Pakistan outplay Sri Lanka

DHAKA, June 5 (PTI) — Yousuf Youhana continued his superb form, hitting up an unbeaten 90 to top a superb effort in the field that enabled Pakistan outplay Sri Lanka by seven wickets and gain a psychological advantage ahead of their summit clash in the Asia Cup Cricket Tournament here tonight.

Youhana, who hit up 80 and 100 not out in the previous two matches against Bangladesh and India respectively, came up with yet another fine effort in the inconsequential last league match to help his team reach 193 for 3 with 10 balls to spare after bundling out the defending champions for a paltry 192 in 49 overs at the Banganbandhu Stadium here.

The young right-hander, who has had a good tour of the West Indies in which he scored two hundreds, maintained his good run, hitting eight well timed fours and two huge sixes in his 130-ball knock as the Pakistani batsmen took it easy against a modest target.

That was set up by their superb bowling and equally admirable fielding which never let the Sri Lankans off the hook after they elected to bat. Five of the Lankan batsmen including the dependable Aravinda de Silva (2) fell to the brilliant Pakistani fielders as the islanders came up with a miserable display.

Their misery was further compounded by the Pakistani bowlers who maintained a tight line and length and wickets tumbled at regular intervals as the defending champions ended well short of a competitive total.

Chess crown for Anand

LEON, June 5 (PTI) — Indian Grandmaster Viswanathan Anand demolished GM Alexei Shirov of Spain 1.5-0.5 in the two-game final to win the Advance Chess Tournament.

Anand, who has been going through a lean patch and has had a disappointing run in the Linares, Hoogovens and Wijk Aan Zee tournaments, capitalised on a minor advantage to win the first game and then warded off desperate attempts by Shirov to draw the second and retain the title here yesterday.

The No 2 had won the title here last year by outplaying former world champion Anatoly Karpov of Russia 5-1.

Last night’s victory in the four-player event, in which players can consult computers, was also sweet revenge for Anand who had lost to Shirov in the Linares Super GM Tournament earlier this year.

In the first game both Anand and Shirov followed routine theory of French Winawer till the 10th move before Shirov deviated from the well-trodden path. Anand, playing with white, dismantled the queenside of Shirov by advancing his queen-rook pawn to a6 and exchanged his light square bishop to exert pressure.

Anand gained a miniscule advantage thanks to his centralised king after the players traded queens. Further trading of pieces later a minor piece endgame was reached where Anand retained the initiative.

As the pressure started to build, Shirov tried to create a fortress by moving his king-knight pawn.

What followed was a spectator’s delight as Anand sacrificed his knight for a pawn, but in the resulting position, Shirov was defenseless against the March of white’s king pawns and resigned after 39 moves.

Sportspersons get cash awards
From Our Sports Reporter

NEW DELHI, June 5 — Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa presented cash awards to 150 sportspersons and 18 coaches who won medals and accolades at various international meets at an impressive function at Vigyan Bhawan here today.

The awards, given under the scheme of “Special awards to winners in international sports events and their coaches” were introduced in 1986 primarily to compensate the medal winners of international sports events for the expenses incurred on diet, training, preparations and for the “deprivations suffered by them due to their devotion and service to sports”.

Sadly, over the years, the cash awards scheme has been mired in controversy. Since the function was not held last year, the ministry decided to combine it this time.

Yachting heroes Aashim Mongia and Lt Ramachandran Mahesh collected the highest cash awards of Rs 6,75,000 each followed by Jaspal Rana who received a cash prize of Rs 5,62,500 while another shooter, Ved Prakash Pilaniya, got the second highest cash prize among shooters, of Rs 5,12,500. Golden girl P.T. Usha reaped a rich harvest of Rs 2,75,000.

Chess has produced the maximum number of award winners (34), followed by athletics (28), weightlifting (21), wrestling (15), shooting (13), rowing (10), table tennis (8), golf and judo (six each), kayaking and canoeing (4), boxing (3), yachting (2) and coaches (18).

While distributing the awards, Mr Dhindsa lamented the absence of presidents and secretaries of various sports federations, and said this showed a lack of seriousness among the federation officials in promoting sports. The very fact that former Indian cricket captains Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi and Bishan Singh Bedi were present at the function, though it was only to honour medal winners of Olympic sports events, showed their real commitment to sports, though cricket is not an Olympic sport, the minister said.

Mr Dhindsa said the cash awards had been substantially increased this time in a bid to provide greater incentives to sportspersons. He said an equal amount also being awarded to the respective coaches.

The minister said the living conditions and facilities at various coaching camps would be upgraded, and selection of teams would be done purely on merit.

Kafelnikov rallies to win

PARIS, June 5 (AFP) — Sweden’s Magnus Norman was on the verge of sealing a quarterfinal spot when rain halted his fourth-round men’s singles match against Andrei Medvedev at the French Open today.

Third-seeded Norman, aiming for the first Grand Slam title of his career, led Medvedev, last year’s beaten finalist, 6-0 6-4 4-1 on a bleak, wet and cloudy afternoon.

The players left the court when Medvedev complained it was impossible to slide safely.

Medvedev, beaten by Andre Agassi in last year’s final, had made good-natured fun of Norman in a press conference earlier in the week but the Swede looked likely to have the last laugh.

The 24-year-old Norman, a semi-finalist at the Australian Open in January and winner of two tournaments already this year, was in good form until the rain made it impossible for play to continue.

Norman is the highest seed left in the tournament after the early departures of Andre Agassi and Pete Sampras. He has so far not lost a set, or even played a tiebreaker.

The Swede took just 20 minutes to win the first set after the start of play had been delayed by rain for over an hour. Medvedev was able to win just six points.

The Ukrainian had points for a 4-2 lead in the second set but Norman held on, broke for 5-4 and then served it out.

When Norman broke in the opening game of the third set it appeared there was no way back for Medvedev.

The winner of the Norman-Medvedev match will play either sixth-seeded Frenchman Cedric Pioline or 12th-seeded Russian Marat Safin, who were locked in combat on centre court.

Safin led 6-4 1-6 3-2 when that match was halted by the rain.

Two more men’s fourth-round matches were scheduled later today with ninth-seeded Australian Lleyton Hewitt playing Albert Costa of Spain and 15th-seeded Moroccan Younes El Aynaoui facing Franco Squillari of Argentina.

The other four men’s fourth-round matches were played yesterday.

Yevgeny Kafelnikov of Russia, the fourth seed and 1996 champion here, rallied to record his third five-set victory of the tournament - winning 5-7 6-3 5-7 7-6 (7/4) 8-6 against Spaniard Fernando Vicente to earn a mouth-watering meeting with another former champion - Gustavo Kuerten of Brazil.

Kuerten, the fifth seed who won here in 1997, stayed on track for a second crack at the title with a 6-3 6-4 7-6 (7/4) win over 11th-seeded Ecuadorian Nicolas Lapentti, with whom he once won the junior boys doubles title here.

Two Spaniards, Alex Corretja, the 10th seed, and Juan Carlos Ferrero, the 16th seed, also reached the last eight and will meet in the quarters.

Corretja, a finalist in 1998 and a perennial contender here, beat 18-year-old Swiss prodigy Roger Federer 7-5 7-6 (9/7) 6-2 after a hard-fought baseline battle while Ferrero outplayed power-serving Australian Mark Philippoussis 6-2 6-2 3-6 6-3.

Beleaguered Cronje faces trouble from team-mates

CAPE TOWN, June 5 (IANS) — Disgraced South African cricket skipper Hansie Cronje is heading for trouble from ex-team-mates as a commission of inquiry into alleged match-fixing prepares for public hearings starting here on Wednesday.

An increasing number of ex-colleagues are turning on Cronje, who is expected to tell the commission that “the Devil made me do it.” Cronje confessed to having been dishonest after first denying allegations of colluding with bookmakers in India.

Reliable sources indicate that some of the players will be telling the inquiry commission that Cronje gathered the team before a match in India last year and offered them 60,000 rands (about $10,000) each if they were willing to throw the series.

Some of them allegedly later discovered that Cronje would have pocketed more than $150,000 himself.

The team apparently rejected the offer after players Andrew Hudson and Derek Crookes angrily protested that such behaviour was not becoming of good Christians. India won the one-day series 3-2 and subsequent investigations by Delhi Police have led to Cronje facing charges there.

Some of the players are also saying that they will not hesitate to take legal action against Cronje if it comes to light that they had suffered financially because of his actions. Spinner Pat Symcox has gone on record that Cronje had been “skating on thin ice.”

The commission has summoned all players and officials who were involved in the Indian tour. The hearings would originally have involved invited participants, and the fact that legal summonses have been issued is seen as reflecting the seriousness with which the commission is addressing the issue.

Commission secretary John Bacon said that the order of testimony might only be decided by Tuesday and he could not give an indication of how long the hearings might take.

The commission has to file an interim report by the end of June. Bacon said that attempts would be made to accommodate the players who are in the team for the tour to Sri Lanka next month first so that they could rejoin the training sessions with as little inconvenience as possible.

The commission is also still waiting for Indian authorities to respond to a request for copies or transcriptions of the tapes in which Cronje allegedly talks to Indian bookie Sanjay Chawla.

JOHANNESBURG (PTI): Former South African cricket board chief Ray White has come to the defence of former skipper Hansie Cronje, who is embroiled in a match-fixing scandal, saying his involvement with bookies had come about because of alienation from the country’s cricket establishment when early this year he was put on trial as captain.

“It is difficult to recall a more stupid decision in the history of South African cricket and it almost certainly completed the alienation of Hansie Cronje from a system that was supposed to support him,” White wrote in an article published yesterday in Natal Witness newspaper, based in the city of Pietermaritzburg.

“As he felt the sand shift under his feel yet again, and in the knowledge that other cricketers in the world had made fortunes by co-operating with bookmakers without slightest danger of being caught, it is understandable and dreadfully sad that Cronje’s values broke down and he succumbed to temptation,” he said.

White, who was voted out early this year for opposing entry of greater number of blacks in the national team, alleged he was warned by John Blair, president of Free State Cricket Union, for which Cronje played before being banned in April, that Cronje was a “dangerously unstable personality.

White said Blair told him: “Cronje was susceptible, under pressure, to a degree of irrational behaviour that would not be compatible with the profile required of our national cricket captain.”

Despite this Cronje was made national captain in 1994, he said.

About Cronje’s future, White wrote: “His career is in ruins and he would be wise to expect no mercy from a system that let him down so often in the past.”

Meanwhile, the United Cricket Board of South Africa has banned use of cell phones in the dressing room in an attempt to assure the public that the players are “above board.”

The ban was announced by UCB Managing Director Dr Ali Bacher on Saturday ahead of the hearing of the King Commission of inquiry into match-fixing in cricket which starts in Cape Town on Wednesday.

The commission headed by retired judge Edwin King was appointed by the government following Hansie Cronje’s admission that he had accepted between $ 10,000 to $ 15,000 from a London-based Indian bookie.

Bacher he was confident the commission will help clean up cricket in the country. “I am certain that the commission will help clean up cricket,” the local media quoted Bacher as saying.

The commission has already sent out about 45 subpoenas to players — past and present — and officials to testify.

One of the former players, spin bowler Pat Symcox, has already indicated that Cronje had taken a number of “strange decisions” during tours to India and England.

Symcox would be one of the first to testify on Wednesday when the commission holds its first public sitting.

Matthaus still at the top

PARIS, June 5 (AFP) — Germany’s evergreen Lothar Matthaus at 39 is still a class player though after his Bayern Munich going away party in March one forgets he is set to be a key figure of their Euro 2000 bid.

Matthaus arrived in New York in early March to play for the New York/New Jersey Metrostars after having left Bayern Munich in style, helping them qualify for the quarter-finals of the Champions League with a 4-1 victory over eventual winners Real Madrid.

He may be looking for newer pastures and perhaps a good pay check towards the end of his career, but he’s certainly part of the plans of German coach Erich Ribbeck.

Matthaus, a veteran of five World Cup finals and a record 25 games, got emotional when he left the field on a standing ovation from the 60,000 fans packed into Munich’s Olympic stadium.

“I’m still emotionally touched by my farewell”, said the German who helped the club to six league titles, two German Cups and the 1996 UEFA Cup.

Matthaus captained Germany to their 1990 World Cup victory in Italy as a rugged, ball-winning midfielder and was voted FIFA world Player of the Year the same season.

He began his career with Borussia Monchengladbach, spending five successful seasons between 1984-88, before his first spell with Bayern Munich from 84-88.

A four-year spell with Italian Serie A side Inter Milan followed before he returned to Munich in 1992.

On February 23 this year, Matthaus broke the world record for international appearances with his 144th cap against Holland, beating Sedish keeper Thomas Ravelli.

Matthaus was also in danger of not going to the USA after criticizing the club after manager Charlie Stilliano and Serb coach Bora Milutinovic were both sacked -the two people who had been in contact with Matthaus over the transfer.

But that would have meant a breach of contract and FIFA spokesman Andreas Herren told German news agency SID at the time that if a player did not respect a contract signed in good faith a suspension would be imposed.

Matthaus tore his leg muscle in training in late May.

Shearer not short on self belief

LONDON, June 5 (AFP) — England captain Alan-Shearer will be determined to go out on a high note at Euro 2000 in Holland and Belgium before the curtain comes down on his glittering international career.

The 29-year-old Newcastle striker announced in February that he would retire from international football after this summer’s tournament.

Despite netting six goals in the qualifiers and being England’s ever-present throughout, Shearer’s status as his country’s best striker has been under threat.

He has not approached his best for England since suffering a cruciate ligament injury — despite finding form for his club.

Success for Shearer would bring a fitting end to his career. He has never lost his self-belief despite suggestions that he is no longer the player he once was.

“I don’t really care what other people say to be honest,” he said recently. “If you believe the praise, you might get carried away; if you believe the criticism, you might sink.

“So if you believe none of it and believe in your own ability, that will come through, I’ve always done that and that’s one of my strengths.

“I’ll let other people decide whether I’m a good player or not.”

But Newcastle coach Bobby Robson must also take some credit for inspiring Shearer to give a defiant answer to his band of critics.

An informal chat between the two the night before Robson’s first game in charge at Chelsea on September 11 put Shearer on the right track.

But it was eight days later their discussion started to bear fruit when England’s number nine scored five goals in an 8-0 demolition of Sheffield on Wednesday.

Their relationship has blossomed ever since and Robson has put much of his side’s relative success down to the example he has given his team-mates. “He’s been a great leader here, a great personality,” he said. “He’s done fantastically well for us.

“Of course we’ve talked about his game and we’ve done meaningful things in training to help him and motivate him, but he’s done it himself as well.

“We have a good rapport, for sure. He’s a Geordie (born in Newcastle) and so am I. We both come from the area and we have a feel for each other and a great respect for each other and it didn’t take long to bring him back to the player I knew he was.

“He’s been around quite a long time and he’s always been the number one choice of successive England managers. He’s number one to Kevin Keengam and he was to Glenn Hoddle and Terry Venbles as well.

Kluivert may blossom at Euro 2000

PARIS, June 5 (AFP) — Holland’s high-profile striker Patrick Kluivert, always in the limelight for good or bad, can, however, never be ignored when the chips are down in a major championship.

A regular in Barcelona’s star-studded line-up this season, he has delivered under the highest pressure possible at their Nou Camp stadium and his national coach Frank Rijkaard is expecting nothing less from his talented, yet controversial midfield at this summer’s Euro 2000.

His temper can boil over, as is the case with many top footballers as the fury is a by-product of the natural aggression which makes them stars.

However, he knows he cannot repeat the antics which earned a red card at the 1998 World Cup.

Kluivert was dismissed in a group match against Belgium for retaliation, by hitting Lorenzo Staelens, and served a two-match ban which was just the result their opponents would have wanted.

But he went on to become one of their key players and scored the equalizer in the 87th minute for 1-1 draw in the semi-final against Brazil, which they eventually lost on penalties.

Ironically, he had a great game in a friendly against Belgium in late March, scoring twice to come back from a 2-0 deficit to draw against their arch rivals and neighbours.

He also had a five-match ban slapped on him by the Spanish Football Federation in January after striking Rayo Vallecano player Jesus Diego Coto a month earlier.

The player was handed a four-match ban but also missed a fifth game because of a sanction that had been suspended following a previous brush with authority. The Dutch star also had a traumatic time after scoring the the winner in Ajax’s 1-0 European Cup win over AC Milan in 1995.

SA hockey team to miss Olympics

JOHANNESBURG, June 5 (Reuters) — South Africa’s National Olympic Committee (NOCSA) today finally closed the doors to the participation of the country’s men’s hockey side at the Sydney Olympics later this year.

The decision came after the International Olympic Committee’s executive board rejected an appeal by the South African Hockey Association (SAHA) at a meeting in Rio De Janeiro last month.

NOCSA announced in February that the team would not be going to Sydney on the grounds that they were unlikely to finish ninth or better in the tournament and that the squad did not include enough black players.
