil Hospital at 12.30 a.m. last night allegedly from injuries inflicted while in police custody.
